About the journal

 Cover

The JOURNAL OF ULTRASOUND IN MEDICINE is dedicated to the rapid, accurate publication of original articles dealing with all aspects of diagnostic ultrasound, particularly its direct application to patient care, but also relevant basic science, advances in instrumentation, and biologic effects. Research papers, case reports, review articles, technical notes, and letters to the editor are published.

Instructions to Authors

I. Types of Manuscripts
The Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine publishes manuscripts in the following categories:

Article: An article is a research paper that provides new information derived from original data and usually utilizes extensive statistical analysis.

Case Series: A case series is a paper that describes a group of cases or particular observations with unique imaging features or involving interventional procedures never before reported. Case series are usually retrospective and not associated with extensive statistical analysis.

Case Report: A case report is a brief paper that describes a single case with unusual sonographic or clinical features that have not been reported previously.

Review Article: A review article is an analysis of the current status of a particular topic. It is not an original article with new data but represents a well-balanced summary of a timely subject, with reference to the literature. Review articles are usually invited by the editor, although they can be submitted. All review articles, even if invited, are peer reviewed.

Editorial: An editorial is a short paper that describes the personal views of the author on a particular subject. An editorial is usually invited by the editor. It includes some review of the literature in making a point, although it is clearly an opinion piece rather than a review of the subject.

Point/Counterpoint: A point/counterpoint usually consists of 2 short articles, published together, that present opposing viewpoints by authorities on a subject. These short articles, invited by the editor, include only a few references used to bolster each author's opinion.

Image Presentation: An image presentation is a pictorial essay in which the message is contained in the images presented. The text is short (no more than 5 double-spaced pages); however, the legends to the images are key. The presentation does not contain data or a new statistical analysis but rather provides its message through unique and timely illustrations.

Technical Advance: A technical advance is a paper that describes a new method, procedure, technology, or treatment with a practical approach.

Letter to the Editor: A letter to the editor offers brief (250-500 word) criticism or comment regarding published material and must be objective, constructive, and educational

Manuscripts are considered for publication with the understanding that they are submitted solely to the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine and are not under consideration elsewhere.

II. Manuscript Style
Title Page
This first page contains the complete title of the article, names and degrees of all authors, and the institutional affiliations of authors.

The corresponding author should be indicated, including a complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address.

Text
The text of the manuscript must be divided into the following ordered sections: Abstract (see below), Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and References.

Abstract With Key Words
Abstracts are required for articles, case series, review articles, image presentations, and technical advances. The abstract should be structured -- divided into Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. It should not exceed 250 words. Three to six key words should be provided for indexing purposes.

Tables and Figures
Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals and contain titles. Vertical lines should not be used in tables. Each table must contain all necessary information so that it may stand alone, independent of text. Each table must be submitted on a separate page.

Figures should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Identification letters or numbers must not appear on the image area. Appropriate figure legends must be provided. The Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine will pay for the publication of color illustrations deemed essential by the editors.

All tables and figures must be cited in numeric order in text.

Acknowledgments
On a separate page, preceding the References, contributions made by colleagues who are not authors of the paper should be acknowledged. This page should also include acknowledgments of published material reproduced with permission, as well as any related grant support received.

References
Each reference must be cited numerically and listed in the order in which it appears in the text. When more than 6 authors are included in a single reference, et al replaces the names of all authors after the first 3.

Accepted work in press includes the journal title or the publisher if it is a book. Material not accepted for publication cannot be included as a reference.

Abbreviations of journal titles conform to those used in the National Library of Medicine's Index Medicus. The style and punctuation of references follow the format illustrated by the following examples:

III. Submission Process
ONLINE Submission
Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts electronically through the journal's Web-based Rapid Review system. To submit, go to http://www.rapidreview.com/AIUM2/CALogon.jsp or access the system through the AIUM's website (www.aium.org). Once in Rapid Review, first-time users should click on "New to Rapid Review" and proceed as instructed. Details on electronic submission are available to users after logging onto the Rapid Review System and clicking on "1-2-3 Instructions for Submitting."

The following formats are acceptable for ONLINE manuscript submission:

Text: Microsoft Word and WordPerfect are preferred.

