About the journal

Journal of Sound and Vibration on ScienceDirect(Opens new window)

The Journal of Sound and Vibration is an independent journal devoted to the prompt publication of original papers reporting the results of experimental and theoretical work providing new information on any aspect of either sound or vibration. It was founded and operates on the premise that the subject of sound and vibration requires a journal available equally to all the many kinds of specialists and practitioners concerned, so that it can maintain constant contact among them and thus make possible timely awareness both of areas of mutual interest and of techniques and discoveries in one area which may be applicable to others. To this end, the Journal's scope is generally inclusive. Specifically, papers on problems in vibration and sound from the engineering, physical, physiological, and psychological disciplines are included; papers on specialized topics such as stress propagation, vibration and/or sound radiation of structures, instrumentation and data analysis in sound and vibration, underwater acoustics, electroacoustics, noise and noise control, environmental aspects of sound and vibration, building acoustics and vibration, and vibroacoustic properties of materials are included: articles of current interest which transcend the usual specialization boundaries, and also articles introducing new fields of research or reviewing progres are included. The Editors are responsible for journal policy, in consultation with the members of the Editorial Board. Every effort is made by the Editors and publishers to ensure prompt publication. The Journal is published in English.

The journal includes announcements of meetings, book reviews, and comments of either a specific or general nature on previously published work. Now with 50 issues per year, the journal provides an invaluable tool for gaining up-to-date information on the rapidly developing field of sound and vibration.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers
Each paper submitted for publication is normally subject to review and criticism by independent, anonymous referees, and authors are provided with copies of these reviews so that they can make revisions and improvements of their manuscripts before publication. Comments, of either a specific or a general nature, on previously published work and brief reports on new work, for which quick publication is desired, should be submitted as Letters to the Editor.

Authors are requested to submit four copies of a paper or Letter to the Editor to the relevant Editor as listed below.

All material from authors in Europe (including all countries of the former Soviet Union), the Middle East from Iran westwards, and Africa should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief, Professor M. Petyt, JSV Editorial Office, Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, The University, Southampton, SO17 1BJ, England; Tel: 44 2380 592064, Fax 44 2380 593241, E-mail: jsv@isvr.soton.ac.uk.

All material from authors in North America, Central America (including The Caribbean), South America and Hawaii should be submitted to the Americas Editor, Professor W. Soedel, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Purdue University, 140 S. Intramural Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47907-2031, USA; Tel: 1 765-494-0117, Fax: 1 765 494 0787, E-mail: dmiller@ecn.purdue.edu

Book Reviews
For a review to be published in a given issue of the Journal, the final manuscript must reach the Editor-in-Chief at least fourteen weeks before the publication date. This section is published five times a year (March, May, July, October and December).

Announcements
Contributed announcements of, and brief reports on, meetings or discussions of interest to readers may be submitted for publication. Contributions can be made by submitting to the JSV WWW Editor Professor Y.I. Bobrovnitskii, Russian Academy of Science, Engineering Research Institute, Moscow 101830, Russia, E-mail: bobrovni@orc.ru

Manuscript Preparation
General
Contributors are requested to present the main outlines of their work in a manner intelligible to readers who are specialists in other fields. Specialist terms and symbols should be defined, lucidity should not be sacrificed for the sake of brevity, and both verbal and mathematical jargon should be avoided. Also avoid personal pronouns such as 'I', 'we' and 'our' etc.; use an impersonal style instead. Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The first page should contain the title of the manuscript, the authors' names, and the affiliation and address of the corresponding author (including a Fax and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Please also indicate the total number of pages, tables and figures submitted. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Most word-processing formats (ideally Microsoft Word or WordPerfect) can be accepted. Rich-text format (.rtf extension) is acceptable, but plain text (.txt extension) files are discouraged. Graphics should be submitted as EPS, Tiff or MS Office files. Virtually all common artwork creation software is capable of saving in these formats, and authors should refer to the artwork instructions mentioned under 'Author Enquiries'. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers.

Abstracts
Each paper (except for Letters to the Editor) should possess a self-contained abstract of approximately 200 words. References, figures and tables should not be cited in the abstract.

Text
Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendices, References, Figure captions and then Tables. If a list of symbols is included it should form the last Appendix. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers, but should be avoided wherever possible. Oxford English Dictionary spelling should be used throughout.

Units
The Journal follows the SI units system, details of which may be found in the British Standards Institution Publication PD 5686, 'The Use of SI Units'.

Maths
Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in an appendix. Mathematical symbols are normally printed in italics except for functions and special symbols which are printed Roman upright: e.g., sin, cosh, J0(. . .) (Bessel function of zero order), etc., e (the natural logarithm base), d (the differential symbol), j (or i) = , Im, Re, mod. All matrices, vectors and tensors are printed bold upright. If not typed bold they should be underlined with a wavy line every time they occur. Equations should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-hand side of the page. Equation numbers are distinguished in the text from reference numbers by being enclosed in parentheses: e.g. equation (5).

References
All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. Since Paterson [1]), and give the full reference in a numerical list at the end of the paper.
References should be given in the following form:

Work accepted for publication but not yet published should be referred to as "in press".

Illustrations
All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as 'Fig(s)' and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. The indication 'Top' must be given, if necessary. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Wherever possible, graphs should be boxed in, and scale divisions should be marked on the inside of the boxes. Grids should not be shown. Insofar as possible, explanations should be placed in the legend; the drawing itself should contain a minimum of lettering.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Where lettering is to be included this should be superimposed on tracing paper. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: Where colour figures are required the author will incur the costs at the current colour printing prices.

Authors should note that illustrations will not be returned unless specifically requested.

Submission on Disk after Acceptance
Elsevier Science now publishes all manuscripts using electronic production methods and strongly encourages submission on disk after acceptance. Please send the electronic files of your article along with the hardcopy of the accepted version. To ensure fast and easy processing of your submission, please adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Save text and graphics on separate disks.
2. Label all disks with your name, a short version of the article title, the journal to be published in, and the filenames. Please also include details of the software and platform (PC, Mac, UNIX, etc.) used to create your files.
3. Ensure that the files on the disk match exactly the hardcopy. In cases of discrepancy, the hardcopy version will be used as the definitive version. For specific enquires on word-processing formats and file types for graphics in the preparation of electronic artwork, consult http://authors.elsevier.com. Under 'Publisher Information' you will find 'Artwork Instructions', and also 'Getting Published with Elsevier Science', and from there 'Text file guidelines' and 'LaTex file guidelines'.
