Submission implies that the paper has not been published previously, is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and if accepted will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. Authors are solely responsible for the factual accuracy of their paper.

Submission by ordinary mail: Send three paper copies and a cover letter providing full contact information and certifying that the paper has not been submitted or published elsewhere. Do not send the electronic version of the paper or original figures until so instructed.

Submission by e-mail: It is now possible to submit papers by e-mail, subject to certain conditions. Only PDF (preferred) or Postscript files can be accepted, and these must meet certain requirements (see below). Attach the file to a cover e-mail message that has "JPC Paper" as the subject line, provides full contact information, and certifies that the paper has not been submitted or published elsewhere. NOTE: large Postscript files should be submitted as compressed ZIP archives.

Size limit on submitted papers: The nominal length of papers submitted to the Journal of Process Control is 7,500 words plus references. Each normal-sized figure or table contributes about 150 words to the word count. Any submitted paper exceeding the maximum length should be accompanied by a written justification.

Authors in Japan please note: Upon request Elsevier Science K.K. will provide authors with a list of people who can check and improve the English of their paper (before submission). Please contact our Tokyo office: Editorial Service, Elsevier Science K.K., 1-9-15 Higashi Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106, Japan. Tel: +81 3 5561 5032; Fax: +81 3 5561 5045.

Review process: All contributions are read by two or more referees to ensure both accuracy and relevance, and revisions to the script may be required. On acceptance, contributions are subject to editorial amendment to suit house style. When a manuscript is returned for revision prior to final acceptance, the revised version must be submitted as soon as possible after the author's receipt of the referees reports. Revised manuscripts returned after four months will be considered as new submissions subject to full review.

Types of contribution

Contributions falling into the following categories will be considered for publication: Original high-quality research papers, short communications and review and tutorial papers. Journal of Process Control also publishes book reviews, conference reports and a calendar of forthcoming events. Contributions to the calendar should be sent to the Publishing Editor at Elsevier Science.

Manuscript preparation

General: Write in clear and concise English. Spelling should follow the Oxford English Dictionary. Authors whose native tongue is not English are assured that in-house editorial attention to their contributions will improve clarity and acceptability to readers. Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a fax number and an e-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Please number every sheet of paper. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Abstracts: A self-contained abstract of approximately 100 words, outlining in a single paragraph the aims, scope and conclusions of the paper.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, authors, affiliations, abstract, keywords (three keywords for indexing purposes), main text (introduction, method, results, discussion), acknowledgements, appendix, references, figure captions and then tables. Do not import the figures or tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers. Subdivide your paper in the simplest way possible, consistent with clarity.

Units and symbols: All measurements and data should be given in SI units, or if SI units do not exist in an internationally accepted unit. If you use any symbol or unit that may not be generally recognized, please include an explanatory footnote the first time it is used, to help the referees, editors and readers. Abbreviations and acronyms should only be used for unwieldy terms and names that occur frequently in the manuscript. Abbreviations should be used consistently throughout the text and must be clearly defined in full on first use.

Mathematics: Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in an appendix. Equations and formulae should be typewritten. Equations should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-hand side of the page. Abbreviations and acronyms should only be used for unwieldy terms and names that occur frequently in the manuscript.

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line, e.g. Since MacGregor [1], and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper. References should be given in the following forms:

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as Figures and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. Every figure must have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.

Line drawings: Good quality printouts produced in black ink on white paper are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.

Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced, e.g. black and white or colour. If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph; magnification factors should not be used. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.

Colour: Colour reproduction is available if the author is willing to contribute to the extra cost. Please contact the editorial office for details. A letter confirming the author's willingness to accept these costs should be sent with the final manuscript.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption; each table should be typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lower-case letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, e.g. in graphs.

Electronic preparation of manuscripts

Electronic versions of all accepted papers are now required, and an electronic copy of the paper on disk should accompany the final version of the manuscript. The electronic and paper versions must match exactly. Full details on recommended formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com or from Author Services at Elsevier Science.