Images and Graphics: TIFF, EPS, PostScript, or PDF files are acceptable for initial submission, but on acceptance, graphics for publication must be submitted as TIFF or EPS files. (PostScript or PDF files cannot be used for final print production.) Color and black-and-white halftones should be submitted as TIFF files. Line art should be submitted as EPS files. Authors may use PowerPoint graphics embedded in the text for review purposes; on acceptance, PowerPoint graphics must be converted to an acceptable file format for final production.

Detailed requirements for correctly preparing text and artwork are available by logging onto Rapid Review and clicking on the "More About File Formats" button or visiting http://cjs.cadmus.com/da/ and clicking on the "General Requirements" link.

Supplemental Video Clips: Supplemental video clips can now be submitted for posting online. Video files must be submitted in QuickTime Video format.

HARD COPY Submission
Authors who are unable to submit online may submit hard copy manuscripts. (Text on diskette or CD-ROM must accompany hard copy submissions for both initial and final versions.) Hard copy submissions must adhere to the following format specifications:

A brief cover letter identifying the type of submission (new manuscript, minor revision, or major revision), as well as the type of manuscript (Article, Case Series, Case Report, Review Article, Editorial, Point/Counterpoint, Technical Advance, or Image Presentation), must accompany the manuscript submission. The cover letter should identify the author responsible for correspondence, including address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address.

The manuscript, including legend and reference pages, should be typed double-spaced on plain white paper with 1-inch margins and should follow the style outlined in Section II. All pages must be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page. The primary author's name should appear on the top right corner of every page. The manuscript should be stapled. Hard copy manuscript submissions must be accompanied by an electronic version of the text on diskette or CD-ROM.

Figures: Figures accompanying hard copy manuscript submissions may be submitted digitally on diskette or CD-ROM and should adhere to the "Final Digital Art Requirements" section. For hard copy image submissions, 2 sets of unmounted figures (glossy photographs and/or drawings) must be provided. Each set of figures should be enclosed in a separate envelope. Do not submit original materials, as they are not returned to authors, regardless of publication determination.

Figure legends should not appear on the figures but should be provided on a separate page and numbered consecutively.

The first author's name, the figure number, and the top of the figure must be indicated on an adhesive label on the back of each figure.

Hard copy submissions should be mailed to the following address:
Beryl R. Benacerraf, MD, Editor-in-Chief
Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine
333 Longwood Avenue, Suite 400
Boston, MA 02115 USA

Completed Transfer of Copyright and Conflict of Interest Form
A completed transfer of copyright and conflict of interest form must be submitted with each manuscript, in accordance with United States copyright law. To obtain this form using Rapid Review, click on the "Copyright Form" button to download or go to http://www.aium.org/publications/jum/copyrightForm.pdf.

Permission to Reproduce Published Material (if Applicable)
Written permission from the author and publisher of any previously published figure, table, or lengthy passage of text included in the manuscript must be submitted with the paper. If any form of preliminary publication, other than an abstract of not more than 400 words, has occurred or is contemplated, a reprint or manuscript of the actual or proposed preliminary publication should accompany the manuscript.

IV. Authority/Responsibility
The intellectual content of the paper is the responsibility of the author; the editor and the AIUM accept no responsibility for the opinions and statements of authors. While every effort is made by the editor and editorial staff to avoid any inaccurate or misleading information, they accept no liability for the consequences of wrong information. The authors agree to keep the editor and publisher fully indemnified against any liability or claim that may arise from the publication of incorrect or misleading data.

V. Editing
Accepted manuscripts will be copyedited to eliminate grammatical and typographical errors and to ensure conciseness and clarity. The corresponding author will receive proofs of the copyedited article before publication.

VI. Reprints
Reprints may be ordered by using the reprint order form that accompanies proofs. Color reprints should be ordered before publication, because postpublication orders are substantially more expensive. Black-and-white reprints can be ordered at any time, with no additional late fees. To ensure prompt delivery after publication, place reprint orders before publication. For additional information about reprints, phone the Cadmus Journal Services Reprints Office at 800-257-5531, ext 3132 or 804-261-3132.

VII. Copyright Permission Requests
The AIUM processes all permission requests. Address permission letters to: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, Permission Request, AIUM, 14750 Sweitzer Lane, Suite 100, Laurel, MD 20707-5906 USA.
