About the journal

Molecular Plant Pathology

Molecular Plant Pathology is published bi-monthly and welcomes submissions from all areas of molecular plant pathology including research on diseases caused by fungi, oomycetes, viruses, nematodes, bacteria, insects, parasitic plants and other organisms.

Molecular Plant Pathology is especially interested in manuscripts emphasizing molecular analyses of pathogens, determinants affecting host response to plant pathogens or the interaction of both. In addition to the principal content of full length and short research papers, Molecular Plant Pathology will also include

technical advances, along with major and micro reviews on areas of particular interest and importance. The journal is dedicated to minimizing the time between submission, review and publication and to providing a high quality forum for original research in molecular plant pathology.

Instructions to Authors

Online submission of manuscripts is available at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mpp. Instructions on how to prepare your manuscript for online submission are given on the site and below. Please ensure that you follow the journal's instructions carefully before you submit your manuscript.

Editorial Policy

Papers are assigned to one of the Senior Editors, who will choose members of the Editorial Board or additional ad hoc reviewers where appropriate. Authors may nominate a Senior Editor and up to three reviewers from the Editorial Board or elsewhere, providing title, name and email details. However, the Editors reserve the right not to use these. Related papers If the author has a related paper currently in press or is citing a paper not yet published, this must be included with the submission. A PDF of the paper should be submitted as supporting documents during file upload.

Availability of scientific material Submission to Molecular Plant Pathology is on the understanding that materials described will be made available upon request. If there are any restrictions on the sharing of material these must be stated in both the covering letter and Experimental Procedures. Any IP restrictions must also be made clear.

Authorship All authors must qualify for authorship and all those who qualify must be listed. Each author must have approved the final submitted manuscript.

Papers must be submitted exclusively to Molecular Plant Pathology and are accepted on the understanding that no substantial part has been, or will be, published elsewhere. Molecular Plant Pathology is a member of the Committee On Publication Ethics (COPE). For further information go to www.publicationethics.org.uk.

Submission of Manuscripts

The Molecular Plant Pathology online submission site can be found at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mpp.

Please note that manuscript submission must be done from the corresponding author centre within the ScholarOne Manuscripts website.

Authors should address their covering letter to the Editor-in Chief. The Editor-in Chief will then choose a Senior Editor closest to the field of interest to handle the review process. Alternatively, authors are permitted to nominate a Senior Editor, in which case the covering letter should be addressed to them. However, the Editor-in-Chief reserves the right not to use this Senior Editor.

Authors are requested to submit their manuscript text and figures as individual files. Text as Microsoft Word (.doc), Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Postscript (.ps). Figures should be uploaded individually as high resolution JPEG (.jpg), TIFF (.tif), or EPS (.eps) files. Figures uploaded in these file formats will be automatically converted to small jpegs for reviewing. Please do not leave large areas of blank space around your figures as this will reduce the final size of your figures in the PDF proof. For detailed information on uploading files, go to http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/illustration.asp. For ease of reviewing, figures and figure legends should appear together on the same page. Figure legends should also be present in the main text of the manuscript.

Please note: This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents (.docx) at this time. Please use Word's 'Save As' option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.

The complete manuscript will be automatically converted to PDF or HTML for reviewing. Please check both the PDF and HTML proofs carefully before final submission to ensure that they include everything they should and that all figures display correctly.

Supporting Information

Supporting information may be uploaded with the manuscript. There are two types of supporting information, that which is intended for online publication upon acceptance and that which is for reviewing purposes only. Please ensure you assign the correct file type to all supporting information. There are no handling charges for supporting information published via the journal's site at http://www.interscience.wiley.com.

Total file size

Molecular Plant Pathology has a total file size limit of 150MB per manuscript. If your figures are going to exceed this limit please save them as .TIF and compress them using LZW compression. This will reduce file size without affecting quality.

Revised manuscripts

Authors should submit the revised version of their manuscript via the website http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mpp following the instructions provided in their editorial correspondence. Authors should highlight any changes made upon revision and also provide a letter detailing their responses to the reviewers' comments. Revised manuscripts should be proof read carefully prior to submission. Unless otherwise agreed with the Editor-in-Chief, revised manuscripts must be received within two months of authors being notified of conditional acceptance pending satisfactory revision. The deadline for submission can be viewed in your corresponding author centre on the website. Click on ‘manuscripts with decisions’ and scroll down to the appropriate manuscript.