Authors working in LaTeX: the standard LaTeX "article" style is recommended for the initial submission. Authors must not create their own macros or define new commands. For the final version of an accepted paper, use the special Elsevier preprint style. This style is available - along with full instructions to authors - by anonymous ftp from ftp.elsevier.nl in the directory pub/styles.

NOTE: when submitting a paper for the first time, send the Regional Editor either the paper version (if submitting by ordinary mail) or the PDF or Postscript file (if submitting by e-mail). Do not send document or figure source files on disk. Once a paper has been accepted the Editor will provide instructions on the submission of source files.

See below for detailed guidelines on the preparation of PDF and Postscript files.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the author (the first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, The Boulevard, Langford Lane, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1GB, UK.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints will be sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright

All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" Agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without affecting the authors' proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, and includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures or other material included in the paper for which copyright already exists.

Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.

Technical Information on PDF and Postscript File Formats

Portable Document Format (PDF)

PDF files are preferred for electronic submission to Journal of Process Control. They derive from Postscript (PS) files. PDF files are smaller than PS files, can be viewed on a computer monitor, printed on both PS and non-PS printers, and annotated electronically by editors and reviewers. The preparation of PDF files involves some subtleties. In particular, it is essential that the PDF file contain Type 1 fonts only. To verify this, open the PDF file in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader (the latter is freeware), and select the File/Document Info/Fonts menu. If the resulting list includes Type 3 or TrueType fonts it is unacceptable. See the following guidelines for ways to generate acceptable results.

Generating PDF files

Use Adobe Acrobat Distiller (not the Acrobat Writer). Distiller is packaged with several Adobe products, e.g., Acrobat and FrameMaker. Once Distiller has been installed, configure it to embed all fonts. Also select the proper page and paper size. Then print the document from your word processor, choosing Distiller as the printer; this generates the PDF file.

NOTE: By default, most versions of TeX produce PS files containing fixed-resolution bitmap fonts, which cause Distiller to generate PDF files containing Type 3 fonts. If you are using TeX or LaTeX to prepare your manuscript, please review carefully the information at: http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/SOLUTIONS/543e.htm

Postscript (PS) format

Postscript is a page description language. PS files can be downloaded to PS printers, which are widely used. A disadvantage is that PS files can very large. A typical manuscript with mathematical expressions and a moderate number of line plots may result in a PS file of 0.5-1 MB. A manuscript containing high resolution greyscale or colour bitmap images may easily result in a PS file of 2-20 MB. Although large files can be compressed to reduce transmission time (use the ZIP format only) this does not reduce the printing time (it may take several hours to print such a manuscript). Thus, use of high resolution, colour images is strongly discouraged. Colour line plots are acceptable, although a charge is made for colour reproduction (see above).

Generating Postscript files

Windows computers. First verify that a Postscript printer driver has been installed. If you routinely use a PS printer, this should be the case. If not, your Windows installation CD or diskettes should contain many suitable PS drivers (e.g. the Apple LaserWriter or HP LaserJet 4/4M Plus PS drivers). You may also download the latest general purpose PS printer driver from Adobe, Inc. (free of charge). Follow the instructions to install the PS driver using the Control Panel's Add Printer tool. When you are ready to generate the PS file use the Print dialog in your word processor, designating the PS driver as the printer, and selecting the "print to file" checkbox option.

Macintosh computers. First select a PS printer using the Chooser. The Apple Laser Writer is a good choice, and should be available on your system. (Note: you do not need to be connected to the printer). Then when you print the document, change the "Destination" from "Printer" to "PostScript file" in the Print dialog box.

Unix computers. Since the Unix operating environment provides system-level resources only, high-level tasks, such as generating a PS file, depend entirely on the application software. Thus, no general guidelines can be given here. Since most authors on Unix computers use LaTeX to create their manuscripts, however, the most convenient way is to use the dvips program that comes with LaTeX to create the PS file.

More information on generating PDF and Postscript files is available here, as part of information provided for the IFAC journal Automatica.
