About the journal

The Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience publishes original research articles and review papers in clinical psychiatry (adult and child) and neuroscience that relate to major psychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia, affective disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. The journal therefore provides a forum for original basic and clinical science research that will present its readership with an integrated perspective on current and emerging issues in clinical and biological psychiatry. In this respect, the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience represents a new and unique concept in communication that will bring together the latest advances in both psychiatry and neuroscience.

The Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience is published by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). All editorial matter in the journal represents the opinions of the authors and not necessarily those of the CMA.

The CMA assumes no responsibility or liability for damages arising from any error or omission, or from use of any information or advice contained in the journal, including articles, editorials, reviews, abstracts, letters and advertisements.

All prescription drug advertisements have been cleared by the Pharmaceutical Advertising Advisory Board.

Instructions to Authors
General information

Submit four copies to the Editorial Office, Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience, Canadian Medical Association, 1867 Alta Vista Dr., Ottawa ON  K1G 3Y6 Canada. All correspondence will be directed to the first-named author unless otherwise indicated. Manuscript submissions must include a covering letter stating the contributions of each author to the paper, based on the authorship standards established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (available at www.icmje.org). The covering letter must also confirm that the manuscript represents original material, has not been published (except in abstract form) after undergoing peer review, and is not under consideration for print or electronic publication elsewhere. Authors will be notified as soon as possible of the outcome of the peer-review process. Please include a fax number and email address. Papers accepted for publication are edited for conformity to Journal style according to the standards set by the Council of Science Editors. (Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers. 6th ed.).

Types of submissions

The Journal publishes full-length articles (research papers or reviews), brief reports, commentaries and letters to the editor, which may be submitted in either English or French.

Manuscript requirements

All papers should be typed double-spaced throughout, including references and tables. Full-length research articles should normally be divided into Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion sections. They should not normally exceed 12 typed, double-spaced pages of text. Review articles should not normally exceed 20 typed pages of text. Brief reports should normally be divided into the same sections as full-length research articles. Letters to the editor should not exceed 600 words. Letters that pertain to recent articles in the Journal will be sent to the authors for response.

Each major section (title page, text, references, tables, figures, figure captions) should begin on a new page. The pages of the manuscript should be arranged as follows.

Title page

The title page should contain the title, names of all authors and their affiliations, the full address, telephone number, fax number and email address of the corresponding author. A running title of no more than 60 spaces should also be provided.

Abstracts

Research papers and brief reports
Abstracts of research papers must be structured according to the format proposed by Haynes and colleagues (Ann Intern Med 1990;113:69-76), summarized below. Abstracts of basic science articles should use a similar format, adjusted for basic science research.

Objective: State the main questions or objectives of the study and the main hypothesis tested, if any.

Design: Describe the basic design of the study, indicating, as appropriate, use of randomization, blinding, criterion standards for diagnostic tests, temporal direction (retrospective or prospective), etc.

Setting: Indicate the study setting and the level of clinical care (e.g., primary or tertiary, private practice or institutional).

Patients (or participants): State the selection procedures, the entry criteria and the numbers of participants entering and finishing the study. Specify the dates of the study period.

Interventions: Describe, if appropriate, the essential features of any interventions, including their method and duration of administration.

Outcome measure(s): Indicate the primary study outcome measure(s) as planned before data collection began.

Results: State the main results of the study using actual numbers. Describe measurements that are not evident from the nature of the main results and indicate any blinding. If possible, the results should be accompanied by confidence intervals (most often the 95% interval) and the exact level of statistical significance. For comparative studies confidence intervals should relate to the differences between groups. Absolute values should be indicated when risk changes or effect sizes are given. No data should be reported in the abstract that do not appear elsewhere.

Conclusions: State only those conclusions of the study that are directly supported by the evidence reported, along with their clinical application (avoiding speculation and overgeneralization) and an indication of whether additional study is required before the information should be used in clinical settings. Equal emphasis must be given to positive and negative findings of equal scientific merit.

Systematic review articles
Abstracts of review articles and meta-analyses must be structured according to the format proposed by Haynes and colleagues (Ann Intern Med 1990;113:69-76), summarized below.

Objective: State the primary objective of the review.

Data sources: Summarize the data sources used, including time restrictions, indexing terms and constraints.

Study selection: Identify the number of studies reviewed and the criteria used for their selection.

Data extraction: Describe guidelines used for extracting data and how they were applied.

Data synthesis: State the main results of the review and the methods used to obtain these results.

Conclusions: State primary conclusions and their clinical applications, avoiding overgeneralization. Suggest areas for additional research if needed.

Case reports and traditional review articles
An unstructured abstract of not more than 150 words stating the key points of the article should accompany these types of articles.

Medical subject headings

A list of medical subject headings (US National Library of Medicine [NLM]), suitable for indexing, should be supplied after the abstract.

References

References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends for illustrations by arabic numerals in angle brackets. References cited only in tables or in legends should be numbered in accordance with the sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or illustration.

Use the style of the examples that follow, which are based on the formats used by the NLM in Index Medicus. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. Consult the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus, published annually as a separate publication by the library and as a list in the January issue of Index Medicus. The list can also be obtained through the library's Web site (www.nlm.nih.gov).

References to papers accepted but not yet published should be designated as "in press"; authors should obtain verification that such papers have been accepted for publication. Information from manuscripts submitted but not accepted should be cited in the text as "unpublished observations" with written permission from the source.

Avoid citing a "personal communication" unless it provides essential information not available from a public source, in which case the name and position of the person and date of communication should be cited in parentheses in the text. Authors should obtain written permission and confirmation of accuracy from the source of a personal communication.

The references must be verified by the author(s) against the original documents.

Tables

Tables should not duplicate data presented in figures and must be self-explanatory. The body of the table and all footnotes should be typed double-spaced, each on a separate page and numbered consecutively in Arabic numbers. Footnotes are designated by *, ? ? ? ? **, etc. All tables must be identified by a brief but descriptive title; abbreviations should be explained and units of measure specified.

Acknowledgements

Research or project support should be listed in an acknowledgements section. Authors may also wish to acknowledge the assistance of staff and colleagues in this section. Those colleagues who have made substantive contributions to the manuscript will be asked to sign a form granting permission for formal acknowledgement before the publication of the paper.

Authorship criteria

In accordance with the May 2000 statement on authorship issued by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience requires that authorship credit only be assigned to individuals who meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • he/she has made a substantial contribution either to the conception and design, acquisition of data, or to the analysis and interpretation of the data;
  • he/she has made a substantial contribution to drafting the article or revising it critically;
  • he/she has given final approval of the version of the article to be published and can certify that no other individuals not listed as authors have made substantial contributions to the paper.

The acquisition of funding, collection of data, or general supervision of the research group responsible for the study do not justify authorship. Individuals who have made such a contribution to the manuscript should instead be listed in an acknowledgements section.

Before a manuscript is accepted for publication, authors will receive a Contributors' Information Form, on which they must explain their specific contribution to the work descriped in the manuscript.

Drugs

Generic names should be used in text, tables and figures. Trade names may be mentioned in parentheses in the first text reference to the drug, but should not appear in titles, figures or tables. When a trade name is used, it should be capitalized; generic or chemical names are not capitalized.

Copyright policy

The copyright transfer agreement must be signed and returned to the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience by the authors of accepted manuscripts before publication.

Ethical considerations

Manuscripts that involve investigations on human subjects must include a statement noting that the protocol was approved by an appropriate ethics committee. Manuscripts describing studies in which there was direct contact with humans must state that informed consent was obtained after the nature of the procedure(s) had been fully explained. Manuscripts that involve investigations on animals must include a statement that all procedures complied with institutional guidelines for animal care.

Before a paper is accepted for publication, its authors will be asked to complete a checklist disclosing any competing interests (e.g., consultancies, honoraria, stock ownership) related to products figuring prominently in the paper, or to competing products.

Manuscripts based on studies funded by contracts (not grants) from any source including commercial firms, private foundations or governments must be accompanied by a statement describing both the authors' and the sponsor's role in the design of the study; the collection, analysis and interpretation of data; the writing of the paper; and the decision to submit the paper for publication. The journal will not review or publish manuscripts based on studies that are conducted under conditions that allow the sponsor to have sole control of the data or to withhold publication.