Presentation of Manuscripts

Papers should be submitted in English and should be as concise as possible. Papers should be clear and complete and should not normally exceed 8 printed pages (7000 words). Please use standard fonts such as Times, Times New Roman or Arial for the text and Symbol font for Greek letters This will help prevent inadvertent character substitutions which may make it difficult for editors and reviewers to read your manuscript.
Authors for whom English is not their first language may be advised to have their manuscript read by a native English speaker prior to submission. Alternatively, there are a range of professional English language editing services. A list of independent providers is available here: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. These services are paid for by the author and do not guarantee acceptance of the manuscript.

Types of research papers Full length or Short Communications of original research will be published along with Technical Advances. Full papers should not normally exceed 8 printed pages (7000 words). Short Communications should normally contain a maximum of 4 printed pages (3500 words). Only complete studies will be published, preliminary observations will not be considered. Technical Advances will provide a forum for innovative techniques and resources. These can be submitted as full papers or in Short Communication format.

Reviews In addition to the principal content of research papers, Molecular Plant Pathology will include major and microreviews. Major reviews are invited from all authors and will cover in depth, areas of particular interest and importance, and should normally be no more than 8 pages in length (7000 words). Our microreviews provide brief discussions of current research and should normally contain no more than 3 printed pages (2600 words). Authors wishing to submit a review or microreview should contact the Editor-in-Chief to discuss the format and content further.

A unique feature are our Pathogen Profiles. These provide an up-to-date overview of the latest research on a particular pathogen. Those interested in submitting a Pathogen Profile should contact our Pathogen Profile Editor.

Short Communications should contain a Summary not exceeding 200 words. The main body of the paper should not contain subheadings.

Layout

All sections of the manuscript should be typed double-spaced. The title page should include: the full title of the paper; the full names of all the authors; the name(s) and address(es) of the institution(s) at which the work was carried out (the present addresses of the authors, if different from the above, should appear in a footnote); the name, address, telephone and fax numbers and email address of the author to whom all correspondence and proofs should be sent; a suggested running title of not more than 50 characters, including spaces; up to 10 keywords listed in order of importance.
Please ensure that your title and keywords accurately reflect the work described. This will enable others to find and cite your article.
All full length research papers should be divided into the following sections and appear in the order: (1) Summary, not exceeding 250 words, (2) Introduction, (3) Results, (4) Discussion, (5) Experimental Procedures, (6) Acknowledgements, (7) References, (8) Tables, (9) Figure legends, (10) Figures. The Results and Discussion sections may be combined and may contain subheadings. Experimental Procedures should be sufficiently detailed to enable the experiments to be reproduced.

All pages must be numbered consecutively from the title page, and include the acknowledgements, references, tables, and figure legends. The preferred position of tables and figures should be indicated in the margin of the text.

Système International (SI) units should be used, as given in Units, Symbols and Abbreviations, published by the Royal Society of Medicine Services Ltd, 1 Wimpole Street, London W1M 8AE, UK. Abbreviations of non-standard terms should follow, in parentheses, their first full usage.

References

Authors should use the system illustrated below. Only full articles which have been published or are in press may be included in the reference list. In the text, unpublished or submitted studies should be referred to as such (e.g. J.M. Smith, unpublished), or as a personal communication. It is the authors responsibility to obtain permission from colleagues to include their work as a personal communication.

Manuscript text - references should be cited by author and date, e.g. Steeves and Sussex (1989). Joint authors should be referred to by et al. if there are more than two, e.g. Dangl et al. (1989). More than one paper from the same author(s) in the same year must be identified by the letters a, b, c, etc., placed after the year of publication. Listings of references in the text should be alphabetical, e.g. (Dangl et al., 1989; Steeves and Sussex, 1989). Reference section - references should be listed alphabetically according to the first named author. All author names should be given for each paper. The full titles of papers, chapters and books should be given, the abbreviated names of journals, with the first and last page numbers.

