About the journal

The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, the official publication of the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation, brings readers essential clinical information about the rapidly evolving field of intrathoracic transplantation, support, and replacement. Peer-reviewed articles cover topics that include: assist devices and artificial hearts; diagnosis and treatment of complications; immunosuppressive therapies; new techniques in noninvasive diagnosis of rejection; outcome analyses; preoperative and postoperative evaluation; socioeconomic and ethical aspects of transplantation. The journal's scope also addresses all aspects of advanced diseases of native thoracic organs, and includes articles with new insights into the immunology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of heart failure and advanced lung disease. In addition, the journal has expanded its coverage in the rapidly maturing field of nontransplantation cardiac surgery for advanced cardiac disease.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript submissions. The original manuscript (see section on Preparation of Manuscript) should be sent to James K. Kirklin, MD, 739 Zeigler Research Building, 703 South 19th Street, Birmingham, AL 35294-0007, USA

Editorial policies. The Journal publishes proceedings of the annual scientific sessions of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and will consider for publication suitable articles on all topics relevant to intrathoracic transplantation, support, and/or replacement. Articles are accepted for publication on the condition that they are original, are not under consideration by another journal, or have not been previously published. Manuscripts for publication, letters to the Editor, and other communications should be addressed to James K. Kirklin, MD, at the address given above. Statements and opinions expressed in the articles and communications herein are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the Editor(s) or publisher, and the Editor(s) and publisher disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. Neither the Editor(s) nor the publisher guarantees, warrants, or endorses any product or service advertised in this publication. Neither do they guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer of such product or service.

Copyright statement. In accordance with the Copyright Act of 1976, which became effective on January 1, 1978, all manuscripts must be accompanied by the following statement signed by the principal author: "The undersigned author transfers all copyright ownership of the manuscript (title of article) to the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation in the event the work is published. The undersigned author warrants that the article is original, does not infringe upon any copyright or other proprietary right of any third party, is not under consideration by another journal, and has not been previously published. I sign for and accept responsibility for this material on behalf of any and all co-authors."

Authorship. All persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the content.

Informed consent. Reports describing data obtained from research conducted in human subjects must contain a statement in the Methods section indicating approval by the institutional review board and affirming that informed consent was obtained from each patient.

Humane animal care. All papers reporting experiments using animals must include a statement in the Methods section giving assurance that all animals received humane care in compliance with the "Principles of Laboratory Animal Care" formulated by the National Society for Medical Research and the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" prepared by the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources and published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH Publication No. 86-23, revised 1985).

Permissions. Direct quotations, tables, or illustrations that have appeared in copyrighted material must be accompanied by written permission for their use from the copyright owner and original author along with complete information as to source. Photographs of identifiable persons must be accompanied by signed releases showing informed consent.

Preparation of Manuscript. Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced on good-quality white paper, with liberal margins on all four sides. The title page should include the authors' full names, degrees, and hospital and academic affiliations; and, for the corresponding author, his/her mailing address, business and home telephone numbers, fax number and e-mail address. References, figure legends, tables, and appendixes should follow, in that order. A structured abstract, 250 words or less, is to be provided on a separate page. This abstract should be divided into four sections: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Begin each section with its respective heading and include information relevant to that section. Abbreviations should always be defined at first appearance in the text, tables, and figure legends. No abbreviations should be used in the title or abstract. Generic names of all drugs should be used.

Three options are available for the format of manuscript submission:

  • Two paper copies and one on diskette.
  • E-mail with manuscipt as an attachment.
  • Five paper copies (least desirable).
Please note that all diskette and electronic submissions must be in a format compatible with Windows 98 or higher.

Brief communications and commentaries. Brief communications and commentaries will be considered for publication. They should present new ideas, techniques, or findings of special significance or be original elements in a debated question. The entire double-spaced, typewritten manuscript, including tables, figures, and references should be five to seven pages, and the abstract should be no more than four sentences.

