About the journal

Medical Teacher

Medical Teacher addresses the needs of teachers and administrators throughout the world involved in training for the health professions. This includes courses at basic and post-basic levels as well as the increasingly important area of continuing education.

Medical Teacher provides accounts of new teaching methods, guidance on structuring courses and assessing achievement, and serves as a forum for communication between medical teachers and those involved in general education. In particular, the journal recognizes the problems teachers have in keeping up-to-date with the developments in educational methods that lead to more effective teaching and learning at a time when the content of the curriculum - from medical procedures to policy changes in health care provision - is also changing. The journal features reports of innovation and research in medical education, case studies, survey articles, practical guidelines, reviews of current literature and book reviews. All articles are peer reviewed.

Abstracting Information

Medical Teacher is covered by Australian Education Index (AEI); Current Contents/Clinical Medicine, ERIC—Current Index to Journals in Education (CJIE); EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, e-psyche, Euro-Factor Database, Human Resources Abstracts, National Database for Research into International Education (NDRI), Research Alert, SciSearch, Social Sciences Citation Index (SCI), Sociological Abstracts, Violence and Abuse Abstracts and Index Medicus/MEDLINE.

Instructions to Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Medical Teacher is read by teachers, students, researchers and administrators involved in training for the healthcare professions throughout the world. Medical Teacher publishes papers spanning the continuum of education from undergraduate/basic through postgraduate/specialist training to continuing professional development. Papers published typically, but not exclusively, relate to accounts of new methods of teaching and learning; guidance on structuring and evaluating courses and curricula; assessing achievement; and aspects of professionalism. Papers may be published in various formats including: reports of innovation and research in medical education, case studies, survey articles and practical guidelines. All articles are peer-reviewed.

Medical Teacher invites the following types of submissions:

General articles, usually between 2500-5000 words
Articles in specific formats, eg, Twelve tips, What is ? How to ? Personal View (see copies of the Journal or ask the Editorial Office for more information)
Short communications on matters of topical interest or work in progress, limited to two pages, approximately 1750 words to include references, tables and summary.

Submission requirements

Layout: Manuscripts should be typed on one side of the paper, double-spaced, with margins of at least 2.5 cm (1 inch). The first sheet should include the title of the paper, a short title not exceeding 45 characters, names of authors and the address where the work was carried out. The full postal address and email of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered.

Notes on contributors: The article should be accompanied by a short biographical note on each contributor to a maximum of 50 words per contributor.
Summary: All articles should be accompanied by a summary of 100-200 words on a separate sheet.
Practice points: Up to 5 short bullet points should be included which summarise the key messages of the article. These will be included in a box at the end of the article.
Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

References should follow the Harvard system, i.e. authors' names and year of publication in parentheses in the text, e.g. Smith (1984); or if there are more than three authors - Smith et al. (1984). If several papers from the same authors and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper in the following format:

DONALDSON, M. (1976) Development of conceptualisation, in: V. HAMILTON & M.D. VERNON (Eds) The Development of Cognitive Processes, pp. 277-303 (London, Academic Press).
GAGNE, R.M. (1977) The Conditions of Learning (New York, Holt, Rinehart & Winston).
HERRIOT, P. (1970) An Introduction to the Psychology of Language (London, Methuen).
MAGUIRE, P. (1984) The way we teach: interviewing skills, Medical Teacher, 6, p. 128.

Titles of journals should not be abbreviated.

Illustrations should not be inserted in the text but each provided separately and numbered on the back with Figure numbers, title of paper and name of author. All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as Figures and should be numbered consecutively in the text in Arabic numerals (e.g. Fig.3). A list of captions for the figures should be submitted on a separate sheet and should make interpretation possible without reference to the text. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Tables should be typed on separate sheets and be given Arabic numbers (e.g. Table 3). Their approximate position in the text should be indicated. Units should appear in parentheses in the column heading but not in the body of the table. Words or numerals should be repeated on successive lines; 'ditto' or 'do' should not be used.

Where to submit: Four complete copies of the manuscript and figures should be sent to Mrs Pat Lilley, Managing Editor, Medical Teacher, University of Dundee, Tay Park House, 484 Perth Road, Dundee DD2 1LR, UK. A disk copy is not required. The manuscript will be acknowledged as soon as possible on receipt.

Revised papers: If revisions are requested, authors should send the revised version of their article by email to l.simpson@dundee.ac.uk or on disk with one hard copy printed from the disk to the address above. It is essential that the hard copy exactly matches the disk copy.

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author, usually by pdf attachment. Proofs are supplied for checking and making essential corrections, not for general revision or alteration. Proofs should be corrected and returned to the publisher within 3 days of receipt.

Offprints: A pdf file will be supplied to the contributing author, from which 50 offprints may be printed free of charge. Authors are kindly requested not to make more than 50 copies from the pdf. Additional copies may be purchased and instructions will be sent with the proofs.

Copyright: It is a condition of publication that authors vest copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in the publisher, Taylor & Francis Ltd. This enables them to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as the original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that their records show that its use is properly authorised.

Note: Proposed future changes to submission process

Medical Teacher will be introducing a manuscript-tracking program later in 2003. This will enable us to accept electronic submissions and the whole review process will be completed electronically. Paper based submissions will also be accepted. A further announcement will be made in a few months' time.