We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote (http://www.endnote.com) or Reference Manager (http://www.refman.com) for reference management and formatting.  EndNote reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp.

Scientific Names

Use scientific names as defined by the relevant organisation for each organism, e.g. plant viruses, latest ICTV nomenclature. Full scientific names must be given when organisms are first mentioned, with the generic name being subsequently abbreviated to the initial.

All gene names and loci should be in italic; proteins should be upright.

Figures

All figures should be supplied in the size that they will appear in the journal. With the exception of composite photographs suitable for full-page reproduction (maximum width, including lettering, 16.8 cm), all other figures should be set to a maximum width of 8 cm (including all lettering). Labelling on the figures should be in 8pt Helvetica if possible. Figure sections should be designated with lower case letters. Magnification bars should be given on electron and light microscope images.  Please ensure that electronic artwork is prepared such that, after reduction, all lettering will be clear and easy to read, i.e. no labels should be too large or too small. Avoid using tints on diagrams if possible; if they are essential to the figure then try to always make them coarse as this aids their clear reproduction. To optimise the size of figures in the PDF proof, please ensure that no large blank areas surround your figures. No artwork should be incorporated into the text files. Full details on how to submit figures are available at http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/illustration.asp.

Figure legends should contain sufficient information to be understood without reference to the text, but should not contain methods. Each should begin with a short title for the figure. All symbols and abbreviations used in the figures should be explained.

Colour images

It is the policy of Molecular Plant Pathology for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Wiley-Blackwell will require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/SN_Upw2000_X_CoW_UK_Rates.pdf or contact the Editorial Office and they will be able to email or FAX it to you.

* To read PDF files, you must have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you do not have this program, this is available as a free download from the following address: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Tables

Tables should be provided as separate files. They should have a brief title and be self-explanatory. Please ensure that Tables are provided in an editable format, for example as text within a Word file rather than an embedded image or a PDF file.

Registration of Sequences

All papers containing original nucleotide sequences must provide accession numbers. Sequence data may be submitted to any of the 3 major databases DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank. Papers containing original amino acid sequences must supply UniProt/Swiss-Prot accession numbers. All accession numbers should be incorporated into the manuscript after the reference section.

Exclusive Licence Form

Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) upon acceptance. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received by the Editorial Office. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material.  (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright  in such cases does not need to  be assigned).  After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various medium/circumstances (please see the form for further details). The Editorial Office will provide an ELF, alternatively, authors may like to download a copy from Here.

Author services - production tracking

Molecular Plant Pathology has online production tracking. Authors can sign up to follow their paper from acceptance, through the production process to publication. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/ for further information.

Proofs

You will be notified via email when your proofs are ready to download as a PDF. The corresponding author must provide an email address during manuscript submission for this. Authors should correct and return their proofs within 2 days by express (special delivery) post, or by fax if possible. Major alterations to the text will be charged to the author and may delay publication.

Offprints

A PDF offprint of each article will be supplied free. Additional paper offprints may be purchased if ordered on the form supplied with the proofs.

Cover Photograph

High quality images suitable for the cover of Molecular Plant Pathology are welcomed by the Editor-in-Chief. It is preferred, but not essential, that these should be related to submitted papers. Any prospective front cover images should be uploaded with the initial manuscript submission, accompanied by a short description. All front cover images should be 10 cm high X 15 cm wide, high resolution TIFF or EPS files.

Early View

Molecular Plant Pathology is part of the Early View service. Articles are published on a regular basis online in advance of their appearance in an online or print issue. These articles are fully peer reviewed, edited and complete - they only lack page numbers and volume/issue details - and are considered fully published from the date they first appear online. This date is shown with the article in the online table of contents. The articles are available as full text HTML or PDF and can be cited as references using their Digital Object Identifier (DOI) number. For more information on DOIs, please see http://www.doi.org/faq.html

To view all the articles currently available, please visit the journal homepage on http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/mpp and click on 'View content online' to get to Early View articles. Upon print publication, the article will be removed from the Early View area and will appear instead in the relevant online issue, complete with page numbers and volume/issue details. No other changes will be made.

Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services at www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor. Author services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their title automatically added to the system.
