Description

The Journal of Orthopaedic Research provides a forum for rapid publication of high quality manuscripts reporting new information on basic science, bioengineering and clinical aspects of orthopaedic research. Manuscripts reporting new information on the composition, structure, and material properties of tissues important to orthopaedics are appropriate, as are prospective clinical studies in which multidisciplinary approaches are used to provide methods and standards for diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of clinical results.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts. All clinical articles and those dealing with the biological aspects of ortho-paedic research should be sent to: Joseph A. Buckwalter, M.D., Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, 200 Hawkins Dr., Iowa City, Iowa 52242, USA. All multidisciplinary articles reporting the application of engineering methods to orthopaedic research should be sent to: Timothy M. Wright, Ph.D., Department of Biomechanics & Biomaterials, The Hospital for Special Surgery, 535 E. 70th St., New York, New York 10021, USA.

Submission of a manuscript implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Manuscript Preparation. Four copies of each manu-script must be submitted, in English, fully double spaced on one side of white paper with a 12-point font and wide margins. Authors whose 'first' language is not English should arrange for their manuscripts to be written in idiomatic English before submission. The text should also be carefully checked for errors. Manuscripts should not exceed 16 double-spaced, typewritten pages, including the title page, abstract, text, references, acknowledgment, tables, and figure legends, but not including the figures themselves) and with not more than a total of six figures or tables (counting each subfigure as one). Do not import the figures or tables into your text.

Authors must also submit an electronic copy of the final manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and other formats can be obtained from http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/disksub or from Author Services at Elsevier.

The text of the manuscript should be in the following sequence: Summary, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgment, References, tables, and figure legends. Pages should be numbered in succession, the title page being page 1. The title page of each manuscript should include only: the article title; the authors' names and their affiliations; the name, address, telephone and tele-fax numbers, and e-mail address of the person to whom proofs and reprint requests should be addressed; any necessary footnotes to these items; and a running title, not exceeding 45 letters and spaces.

The page following the title page should include a summary of about 200 words describing the purpose, methods, results, and conclusions of the study.

In the acknowledgment, the authors should: (1) identify the sources of all funding for the study; and (2) provide information concerning all of the authors' professional and financial affiliations that may be perceived to have biased the presentation.

Authors should also supply up to five keywords. Keywords may be modified or added by the Editors-in-Chief.

Processing Charge. A nonrefundable $75 submission fee must accompany each submission or the manuscript cannot be processed for review. Payment may be made by check (payable to the Orthopaedic Research Society) drawn on a U.S. bank in U.S. funds or by credit card (Visa or MasterCard). Provide card number, signature, and expiration date.

Human and Animal Research Subjects. Manuscripts that describe experimental work using human or animal subjects must include a statement in the Methods section that approval was obtained from an Institutional Review Board or an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee prior to performing the study. The Journal prefers that authors use line drawings rather than photographs of cadav-eric material or experimental animals. Photographs of human subjects are acceptable if the authors have received appropriate permission for publication of the photographs or taken appropriate measures to disguise the individual's identity.

Details of Style. Acronyms and abbreviations should be avoided and when necessary should be defined the first time they are mentioned. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. For matters of style, follow the Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers (6th edition), published by Cambridge University Press. For reference to the sources of equipment or supplies, use a generic description to refer to the item in the body of the text, followed by the model number, vendor name, city, and state or country, enclosed in parentheses: e.g., electrohydraulic materials test system (model 1331; Instron, Canton, MA, USA). If a trade name is used for a drug, provide the name of the generic along with the manufacturer's information. Abbreviations and units of measurement should all be in SI units.

References. All publications cited in the text should be presented in a double-spaced list of references following the text of the manuscript. The list should be in alphabetical order of first author, with the reference being indicated in the text by numbers. References should take the following form:

[1] Mackay D, Wood L Rangan A. The treatment of isolated ulnar fractures in adults: a systematic review. Injury 2000; 31 565 - 73

[2] Richards RR, Corley FG. Fractures of the Shafts of the Radius and Ulna. In: Rockwood CA Jr, Green DP, Bucholz RW, Heckman JD. Fractures in Adults. 4th ed. Philadelphia: Lippincott 1996

[3] Rockwood CA Jr, Green DP, Bucholz RW, Heckman JD. Fractures in Adults. 4th ed. Philadelphia: Lippincott 1996

The titles of journals should be abbreviated as in Index Medicus. If there are four or fewer authors, they should all be listed; if there are five or more, the first three authors should be listed, followed by et al.

Illustrations. All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as Figure(s)and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are cited. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied double-spaced on a separate sheet.

Line drawings. Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.

Photographs. Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or color). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable. For more information about submitting graphics and artwork please visit the following website: http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/authorartwork.

Color. Color illustrations will be considered if pertinent to the scientific understanding: prices are available on application.

Tables. Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript (e.g. in graphs).

Preparation of supplementary data. Elsevier now accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files offer the author additional possibilities to publish supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips, and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article in Elsevier web products, including ScienceDirect: http://www.sciencedirect.com. In order to ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please ensure that data is provided in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. For more detailed instructions please visit our Author Gateway at http://authors.elsevier.com.

Proofs. Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified on multi-authored papers) by PDF wherever possible and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt, preferably by e-mail. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments made may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are retuned to us in one all-inclusive e-mail or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete. Should you choose to mail your corrections, please return them to: Log-in Department, Elsevier, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon EX1 2AH, UK.

Offprints. Fifty offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Reviewers. Authors should submit the names, addresses, telephone numbers and, whenever possible, telefax numbers of three reviewers who have the necessary expertise to evaluate the submitted manuscript. The editorial offices have the responsibility of assigning reviewers but will take into consideration the individuals named by the authors.

Return of Submitted Materials. The Journal of Orthopaedic Research will keep a copy of all submitted manuscripts, including those that are not accepted for publication. Whenever possible, the Journal will return manuscripts and figures, but the Journal cannot guarantee return of all of the materials. For this reason, the authors should keep at least one complete set of all figures and a copy of the manuscript.

Copyright. All authors must sign the Transfer of Copyright agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier to protect the copyrighted material, on behalf of the Orthopaedic Research Society, for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations. It also includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.

Author Services. For enquiries relating to the submission of articles (including electronic submission where available) please visit the Author Gateway from Elsevier at http://authors.elsevier.com. The Author Gateway also provides the facility to track accepted articles and set up e-mail alerts to inform you when an article's status has changed, as well as detailed artwork guidelines, copyright information, frequently asked questions and more.

Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided after registration of an article for publication.
