About the journal
The Journal of Leukocyte Biology will consider for publication manuscripts of original investigations focusing on the origins, developmental biology, biochemistry and functions of granulocytes, lymphocytes, mononuclear phagocytes, and other cells involved in host defense. These reports include full-length papers on original research, rapid communications of new discoveries, letters, commentaries, and invited reviews
Instructions to Authors

Journal of Leukocyte Biology currently allows electronic submission and traditional submission. The electronic submission system became mandatory July 1, 2002. Those not using it will be charged a $50 processing fee. Additionally, manuscripts not submitted via the electronic system will be delayed as they are manually scheduled into the review process.

Types of Papers Accepted

Communications
The journal considers communications dealing with the cell and molecular biology of granulocytes, mononuclear phagocytes, lymphocytes, NK cells, and other cells involved in host defense. Papers covering pathophysiology, cell development, growth and differentiation, extracellular mediators and effector molecules, and receptors, signal transduction, and genes are also considered.

Communications must stand on their own as complete studies, not works in progress. Authors should suggest the names of five potential reviewers when they submit their manuscripts, with street and e-mail addresses, and phone and fax numbers. Authors may appeal decisions concerning their manuscripts to the editor in chief. Authors are expected to make cell lines and products available to qualified investigators.

Full-length manuscripts should be organized according to the following sections:

  1. Abstract-concise summary of paper
  2. Introduction-give reasons for doing the work
  3. Materials and Methods-details of experimental procedure
  4. Results-detailed description of findings
  5. Discussion-relationship of findings to current knowledge
  6. Acknowledgements-credit for contributors
  7. References-literature relevant to work.

Rapid Communications
Rapid Communications are short reports that relate to new and important findings and will be published within 70 days of acceptance. They should consist of an abstract, text without sections, and not exceed eight double-spaced pages of 10-point type including figures, tables, and references. They will be reviewed expeditiously by experts in the field who will either accept (with minor modifications) or reject the manuscript. To expedite the review process, a non-refundable $50.00 handling fee, payable to the Society for Leukocyte Biology, must accompany the rapid communication.

Reviews
The journal publishes full-length review articles and welcomes mini-reviews of no more than eight double-spaced pages with 10-point type including figures, tables, and references.

Letters to the Editor and Commentaries
Letters to the editor and commentaries are welcome and will be published at the discretion of the editor in chief who reserves the right to make minor changes in the text to improve the composition.

Editorial Policy
ALL Manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Leukocyte Biology must be submitted solely to this journal, may not have been published in any part or form in another publications of any type, professional or lay, and become the property of the Society of Leukocyte Biology (SLB). When the manuscript is accepted for publication, the author will be requested to sign an agreement transferring copyright to SLB, which reserves copyright. No material published in the journal may be reproduced or published elsewhere without the written permission of SLB and the author. The journal will not be responsible for the loss of manuscripts. All statements in, or omissions from, published manuscripts are the responsibility of the authors, who will assist the copy editors by reviewing proofs before publications. One copy of a manuscript will be returned on request.

Electronic Submission
The journal's manuscript electronic submission facilitates and accelerates the review process, allows you to check the status as your article passes through peer review, eliminates costly mailing fees, allows for more well-defined figures, affords online correspondence with the editor and editorial office, and is completely secure.

Throughout the system, red arrows reflect pending action items that you should address. If you ever need additional help, click on the help signs spread throughout the system. A help dialog will pop up with context-sensitive help.

Online Review Process
The manuscript submission and peer-review process goes through the usual steps, except that everything is conducted online.

Manuscript Submission
The following information must accompany a submitted manuscript:

  1. Corresponding Author, including first and last name, postal address, work telephone numbers, and e-mail address
  2. Title and Running Title (you can copy and paste this from your manuscript)
  3. Abstract (you can copy and paste this from your manuscript)
  4. Manuscript files (see Technical Requirements for file preparation guidelines and restrictions).
  5. Figure files (see Technical Requirements for file preparation guidelines and restrictions). Figures files MUST BE LABELED ON THE TITLE LINE AS FIGURE 1, 2, ETC in order for the figures to be published in the proper order. For easy uploading and review, figures/images embedded in the manuscript file are recommended.
  6. Cover letter that includes contact information (e-mail address and institution) of suggested peer reviewers.

The manuscript submission process is broken into a series of 4 screens, which gather detailed information about your manuscript and allow you to upload the pertinent files. The sequence of screens is as follows:

  1. A long form asking for author, title, abstract, and file quantities.
  2. A screen asking for the actual file locations (via an open file dialog). After completing this screen, your files will be uploaded to our server.
  3. A completion screen that provides a specific manuscript number for your manuscript.
  4. An approval screen that will allow you to verify your manuscript was uploaded and converted correctly.

After the manuscript is submitted, you will be taken to a page on which you will be able to review your converted manuscript. If the conversion is not correct, you can replace or delete your manuscript files as necessary. After you have reviewed the converted files, click on "Approve Manuscript." This link will have a red arrow next to it.

Manuscript Status
After you approve your manuscript, you can get the status of its status in one of three ways:

  1. Log onto the system with your password.
  2. Click on the link represented by your manuscript tracking number and abbreviated title.
  3. Click on the "Check Status" link at the bottom of the displayed page.

This procedure will display detailed tracking information about where your manuscript is in the submission/peer-review process.

