About the journal

The journal provides a focal point for ``membranologists' and a vehicle for the dissemination of information dealing with the science and technology of membrane processes and phenomena. The primary emphasis is on the structure and function of non-biological membranes, but papers bridging the gap between non-biological and biological membranes are sought. A broad spectrum of papers is encouraged:

- theory of membrane transport

- experimental data on membrane permeation

- membrane structure

- applications: separations, biomedical, packaging, membrane electrodes, membrane-bound enzymes, and biomembrane analogs.

This is a practical journal. Economic studies of separation processes, for example, are encouraged. Regular papers and Rapid Communications are published. Rapid Communications should preferably not exceed 4-6 printed pages and should be a concise but complete description of an investigation. Rapid Communications will be handled with priority. An important feature of the journal is periodic reviews of important subject areas. Other features include announcements of forthcoming meetings of interest to membranologists, a meetings calendar, and book reviews.

Contact: Please feel free to contact us for any comments, questions or feedback . In addition, we are always interested in any publication proposals for books, electronic products, new journals and co-operation for existing journals. The contact person for the Journal of Membrane Science is Anouschka Zwart, a.zwart@elsevier.com

Instructions to Authors

Submission information

This text is intended to give you some guidelines to help you prepare your manuscript for publication in the Journal of Membrane Science.

1. Scope of the Journal

- Papers dealing with membrane processes and phenomena are published. Non-biological membranes are emphasized, but papers that bridge the gap between synthetic and biomembrane research are sought. A broad spectrum of papers is encouraged: original research dealing with new theories of membrane transport, suitably treated experimental observations of membrane permeation, and applications of membrane transport processes.

- Full-length papers, review articles, Rapid Communications and letters to the editor are accepted. Rapid Communications should preferably not exceed 4-6 printed pages and should be a concise but complete description of an investigation. Rapid Communications will be handled with priority. Only original material is acceptable. Please do not submit material to the Journal if it is also being submitted elsewhere.

2. Preparation of papers

- The language of the Journal is English. For the initial submission of manuscripts for consideration, hard copies are sufficient. Papers should be prepared with one original and three copies. For the processing of accepted papers, electronic versions are preferred (see section 4). After final acceptance, your disk plus one final and exactly matching printed version should be submitted together.

- Please double-space all material. Be concise. Please try to adhere to the following format:

- Title, author(s), address(es). Include mailing or ``ZIP' code in countries using this system. Indicate to whom proofs should be sent and please include the relevant telephone, FAX and e-mail numbers.

- Abstract (100-200 words) and five relevant keywords.

- Introduction. Statement of the problem. Outline of the paper and important findings.

- Theory (if any).

- Experimental (if any).

- Results.

- Conclusions.

- List of Symbols. Please prepare a list if more than about 10 symbols are used. Define all symbols. Include units with the symbols list.

-Acknowledgements (if any).

- References. Number consecutively inside square brackets [ ] with one entry per reference number throughout the text and supply a separate reference list. Abbreviate according to the ``Bibliographic Guide for Editors & Authors', 1974 (Chemical Abstracts Service, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210). Examples:

- Journal: [1] M. Wesseling, U. Werner and S.-T. Hwang, Pervaporation of aromatic C8-isomers, J. Membrane Sci., 57 (1991) 257.

- Book: [2] R.Y.M. Huang, Pervaporation Membrane Separation Processes, Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1990.

- Note that titles of all references articles should be included. Avoid the use of non-retrievable reports.

- Tables. Number consecutively and type on a numbered, separate page. Please use Arabic numerals and supply a heading. Add units to the column headings.

- Figures. Number consecutively with Arabic numerals. Please supply one original suitable for direct reproduction and two additional copies. Number all figures on the front and all photos on the back and add the author's name. Indicate the top of all photographs and figures when there may be doubt. All photographs must be glossy prints. Supply a list of captions on a separate page. Size figures for a two- or three-fold reduction. Colour illustrations can be reproduced at the author's expense.

Nomenclature, symbols and abbreviations

In general, the recommendations of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) should be followed. SI units and units directly related to the SI system (C, bar, h, min, etc.) can be used, but other units should be avoided (e.g. atm, cal, Ci, F, psi, tonne, Torr). Only widely accepted symbols and forms of abbreviation should be used, but always give the full expression followed by the abbreviation the first time it appears in the text. Abbreviations and symbols used in tables and figures should be explained in the legends. The use of chemical symbols in the text should be avoided as much as possible, as they disrupt the flow of the sentence as well as the appearance of the typeset page. Complicated chemical compounds can, for the sake of simplicity, be indicated by their chemical formulae, but at least elements and `every-day' compounds such as water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ethane, ethene, ammonia, formaldehyde, acids, alcohols, etc. should be indicated by their full name (except in long lists). In no case should a combination of symbols and words (e.g. Li-oxide) be used. Hydrogen isotopes should preferably be indicated as 2H or 3H, rather than as D and T. Use of the trivial names `paraffins' and `olefins' should be avoided, `alkanes' and `alkenes' should be used instead. Units Table

4. Compuscripts: manuscripts on computer disk

- All articles may now be submitted on computer disk, with the eventual aim of reducing production times and improving the reliability of proofs still further. Please follow the guidelines below.

- After revision, your disk plus one final, printed and exactly matching version (as a printout) should be submitted together to the editor. It is important that the file on disk to be processed and the printout are identical. Both will then be forwarded by the editor to Elsevier.

- Illustrations should be provided in the usual manner and, if possible, on a separate computer disk as well.

- Please follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of this journal as given in this guide.

- The preferred storage medium is a 5 1/4 or 3 1/2 inch disk in MS-DOS or Macintosh format, although other systems are also welcome.

- Please label the disk with your name, the software and hardware used and the name of the file to be processed.

- For further information on the preparation of compuscripts, please contact: Journal of Membrane Science, Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd, Elsevier House, Brookvale Plaza, East Park, Shannon, Co. Clare, Ireland Phone: (+353)-61-709627; FAX: (+353)-61-709114; E-mail: r.sweeney@elsevier.ie.

5. Copyright regulations

- Upon acceptance of an article by the Journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under international copyright legislation.

6. Proofs and reprints

- The accepted article will be regarded as final and the files will be processed as such. Proofs are for checking typesetting/editing: only printer's errors may be corrected. No changes in, or additions to the edited manuscript will be accepted. Twenty-five reprints of each paper will be supplied free of charge to the author. Additional reprints can be ordered at prices shown on the reprint order form that accompanies the galley proofs