Letters to the Editor. A covering letter should be submitted explaining any circumstances relevant to the "Letter to the Editor." The letter should be titled, double-spaced, and submitted in triplicate.

The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation encourages the submission of substantive "Letters to the Editor." Such communications are retained and indexed in the Cumulated Index Medicus; they are not sent out for editorial review but are directly accepted or rejected by the Editor, and the process leading to publication is greatly accelerated. Authors are urged to submit brief "Letters to the Editor" containing substantive information concerning experimental or clinical studies, accompanied by a brief bibliography (no more than five) and one or two tables and/or figures.

References. Manuscripts in preparation, personal communications, and other unpublished information should not be cited in the reference list but may be mentioned in the text in parentheses, with a note of approval from the source for the statement appended to the manuscript. References citing on-line sources should also include the published, printed source, if available. The references must be identified in the text by superscript Arabic numerals and numbered in consecutive order as they are mentioned in the text. The reference list should be typed double-spaced at the end of the article in numeric sequence. The format should conform to that set forth in "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (Ann Intern Med 1997;126:36-47). Journal names should be abbreviated following the style in the Cumulated Index Medicus.

Examples (list all authors when six or fewer; when seven or more, list first three and add et al.):

Format for journal articles:
Salvatierra O, Vincenti F, Armend W, et al. Four-year experience with donor-specific blood tranfusions. Transplant Proc 1983:15:924-6.

Format for books:
Eisen HN. Immunology: an introduction to molecular and cellular principles of the immune response. 5th ed. New York: Harper & Row; 1974. p. 406.

Format for chapters:
Fromer PL. Workshop on congestive heart failure. In: Braun-wald E, Mock MB, editors. Congestive heart failure. New York: Grune & Stratton; 1982. p. 1-2.

Illustrations. Illustrations (four sets of glossy prints) should be numbered in order of their mention in the text and marked lightly on the back with the author's last name and an arrow to indicate the top edge. Drawings or graphs should be prepared in black India ink or typographic (press-apply) lettering. Typewritten or freehand lettering is unacceptable. All lettering must be done professionally and should be in proportion to the drawing, graph, or photograph. Letter-quality, computer-generated illustrations are acceptable. Do not send original artwork, x-ray films, or ECG strips. Glossy print photographs, 3 X 4 inches (minimum) to 5 X 7 inches (maximum), with good black-and-white contrast or color balance are preferred. Special arrangements must be made with the publisher at (800) 325-4177, ext. 4317, or (314) 453-4317, for color plates or numerous illustrations. Consistency in size of illustrations within the article is strongly preferred. Any special instructions regarding sizing should be clearly noted. Illustrations will not be returned unless specifically requested by the author.

Figure legends. The legends should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet of paper and numbered to correspond with the figure. If an illustration has been previously published, the legend must give full credit to the original source.

Tables. Tables should be self-explanatory and should supplement, not duplicate, the text. The tables should be typed double-spaced throughout, including column heads, data, and footnotes. Each table must be submitted on a separate sheet of paper. A concise title describing the table's content should be supplied with each table. All columns must carry concise headings describing the data in the column. Type all footnotes immediately below the table, and define abbreviations. If a table has been previously published, a footnote to the table must give full credit to the original source.

Units of measurements. Measurements of length, height, weight, and volume should be reported in metric units (meter, kilogram, liter) or their decimal multiples. Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. Blood pressure should be given in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). All hematologic and clinical chemistry measurements should be reported in the metric system in terms of the International System of Units (SI). Rejection grading must conform to ISHLT guidelines, printed in the November/December 1990 issue of the Journal.

Appendixes. The appendixes should be prepared in the same manner as the tables.

Reprints. Single reprints may be obtained from the author. Reprint order forms will be sent to authors as articles are published. Reprints in quantity must be purchased from Commercial Reprint Sales, Attn: Anne Rosenthal, Elsevier Science Inc., 655 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10010.
