About the journal

The Journal of Product Innovation Management is dedicated to the advancement of management practice in all of the functions involved in the total process of product innovation. Its purpose is to bring to managers and students of product innovation the theoretical structures and the practical techniques that will enable them to operate at the cutting edge of effective management practice. The scope is broad, taking account of those issues that are crucial to successful product innovation in the organization's external as well as internal environment. The intent is to be informative, thought-provoking, and intellectually challenging and thereby to contribute to the development of better managers.
The Journal takes a multifunctional, multidisciplinary, international approach to the issues facing those for whom product innovation is an important concern. It presents the research, experiences, and insights of academics, consultants, practicing managers, economists, scientists, lawyers, sociologists, and thoughtful contributors from other professions and disciplines. Since approaches to product innovation often differ in different economies and cultures, the Journal draws on the work of authors from all over the world. Articles are based on empirical research, well-considered observations of management experience, and state-of-the-art reviews of important issues as well as conceptual and theoretical developments.
The Journal invites innovative, provocative, even heretical viewpoints and special essays that will stimulate and advance the management of product innovation

Instructions to Authors

The Journal of Product Innovation Management Information for Authors

All manuscripts should be submitted to: Professor Abbie Griffin, Editor, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, 350 Commerce West, Champaign, IL 61820.
Manuscripts are received with the understanding that they are original, unpublished works and are not being submitted elsewhere.

Manuscript. Submit the original and two copies of the manuscript, typed double-spaced, on standard 81/2 x 11-in. or 21 x 29.6 cm bond paper. On the title page include names and addresses of authors, academic, or professional affiliations, and the complete address of the author to whom proofs should be sent. Also provide a running title of less than 45 characters and spaces, which will appear on alternate pages in the journal. The second page should include the title of the article and a brief biography of the author(s). The third page should include the title and abstract of 150 words or less. The text proper begins on the following page and ends with a citation of acknowledgments, whenever appropriate. References, tabular material, figure captions, and footnotes follow. Tables and figures are numbered in order of their appearance with Arabic numerals and each should have a brief descriptive title. Footnotes to the text are numbered consecutively with superior Arabic numerals.

Computer Disks. Authors are encouraged to submit a 31/2" HD/DD computer disk to the editorial office. Please observe the following criteria. Send only hard copy when first submitting your paper for acceptance and review. When your paper has been refereed, revised if necessary, and accepted, send a disk containing the final version with the final hard copy. Make certain that the disk and hard copy match exactly. Specify what software was used, including which release, e.g., Wordperfect 6.1. Specify what computer was used (IBM compatible PC, Apple Macintosh, etc.). The article file should include all textual material (text, references, tables, figure captions etc.) and separate illustration files, if available. The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of this journal as given in Information for Authors. The file should be single spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-line feature, i.e., returns at the end of paragraphs only. Place two returns after every element, such as title, headings, paragraphs, figure and table callouts. Be sure to keep a back-up disk for reference and safety.

Manuscript Review All articles are carefully selected for publication by management and academic referees who search for powerful and original ideas that are presented in a fresh and interesting fashion. The review process provides authors with thoughtful, constructive criticism. All reviews are "double blind"; i.e., reviewers do not know whose manuscripts they are reviewing and authors do not know who their reviewers are. (Authors should avoid revealing their identity in such ways as making personal reference in the text or citing their own publications with undue frequency. In the case of manuscripts describing personal experiences or the practices of a particular organization, special review procedures are employed.) Manuscripts by members of the PDMA Publication and Editorial Boards are subjected to the same review procedure as all other submissions. Articles for sections titled "From Experience" and "Perspective" are reviewed as editorial contributions.

Mathematical Notation. Use typewritten letters, numbers, and symbols whenever possible. Identify boldface, script letters, etc. at their first occurrence. Distinguish between one and the letter ``l' and between zero and the letter ``O' whenever confusion might result.

References. References are indicated in the text by full size Arabic numbers in brackets, i.e., [1]. Footnotes to the text are indicated by superior numbers and are placed at the bottom of the page on which they are cited. The following reference style should be used, with authors listed alphabetically and entries numbered:

Journal article: Cooper, Robert G. New product success in industrial firms. Industrial Marketing and Management 11(2):215-223 (July 1982).

Book: 2. Steele, Lowell J. Innovation in Big Business. New York: Elsevier, 1975, pp. 1-80.

Chapter in edited book: 3. Ayre, Robert and Shapanka, Adele. Explicit technological substitution forecasts in long range input-out models. In:Technological Substitution: Forecasting Techniques and Applications, Harold Linstone and Devendra Sahal (eds.). New York: Elsevier, 1976, pp. 1-3.

These, reports and other unpublished materials: Style as a journal article with as much source material as possible.

Illustrations. Unmounted, glossy, black-and-white photographs or India ink drawings on white paper should accompany the original copy of the manuscript. Photocopies are suitable for the other copies of the manuscript. To facilitate identification and processing, on the back of each figure (in light pencil) write the number, first author's name, and indicate which side is the top. Captions appear on a separate page.

Proofs and Reprints. The corresponding author will receive proofs, which should be corrected and returned within 48 hours of receipt or the article will be published without author's corrections. The author will be responsible for proofreading the manuscript; the publisher is not responsible for any error not marked by the author on the proof. Corrections on the proof are limited to printer's errors; no substantial author changes are allowed at this stage. Reprints may be ordered prior to publication; consult the price list accompanying proofs.

Copyright. Upon acceptance of an article by the journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under the U.S. Copyright Law.
