About the journal

Purpose and Scope:

One of the premier international publications in the field of offshore and ocean-related engineering, the Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering disseminates the current state-of-the-art and research activities. The Journal covers the current and future technologies of many innovative offshore, arctic, and naval structures. Its peer-reviewed Research Papers cover topics in the general area of offshore mechanics, arctic, and ocean engineering, including: ocean waves and associated statistics; design of offshore structures; fluid-structure interaction; floating production systems; offshore material performance and applications; corrosion protection and control; offshore structures and ships in ice; soil-pipeline interaction; risk analysis; ocean space utilization; ocean energy technology; dynamics of structures; ship motions, risers and moorings and cable dynamics; fatigue and fracture reliability and control; welding and NDT technology; offshore pipelines; offshore safety and reliability; and sub-sea technology.

The Journal emphasizes the fundamental and discussion mechanics of topics, rather than the applications and case histories, even though few of the noteworthy installations are covered from time to time. The Journal also tries to document significant developments in a related field or major accomplishments of a renowned scientist by programming themed issues to record these events.

Instructions to Authors

One purpose of the Society is to disseminate technical information of permanent interest through the publication of a series of Transactions journals.

Papers selected for publication in the ASME Transactions are subject to a voluntary page charge of $75 per journal page, which will be invoiced, through the author, to the author's company, institute, or agency. Publication is not dependent upon payment of the voluntary page charge. As of January 2000, the standard length for an ASME Journal paper is nine (9) printed pages. Should the paper exceed this length, the lead author will be assessed a mandatory excess-page charge of $200 per page for each page over nine pages. This charge will be included, as a separate item, on the same invoice as the voluntary page charge. Payment is mandatory and does not entitle the author to free reprints. Such a paper will not be published until the author agrees to honor the mandatory page charge.

The text of an ASME paper should not exceed nine (9) printed pages in a journal. This corresponds to 42-45 total manuscript pages, typed double-spaced with 10 pt. type, with each figure counting as a page. A Technical Brief should not exceed two and a half journal pages. Discussions should not exceed 500 words, and closures normally should not exceed 250 words per discussion.

Manuscripts should be submitted online for the Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering. Please visit http://journaltool.asme.org for more details. Guidelines for manuscript styling and preparation are provided at the site.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has been neither published nor submitted for publication, in whole or in part, either in a serial, professional journal or as a part in a book which is formally published and made available to the public. ASME meeting preprints and articles included in symposium volumes for symposia (sponsored or co-sponsored by ASME) are not considered as prior publication. The journals do not accept multi-part manuscripts. Each paper should be capable of being reviewed independently of other submissions by the same author(s).

All manuscripts submitted to ASME must use SI (Metric) Units in text, figures, or tables. In addition to SI units, English units may be included parenthetically.

All mathematical expressions should be included in the manuscript. Care should be taken to distinguish between capital and lowercase letters, between zero (0) and the letter (O), between the numerical (1) and the letter (l), etc. Mathematical expressions should fit into a single column when set in type. Equations that might extend beyond the width of one column (fractions that should not be broken or long expressions enclosed in parentheses) should be rephrased to go on two or more lines within column width. Fractional powers are preferred to root signs and should always be used in more elaborate formulas. The solidus (/) should be used instead of the horizontal line for fractions whenever possible. Numbers that identify mathematical expressions should be enclosed in parentheses. Refer to equations in the text as "Eq. (1),' etc., or "Equation (1),' etc., at the beginning of a sentence.

A nomenclature defining symbols should be included, except for brief communications, like Technical Briefs, where symbols are normally identified in the text.

Brief tables may be included in the text of the manuscript, but larger tables (more than six lines) should be created separately and assembled with the figures at the end of the manuscript. A separate list of figure captions should be included in the manuscript. Color graphics are included in the electronic version of the journal at no additional cost to the author; however, for full color in print authors will be assessed the additional charges.

All references should be listed at the end of the text in the order in which they are cited (not alphabetical). References should include date of publication, full title, full name of source, and inclusive page numbers. References should be cited within the text in numerical order according to their order of appearance. The numbered reference citation should be enclosed in brackets, e.g., "It was shown by Prusa [1] that the width of the plume decreases under these conditions." In the case of two citations, the numbers should be separated by a comma [1,2]. In the case of more than two reference citations, the numbers should be separated by a dash [5-7]. Acceptable references include: journal articles, dissertations, published conference proceedings, numbered paper preprints from conferences, books, reports available from the U.S. Government, submitted articles if the journal is identified, and private communications.

If the voluntary page charge has been honored, 100 reprints are provided to the author(s) upon publication of the paper at no additional cost. Reprints may be ordered from the Technical Publishing Department, ATTN: Marisol Andino, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Three Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016-5990. A reprint order form will be sent to the corresponding author after the article is typeset. All orders must be prepaid.
