About the journal

Publishes peer-reviewed papers on the latest advances in both the clinical and laboratory investigation of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury. Through its integration of clinical and laboratory investigation, it focuses on the basic pathobiology of injury to the central nervous system, while considering preclinical and clinical trials targeted at improving both the early management and long-term care and recovery of traumatically injured patients. JOURNAL OF NEUROTRAUMA

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

The JOURNAL OF NEUROTRAUMA publishes papers dealing with all aspects of neurotrauma. This includes the anatomy, biochemistry, biophysics, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology of brain, spinal, and nerve injury. Papers published in this journal emphasize morphological, physiological, and biochemical studies of injured neurons and glial cells, mechanisms and treatments of acute and chronic injury of the nervous system, neural and glial regeneration, transplantation, in vivo and in vitro injury models, cellular growth factors, blood flow, and metabolism of injured nervous tissues, and recovery of function. Both laboratory and clinical studies are encouraged.

The journal will consider original research papers, short communications, reviews, and letters to the editor. All submissions, except letters, must be accompanied by an abstract of about 250 words and keywords (7 or less). Original research papers should have an Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. Short communications should have no sections and be 6 manuscript pages or less, two tables or two figures or one of each. Reviews are usually invited but unsolicited reviews will be considered.

To help defray the cost of printing, the publisher requests that page charges of $45 per printed page be paid by all authors who have funds available from research grants and other sources. It should be noted that ability to pay page charges is not a prerequisite for publication in the Journal.

Submission of Manuscripts: Submissions to the journal will be reviewed by the editorial board. Every effort will be made to ensure a speedy review and a publication time of less than 6 months. Members of the editorial board will formulate a critique of the submitted manuscript. This critique will be sent to the author and, under special circumstances, may be published at the conclusion of the paper if the manuscript is accepted. A submitted manuscript (or any part of its essential substance) must not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere before appearance in this journal (except abstracts in connection with scientific meetings). The journal is not responsible for lost manuscripts.

Submit an original and 3 copies of the manuscript, including text pages, legends, tables, references, and glossy prints of figures to either the Editor-in-Chief, European Editor, or Australasian Editor. John Povlishock, Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief, Department of Anatomy, Journal of Neurotrauma, Medical College of Virginia Campus, 1101 East Marshall Street, Richmond, VA 23219. (804) 828-9535. David I. Graham, M.B., Ph.D., European Editor, Department of Neuropathology, Institute of Neurological Sciences, Southern General Hospital, 1345 Govan Road, Glasgow G51 4TF, Scotland, U.K. 44-141-201-2046. Yoichi Katayama, M.D., Ph.D., Australasian Editor, Department of Neurological Surgery, Nihon University School of Medicine, 30 Oyaguchi-Kamimachi, Itabashiku-Tokyo 173, Japan. 81-3-3972-8111.

To help defray the cost of printing, the publisher requests that page charges of $45 per printed page be paid by all authors who have funds available from research grants and other sources. It should be noted that ability to pay page charges is not a prerequisite for publication in the Journal.

Manuscripts

General Instructions: Type text double-spaced on 8-1/2 x 11 (22 x 28 cm) white bond paper with ample margins on all sides (1-1/2 inches). On the first page, give the full title of the paper, full name(s) and institutional affiliation(s) of author(s) with the highest academic degrees and institutional titles. Provide a running title (<45 characters) and a Table of Contents title (<75 characters), if the full title is longer than these limits. We require the full mailing address and contact information (telephone, fax, and e-mail address) for EACH author listed on your article. Please include the address(es) either on the title page of your paper or on a separate sheet. Please also indicate the corresponding author. On the second page, supply an abstract (<250 words) which presents the reasons for the study, the main findings (with specific data), the principal conclusions, and an alphabetized list of key words (maximum of 7). Original research papers should contain the following sections: introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure legends. One subsection level is allowed. Short communications should contain text without sections, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure legends. Begin each section on a separate page.   Final revisions should be submitted on disk in Microsoft Word.  Manuscripts may be edited for clarity and grammar.

Literature Citations: Literature references in the text should cite author names and publication year, e.g. Young (1982). Use "and" for two authors, "et al." for more than two authors, e.g., (Faden and Holaday, 1979; Hall et al., 1988). Use "in press" for manuscripts accepted for publication, e.g. (Povlishock, in press). Distinguish citations with the same author-year with a letter appended to the year, e.g., Hall (1981 a,b).

Type reference list double spaced with author names in upper case followed by year in parentheses. Page numbers should be inclusive. List citations in alphabetical order by first author. The style of references is that of Index Medicus. List all authors when there are less than seven; otherwise list the first three, comma, then "et al." References to government publications should include the department, bureau, or office, title, location of publisher, publisher, year, pages cited, and publication series, report, or monograph number. Personal communications, unpublished data, and manuscripts "in preparation" or "submitted for publication" may be incorporated into the text, e.g. (Kreutzberg, in preparation) but not in the numbered reference list.

BEARN, A.G. (1972a). Wilson's disease, in: The Metabolic Basis of Inherited Disease. J.B. Stanbury, J.B. Wyngaarden, and D.S. Frederickson (eds), McGraw-Hill: NY, pps. 1033-1050.

LAHITA, R., KLUGER, J., DRAYER, D.E., KOFFLER, D., and REIDENBERG, M.M. (1984). Antibodies to nuclear antigens in patients treated with procainamide. J. Cardiovas. Ultrason. 3, 12-20.

Table and Illustrations: Type tables in double space on a separate sheet, number tables with Arabic numerals, and provide a legend for each table. Tabular data should not be duplicated in figures.

The trim size of the journal is 8-1/2 x 11". For hard copy submission of figures, original glossy photographs for all illustrations must be supplied with the manuscript. (Photocopies cannot be accepted). All illustrations should be numbered and labeled with the first author's name on the back. The top of the illustration should be indicated. A legend should be supplied for each illustration, and all legends numbered consecutively and provided (double spaced) on a separate page. Figures should be numbered in the order cited in the text. A complete set should be submitted with each copy of the manuscript. Images should not show the name of the manufacturer. Please keep in mind that the figures will be reduced, so please do not submit large figures/graphs that contain small type, as the text within the figure will not be readable after reduction. Photomicrographs should be cropped to 8 cm width. Electron photomicrographs should have internal scale markers. If a figure consists of two or more parts, individual parts should have similar dimensions. Color illustrations can be printed in the journal by special arrangement with the publisher. Contact the Editor for further details.

Electronic submission of art is acceptable with the following caveats:

¡¤          Do not include any illustrations as part of your text file.

¡¤          Do not prepare any figures in Word as they are not workable.

¡¤          Line illustrations must be submitted at 1200 DPI.

¡¤          Halftones and color photos should be submitted at a minimum of 300 DPI.

¡¤          Adobe is the preferred software.   Avoid submitting PowerPoint files.

¡¤          Save art as either TIFF or EPS files.   Avoid submitting JPEG files.

¡¤          Color art must be saved as CYMK not RGB.

¡¤           Please provide as laser printout of the art to ensure accuracy.
