The Journal of Nephrology will consider the publication of any original manuscript which deals with either clinical or laboratory investigation of relevance to the broad field of nephrology, dialysis and transplantation. Submission of research manuscripts dealing with diverse topics and problems (Original Investigations) is encouraged. However, comprehensive reviews on relevant topics (Reviews), reports of clinical cases of special interest (Case Reports), and brief reports on the protocols of new ongoing trials (Research Protocols) will also be considered. Finally, the submission of articles on technical or methodological aspects of research (Methods and Procedures), which can be more exhaustively and accurately documented through the multimedia facilities offered by the Jnonline (the WEB edition of the journal), is also encouraged.
Instructions to Authors
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (an original and two photocopies). Three sets of figures and illustrations should be enclosed according to the instructions given below. All material is assumed to be submitted exclusively to the Journal of Nephrology and must not have been previously published except in abstract form. This does not preclude consideration of a manuscript which has been rejected by another journal or of a complete report which follows the publication of preliminary findings elsewhere, usually in the form of an abstract. Manuscripts should be accompanied by a cover letter from the author who will be responsible for the correspondence regarding the manuscript. The cover letter should contain a statement that the manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors. The letter should give any additional information that may be helpful to the Editor.
PREPARATION OF THE MANUSCRIPT Text
The order of the text should be as follows: 1. Title page and Short title page: The complete title should be limited to 85 characters including spaces between words. The title page should be typed on a separate sheet and should include the complete title of the paper; the first name(s), middle initial(s), and surname of author(s); the laboratory or institution of origin, including the city, state and country; and the complete mailing address for page proofs. In the case of multi-authored articles, the page proofs will be sent to only one author (the first author listed unless designated otherwise). In addition, please include the telephone number, fax number, and E-mail address of the designated author. A short title for use as a running head (not to exceed 45 characters in length, including spaces between words) should be typed on a separate sheet.
2. Abstract: An abstract or summary must be submitted on a separate page. It must not exceed 250 words in length, and the complete title of the paper (without the names of authors and institutional affiliation) should be repeated at the beginning of the narrative. For the papers submitted as "Original Investigations," the abstract should consist of four paragraphs, labelled: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. It must be acceptable for use without revision by abstracting journals. Following this, 3 to 10 keywords should be given under the title KEY WORDS. A shorter abstract, summarizing the relevant aspects of the text, is sufficient for the Review Articles and the articles of the category "Methods and Procedures." No abstract is necessary for the "Case Reports."
3. Full text: Starting on a new page, the full text will include the following sections: Introduction; Subjects and Methods; Results; and Discussion. Any statistical methods must be detailed in the Subjects and Methods section. Authors should not use abbreviations in headings, and figure legends should be comprehensible without extensive perusal of the Subjects and Methods section. Authors are advised to refrain from excessive use of uncommon abbreviations, particularly to describe groups of patients or experimental animals.
Acknowledgements Acknowledge only persons who have made substantive contributions to the study. Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission from everyone acknowledged by name because readers may infer their endorsement of the data and conclusions.
References The references should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the text. At the end of the article the full list of references should give the name and max 2 initials of all authors. This will allow Medline-linked references in the JNonline (the WEB edition of the Journal). The authors' names should be followed by the title of the article, the title of the journal in which it appeared abbreviated according to the style of Index Medicus, the year of publication, the volume number, and the first and last page numbers. References to books should give the title of the book, which should be followed by the place of publication, the publisher, the year, and the relevant pages.
Examples: 1. Standard journal article: Border WA, Noble NA, Yamamoto T, Harper JR, Yamaguchi Yu, Pierschbacher MD, Ruoslahti E. Natural inhibitor of transforming growth factor-beta protects against scarring in experimental kidney disease. Nature 1992; 360: 361-4.
2. Chapter in a book: Heptinstall RH. Crescentic glomerulonephritis. In Heptinstall RH Ed. Pathology of the kidney (4th edn). Boston: Little Brown 1992; 627-75.
Tables Type each table on a separate sheet of paper. Please remember to double space. Do not submit tables as photographs. Number tables consecutively using roman numerals and provide a brief title for each table. Place explanatory matter in footnotes, not in headings. Cite each table in the text in consecutive order.
Figures and illustrations In the submission of illustrative material, the authors should be aware of the fact that the accepted articles will be printed not only in the paper edition, but also in the JNonline. Figures (photomicrographs, electromicrographs or radiographs) are limited to no more than 5 per article, and the preferential use of black and white prints (since colour figures would incur a printing charge) applies only to the paper edition. For the paper edition, figures should be professionally drawn and photographed. Three sets of 5x7 inch glossy photographs, clearly labelled on the back, must be submitted. Each figure must be cited in consecutive order within the text.
In the WEB edition of the journal, it is possible to publish an unlimited number of figures, including those in colour, and in association with multimedia tools such as animation, movies, sound, etc.. Each of these figures should be cited in the text, with the label "WEB." Example: "(fig 4, WEB)" means that figure 4 will be restricted to the WEB edition. In the submitted manuscript the figures must be numbered consecutively, independently from their appearance in the text of both editions or in the WEB edition only.
Legends for figures Please double space legends for figures, starting on a separate page with arabic numerals corresponding to all figures (including those for the WEB edition). When symbols, arrows, numbers, or letters are used to identify parts of the figures, identify and explain each one clearly in the legend.
SUBMISSION OF THE MANUSCRIPT
Mail three copies of the manuscript in a heavy paper envelope, enclosing the manuscript copies and figures in cardboard, if necessary, to prevent bending of photographs during mail handling. Place photographs in a separate heavy paper envelope.
Submission of manuscripts by e-mail is encouraged: manuscripts should be prepared with an IBM-compatible word processor. Figures can be submitted as computer files in common graphics programs in TIFF, GIF, BMP or JPEG format. Each individual figure should be clearly labelled with the figure number, software name, and version used. Both manuscripts and figure sets should be submitted as attached files along with the e-mail message by the author responsible for correspondence. As an alternative to e-mail, 3.5" floppy disk (2 copies), 100 MB IOMEGA ZIP diskette or CD-ROM (ISO 9660), containing text and figures, will also be accepted.
Manuscripts should be submitted to:
