Instructions to Authors
**No Page Charges**
Papers should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mve. Full upload instructions and support are available online from the submission site via the 'Get Help Now' button. Please submit your covering letter or comments to the editor when prompted online.Papers submitted to Medical and Veterinary Entomology should be original research papers on the biology and control of arthropods of medical or veterinary importance such as ectoparasites, endoparasites, vectors of pathogens affecting humans and other animals and arthropods of forensic importance. The principal interests are in experimental applied entomology, genetics, epidemiology, vector transmission, biosystematics and distribution, ecology, life-cycles, behaviour and environment, biological and chemical control methods. In general, technical reports of insecticide trials are not published unless they present the results of large-scale field trials, or the use of particularly novel compounds. Insect and parasite distribution reports must be of more than local interest. Reviews and opinion papers are encouraged. This journal is covered in FO:VM.
Particular attention should be taken to adhere exactly to the journal style in all respects. Papers should be in clear concise English, not normally exceeding 6000 words of text (10 printed pages) but longer papers of particular merit may be accepted. Papers submitted must not have been published or be under consideration for publication by any other journal. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter(s) signed by all the authors stating that they have read and contributed to the work presented in the manuscript.
We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote for reference management and formatting. EndNote reference styles can be searched for here.
Manuscripts not complying with these conditions will be returned to the authors.
Ethical considerations will be taken into account in judging the acceptability of papers and the editors' decision on this, as on all other aspects, will be final. A PDF of each paper will be provided free to the corresponding author following publication. Reprints may be ordered from the publishers at current prices when proofs are returned.
The name and full postal address, phone, fax and email address of the author to whom readers should address correspondence should be given on the first page; this will appear as a footnote in the journal.
Measurements should be given in SI units. Simple measures of variability (e.g. standard error or confidence limits) should always accompany means. The same data should not be given in both tables and figures.
References should conform to the 'name-and-date' system; titles of periodicals must be given in full in the list of references at the end of the paper. The title of the paper should be informative but preferably not exceed twenty words. A short title (for page headlines) of not more than forty letters, including spaces, should also be supplied. Taxonomic affiliation and authority should be given at the first mention of a species in the abstract, not in the title. Authority only should follow the taxonomic name in full at first mention in the text. The paper should include a self-contained abstract, presented as a series of factual statements which summarise the results. The abstract should follow under the title. Authors should provide a maximum of ten key words.
Tables with their legends must be on separate sheets. Figure legends should be grouped together on a separate sheet. Both figure and table legends should be self-explanatory.
Figures must be boldly drawn in black. Colour may be used, colour artwork is reproduced online free of charge but authors will be charged the full cost for the reproduction in print. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Wiley-Blackwell require you to complete and return a Colour Work Agreement form before your paper can be published. Details can be found in the colour work agreement section below.
Figures should be submitted at least twice their final printed size with lettering large enough to allow appropriate reduction on the printed page. Figures should be numbered serially. Authors should avoid unnecessarily large lettering. When preparing electronic figures please remove default settings, such as background shading, gridlines, borders and headings. Maps must be clear, drawn with high quality continuous lines, with scales and compass orientation. Photographs of good contrast are acceptable for half-tone reproduction when they are a real contribution to the text.
Initially, graphics and bitmap files should be submitted in an easy to read format, such as Word or as a PDF. Once a manuscript is accepted, it is preferable that graphics (e.g. line artwork) be provided in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS) and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). For more information, please see section below.
Early View Medical and Veterinary Entomology is covered by Wiley-Blackwell's Early View service. Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article. More information about DOIs can be found at: http://www.doi.org/faq.html.
Offprints The corresponding author will receive a PDF file of the article free of charge. Additional offprints may be ordered from offprint@cosprinters.com
Exclusive Licence Form Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various medium/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office.
Please click here to download a copy of this form.
OnlineOpen OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley InterScience, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive. For the full list of terms and conditions, see http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/authorresources/onlineopen.html#OnlineOpen_Terms.
Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the payment form available from our website at:
https://secure.interscience.wiley.com/funded_access.html
Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to. All OnlineOpen articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.
Note to NIH Grantees Pursuant to NIH mandate, Wiley-Blackwell will post the accepted version of contributions authored by NIH grant-holders to PubMed Central upon acceptance. This accepted version will be made publicly available 12 months after publication. For further information, see www.wiley.com/go/nihmandate.
Author material archive policy Please note that unless specifically requested, Wiley-Blackwell will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted 2 months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the Editorial Office or Production Editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.
Colour work agreement forms It is the policy of Medical and Veterinary Entomology for authors to pay the full cost for the print reproduction of their colour artwork. Colour artwork will be published online free of charge. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Wiley-Blackwell require you to complete and return a Colour Work Agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor at: mve@wiley.com and they will be able to email or FAX a form to you. Once completed, please return the form to the Production Editor at the address below:

Any article received by Wiley-Blackwell without colour work will not be published until the form has been returned. *To read PDF files, you must have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you do not have this program, this is available as a free download from the following web address: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Preparation of electronic artwork Once your manuscript has been accepted, we would like to receive your artwork. Please prepare your figures according to the publisher's Electronic Artwork Guidelines.
• Create EPS files for images containing lineart. EPS files should be saved with fonts embedded (and with a TIFF preview if possible). The following packages can be used to create EPS files: Adobe Illustrator 7.0 and above, Deneba Canvas 6.0 and above, CorelDRAW 7.0 and above, SigmaPlot 8.01 and above. Other programs may also be able to create EPS files - use the SAVE AS or EXPORT functions. EPS files can be produced from other applications (e.g. PowerPoint, Excel) BUT results can be unpredictable (e.g. fonts and shading not converted correctly, lines missing, dotted lines becoming solid).
• Create TIFF files images containing half-tones/photographs. For scanned images, the scanning resolution (at final image size, see above for a guide to sizes) should be as follows to ensure adequate reproduction: lineart, >800 d.p.i.; half-tones, >300 d.p.i. Figures containing both halftone and line images, >600 d.p.i. The following programs can be used to create TIFF files: Adobe Photoshop 4.0 and above, Adobe Illustrator 9.0 and GraphPad Prism 3. Other programs may also be able to create TIFF files - use the SAVE AS or EXPORT functions.
• Black and white images should be supplied as 'grayscale'; colour images should be supplied as CMYK. • Multipart figures should be supplied in the final layout in one file, labelled as (A), (B) etc • Supply figures at final size widths if possible: 19 picas (single column) or 40 picas (double column) • Use sans serif, true-type fonts for labels if possible, preferably Arial or Helvetica, or Times (New) Roman if serif fonts required. • Ensure all lines and lettering are clear.
Proofs The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a web site. A working e-mail address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following web site: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.
Author Services Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services. Author Services enables authors to track articles--once they have been accepted--through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated emails at key stages of production so they do not need to contact the production editor to check on progress. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/ for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including faqs and tips on article preparation, submission, and more.
