   Networks

Copyright  2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc., A Wiley Company

Network problems are pervasive in our modern technological society, as witnessed by our reliance on physical networks that provide power, communication, and transportation. As well, a number of processes can be modeled using logical networks, as in the scheduling of interdependent tasks, the dating of archaeological artifacts, or the compilation of subroutines comprising a large computer program. Networks provide a common framework for posing and studying problems that often have wider applicability than their originating context.

The goal of this journal is to provide a central forum for the distribution of timely information about network problems, their design and mathematical analysis, as well as efficient algorithms for carrying out optimization on networks. The nonstandard modeling of diverse processes using networks and network concepts is also of interest. Consequently, the disciplines that are useful in studying networks are varied, including applied mathematics, operations research, computer science, discrete mathematics, and economics.

Networks publishes material on the modeling of problems using networks, the analysis of network problems, the design of computationally efficient network algorithms, and innovative case studies of successful network applications. Since the audience for this journal is then necessarily broad, articles that impact multiple application areas or that creatively use new or existing methodologies are especially appropriate. We seek to publish original, well-written research papers that make a substantive contribution to the knowledge base. In addition, tutorial and survey articles are welcomed. All manuscripts are carefully refereed.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission

Send all manuscripts for submission to Dr. B. L. Golden, P. O. Box 149, Simpsonville, MD 21150.

Correspondence concerning proofs, subscriptions, and other matters should be addressed to the Journals Dept., c/o John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 111 River Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030.

A covering letter must accompany each submission indicating the name, address, telephone and e-mail address, and FAX numbers of the author to whom all correspondence and proofs are to be addressed. An affiliation must be supplied for each author.

Submission of a manuscript to the Editor implies that the paper has not been published, that it is not being submitted for publication elsewhere, and that, if the work reported is officially sponsored, it has been released for publication.

Copyright. No article can be published unless accompanied by a signed publication agreement, which serves as a transfer of copyright from author to publisher. A publication agreement may be obtained from the editor or the publisher. A copy of the publication agreement appears in most issues of the journal. Only original papers will be accepted and copyright in published papers will be vested in the publisher. It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce material that has appeared in another publication. (In the case of a "work made for hire," the agreement must be signed by the employer.)

Five copies of the manuscript are required for each submission. All material should be typed double spaced on one side only on standard 21 x 28 cm paper with 2.5 cm margins. The paper should be divided into suitable sections and subsections, each with its own heading. A short abstract (200 words maximum) as well as 4-6 keywords are required. It should be complete and self-contained, giving the scope and emphasizing the main conclusions, results, or significance of the work described.

Equations and symbols should be typed wherever possible: all ambiguous symbols must be clearly defined in the margin (e.g., 1, l; k, kappa; X, chi).

Figures. Figures should be professionally prepared and submitted in a form suitable for reproduction (camera-ready copy). Computer-generated graphs are acceptable only if they have been printed with a good quality laser printer. The maximum final size for a figure in this journal is 12 x 19.5 cm; lettering is reduced to a 1.5 mm height.

All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requested to pay the cost of reproducing color figures in print. Authors are encouraged to submit color illustrations that highlight the text and convey essential scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Jennifer English at 201-748-6644; jenglish@wiley.com for further information. Color proofs will be sent to the contributor for approval prior to printing.

Literature references should be indicated in text by an arabic number in square brackets. All literature citations should be grouped together at the end of the manuscript in alphabetical order and numbered consecutively. For journal references, supply author, title, journal title, volume, year, and paper range; for book references, supply author, title, publisher, and city and year of publication; for unpublished material, give as much information as possible (e.g., for lectures or symposia list author, paper title, symposium title, sponsor, location, and date). Sample references follow:

Authors will receive proofs that must be corrected and returned to the publisher within 48 hours of receipt. No new material may be inserted in the text at the proofreading stage. Authors will be charged for excessive alterations.

Corresponding author will receive 25 reprints of their article without charge. Additional reprints can be ordered and purchased by filling out the form attached to the proof.

Correspondence. All other correspondence should be addressed to the Publisher, c/o John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 111 River Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030.

Disk Submission Instructions

Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy.
The hard copy must match the disk.

The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).

Guidelines for Electronic Submission

Text
Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintosh format.

Software and format. LaTeX is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with other forms of TeX are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.

File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.

Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.

Illustrations
All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.

Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.

Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.

Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.

File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).

Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, formats, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany all files.