Ready to Submit Once you have gathered all the required manuscript information described above, go to www.jlb-submit.org and follow the prompts.

Traditional Submission
The electronic submission system will become mandatory by July 1, 2002, and those not using it will be charged a $50 processing fee. Additionally, manuscripts not submitted via the electronic system will be delayed as they are manually scheduled into the review process.

Send manuscript to:

Dr. Joost J. Oppenheim
Editor in Chief
Journal of Leukocyte Biology
#289
103 Baughman's Lane
Frederick, MD 21702, USA
E-mail: jlb@journalstaff.com

Hard Copy
Manuscripts should be double-spaced on one side of good-quality white paper 8-1/2" X 11" with 1" margins. Send four copies of the original manuscript and four original sets of high-quality, black and white or color figures.

Disk
Because the journal has an online review process, all papers must be submitted on disk. Along with four hard copies of the manuscript, submit the final version on a disk in a PC-based format, preferably in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. Disks should be high-density (1.44 MB), 100 MB zip, 250 MB zip, or CD-ROM. Each disk or CD should include separate files for the cover letter, the manuscript, and each figure/table. See Technical Requirements for file preparation instructions.

Send only the final version of your manuscript. Authors will be charged if proof changes are caused by submitting the wrong version. Open additional files for tables and complex mathematical equations and identify that file name on the disk label. Print your name, manuscript number, date, and file(s) name on the diskette label.

Technical Requirements

Cover Letter
Suggest 3-5 reviewers and 3-5 key words that do not appear in the title. File format can either be Word, WordPerfect, or Rich Text Format (RTF). We can access PDF, EPS, LaTex, Text, and Postscript files, but using these will significantly delay the review process. EXAMPLES of file names: baker_cover_letter.wpf; etc., where "baker" is the corresponding author's last name. Note the use of underscores between words.

Manuscript
Use the same file format as for the manuscript in (1) above. Using other formats will cause a significant delay in reviewing the manuscript. EXAMPLE of files names: baker_ms.doc; baker_ms.wpf, etc.

Using standard fonts, Times New Roman or Times Roman font for letters and numbers and Symbol font for special characters, will reduce introduction of errors in file conversion and editing process. Set paper size to letter 8 ? by 11.

Page 1 should contain the title (numerals are not accepted in titles of papers in a series); author(s); and affiliation(s). A short running title, not to exceed 50 spaces, should appear at the bottom of the page. In addition, include the name, street address (no box numbers), telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the person to whom proofs are to be sent. A list of three to six key words that do not appear in the title should be provided for indexing purposes.

Page 2 should contain an abstract not exceeding 250 words.

Use footnotes only when absolutely necessary. If used, they should be typed consecutively, double-spaced, on a separate sheet of paper in the order of their appearance in the text. In all instances, Arabic numerals should appear as superscripts for footnotes.

Generally accepted abbreviations should be used whenever possible. No sentence should begin with an abbreviation or Arabic numeral. Follow Council of Biology Editors' (1994) Scientific Style and Format (sixth edition): Press Syndicate of the University of Cambridge, UK.

Figures/Tables/Graphs
Each figure/image should be in a separate file. Acceptable file formats are tif, gif, jpg, pdf, Postscript, and EPS. EXAMPLE of file names: baker_fig 1.tif; baker_fig 2.jpg; baker_fig 3.eps.

Keep the figure file as small (72 dpi) as possible in order to convey the desired information. Higher resolution files or glossy hardcopy prints will be requested when your manuscript has been accepted.

Original figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals and treated consecutively in the text. Photographs should be submitted as glossy black and white or color prints. Authors are expected to pay the net cost of publishing color figure, which is $450 for the first printed page of color and $300 for each additional page.

Legends to figures should be typed on a separate page.

Number tables consecutively with Arabic numerals in the order of their appearance in the text. Tables must be typed double-spaced on separate pages and have a short descriptive title must be provided. Footnotes should be labeled with lowercase superscript letters.

Graphs may be submitted in the form of computer-generated laser printed figures or as glossy prints in black and white. Label all figures with first author's name, figure number, and an arrow indicating top.

Original figures/tables/graphs will be returned only on request.

References
Reference citations should appear in numerical order in parentheses throughout the text. The reference list should be typed double-spaced on a new page at the end of the text, and references should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are cited. List all authors and inclusive pages. Unpublished experiments, personal communications, or papers submitted for publication should not be included in the reference list but should appear parenthetically in the text as "unpublished results." Written approval by the person(s) cited in personal communications must accompany the manuscript. Papers accepted but not yet published may appear in the reference list with the name of the journal followed by the words "In press." Four copies of each reference in press must be submitted with the manuscript. Abbreviations of journals should conform to those used in Index Medicus, National Library of Medicine. The following style should be used:

Journal Articles: First author's last name, initials, second author's last name, initials, etc. (Year) Title of article, Name of journal. Volume, inclusive pages. [Example: Kashara, K., Strieter, R.M., Chensue, S.W. (1991) Mononuclear cell adherence induces neutrophil chemotactic factor/interleukin-8 gene expression. J. Leukoc. Biol. 50, 287-295.]

Books: Authors' names as above. (Year) Title of Book, Publisher, City, State. Inclusive pages cited. [Example: Darnell, J., Lodish, H., Baltimore, D. (1990) Molecular Cell Biology, Scientific American Books, New York 261-313.]
