About the journal

Medical Image Analysis

Medical Image Analysis provides a forum for the dissemination of new research results in the field of medical image analysis, with special emphasis on efforts related to the applications of Computer Vision, virtual reality and robotics to medical imaging problems.
A quarterly journal, it publishes the highest quality, original papers that contribute to the basic science of processing, analysing and utilizing medical images for these purposes. While not limited to these alone, the typical medical image datasets of interest include those acquired from:
 Magnetic resonance
 Ultrasound
 Computed tomography
 Nuclear medicine
 X-ray
Video and range data images of the patient.

Medical Image Analysis on ScienceDirect(Opens new window)

The types of papers accepted include those that cover the development and implementation of algorithms and strategies based on the use of applied mathematics and physics to solve the following types of problems, using medical image datasets: feature extraction, segmentation, inter-study and interpatient registration, image-guided surgery and intervention, texture, shape and motion measurements, spectral analysis, digital anatomical atlases, representation of pictorial data, visualization, virtual organs for simulation and training, virtual and augmented reality for therapy planning and guidance, telemedicine with medical images, telepresence in medicine telesurgery and image-guided medical robots.

Academic and industrial researchers in the area of Medical Image Analysis, researchers in the general Computational Vision, Graphics and Robotics communities interested in problems that involve medical and biomedical images, and those involved in other areas of clinical and biomedical science that utilize data will find Medical Image Analysis the premier publication for important results in the field.

Five copies of the manuscript are required and authors are advised to keep a further copy of the manuscript and any illustrations or other material. A covering letter should identify the person (with address, fax and telephone numbers, and email address) responsible for correspondence concerning manuscripts.
Submission of a paper implies that it reports work neither under consideration for a scientific journal nor already published. If previously published tables, illustrations or more than 200 words of text are to be included, then the copyright holder's written permission must be obtained. Copies of any such permission letters should be enclosed with the paper.
All manuscripts are subject to peer review. If revisions are required for acceptance of a manuscript, at least two copies of the revised manuscript should be submitted, together with the revised version on disk, and good quality figures and illustrations.

Preparation of the manuscript

Papers must be clearly written in English. All sections of the manuscript should be typed, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only. In addition to the full title of the paper, authors should supply a running title, of less than 40 characters, and up to five keywords.
Research papers should be accompanied by an abstract, which will appear in front of the main body of the text. It should be written in complete sentences and should summarize the aims, methods, results and conclusions in less than 250 words. The abstract should be comprehensible to readers before they read the paper, and abbreviations and citations should be avoided.
Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references. Within the text, references should be cited by author's name(s) and year of publication (where there are more than two authors please use et al.). Published articles and those in press (state the journal which has accepted them and enclose a copy of the manuscript) may be included. Citations should be typed at the end of the manuscript in alphabetical order, with authors' surnames and initials inverted. References should include, in the following order: authors' names, year, paper title, journal title, volume number, issue number, inclusive page numbers and (for books only) name and address of publishers. The journal title should be abbreviated according to Index Medicus (http://gopher.nlm.nih.gov: 70/11/online/journals). References should therefore be listed as follows:

Besl, P., McKay, N., 1992. A method for registration of 3-D shapes. IEEE Trans. PAMI 14, pp. 239-256. Ohbuchi, R., Chen D., Fuchs, H., 1992. Incremental volume reconstruction and rendering for 3D ultrasound imaging. In: Robb, R.A. (Ed.), Proc. Visualization in Biomedical Computing, SPIE, 1808, International Society of Optical Engineering, Bellingham, WA, pp. 312-323.

Acknowledgements should be included at the end of the text, not in footnotes. Footnotes to the main text are acceptable and should be identified by superscripted numbers. Footnotes should appear on the page of citation. Tables should be self-explanatory and should include a brief descriptive title. Vertical rules will not be used in the published version. Any footnotes required should be indicated using superscripted letters. Illustrations should be clearly lettered and of the highest quality. Hard copies of all figures should be provided. Data captured directly from computer screens, such as computer-generated images and movies should be submitted as computer files. Most formats of images can be handled although TIFF is preferred. Please name or label each figure and its corresponding file with the figure number not an arbitrary name; printouts of these images can be submitted but authors must indicate whether the figure should be printed in colour. Half-tone photographs, e.g. CT or MRIs, must be of good quality. Artwork produced by computer drawing programs such as MacDraw or Adobe Illustrator can be submitted in most formats along with information on the program used and hard copy. Figure legends should also be supplied, and all symbols and abbreviations used in the figures should be defined.
If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures, then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork.

Please note: Should you not opt for colour in print, please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations, as by converting colour figures to 'grey scale' for the printed version, technical complications may arise.

Electronic submissions Only the final version of the manuscript can be submitted on disk, along with a paper-printed version which is identical to the file. The disk should be clearly labeled and the word processor used should be mentioned.

LaTeX LateX files of papers that have been accepted for publication may be sent to the Publisher by e-mail or on a diskette (3.5" MS-DOS). If the file is suitable, proofs will be produced without rekeying the text. The article should be encoded in ESP-LaTeX, standard LaTeX, or AMS-LaTeX (in document style "article"). The ESP-LaTeX obtained from our server, together with instructions on how to prepare a file, is available from the Publisher.
The styles are also available on the Comprehensive Tex Archive Network (CTAN) at sites at USA, UK and Germany.

Here you can find more information on Electronic Artwork

Illustrative material (original figures or high-quality glossy prints, or photographs showing a sharp contrast) should be included separately.

No changes from the accepted version are permissible, without the explicit approval by the Editors. The Publisher reserves the right to decide whether to use the author's file or not. If the file is sent by e-mail, the full name of the journal should be mentioned in the subject field of the message to identify the paper. Authors should include an ASCII table (available from the Publisher) in their files to enable the detection of transmission errors. The files should be mailed to Log-in Department, Elsevier, P.O. Box 103, 1000 AC Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Fax: +31 20 4852 521 E-mail: i.plomp@elsevier.nl.
For the purpose of further correspondence the manuscript should end with a complete mailing address, preferably including email address, of at least one of the authors.

Submission checklist:

  • Five hard copies of manuscript plus one set of good-quality figures.
  • Covering letter with postal and electronic addresses.
  • Videos with description and timing, see Electronic Annexes.
Final version checklist:

1. Three hard copies of manuscript plus one set of good-quality figures.
2. Covering letter with postal and electronic addresses.
3. Floppy disks containing manuscript and electronic versions of figures and/or illustrations. If submitting tar-compressed data, please contact the Log-in Department.
4. Videos with description and timing, see Electronic Annexes.

After acceptance

Notification. You will be notified by the Publisher of the receipt of your contribution, and invited to send an electronic file of the accepted version, if this is not yet available. After acceptance any correspondence should be addressed to the Publisher.
Page proofs are sent out to the Author in order to check that no undetected errors have arisen in the typesetting or file conversion process. In the proofs only typesetting errors may be corrected. No changes in, or addition to, the accepted paper will be accepted.
Copyright transfer. In the course of the production process the authors will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.
