About the journal

The Journal of Family Practice is committed to:

  1. Meeting the information needs of family physicians.
  2. Publication of evidence-based secondary work that translates the results of the most relevant, valid research into a form most useful for practicing family physicians.
  3. Exploration of electronic publication as a means to enhance and supplement dissemination of original research and evidence-based information to family physicians and family medicine researchers.

The Journal of Family Practice is a peer-reviewed scientific journal specifically intended to meet the needs of the specialty of family medicine. JFP is delivered to 86,000 family physicians, general practitioners, and osteopaths in primary care practice each month. In addition, JFP has the highest impact factor of any family practice journal, ranking 12th out of over 100 general medicine journals.

Highest priority is given to studies that address clinical questions or health care delivery topics in primary care. Since our audience consists of both primary care clinicians and researchers, it is important that original research be relevant and useful to the physician in fulltime clinical practice. Studies that speak to a relatively small group of researchers may be recommended for electronic publication (see below for details). Manuscripts will be considered only if they have not been published by another journal. The remainder of this page describes the manuscript categories, divided into "Putting Research Into Practice", and "Departments." Specific details about formatting your manuscript that apply to every category can be found under "Formatting and Submitting Your Manuscript."

Instructions to Authors

Formatting and Submitting Your Manuscript

Manuscript Style and Format

Manuscripts should conform to the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts (www.icmje.org/index.html) Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (N Engl J Med 1997; 336:309-15). For questions about style, consult the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors. 9th ed. Baltimore, Md.: Williams & Wilkins, 1998. Keep abbreviations and acronyms to a minimum and spell out on first reference, e.g., American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Regarding medications, generic drug names should generally be used. When proprietary brands are used in research, include the brand name in parentheses in the Methods section.

The title page should include from top to bottom: article title; name, degree, and institutional affiliation of each author; previous presentation of the work, if any; name, address/fax/E-mail of the author to whom reprint requests should be addressed; and manuscript word count, excluding tables, figures, and abstract. Pages should be numbered consecutively in the upper right corner beginning with the title page.

Please see the Applied Evidence, POEMs, and Clinical Inquiries sections above for detailed information on how to format articles for those features. Unsolicited manuscripts are not considered for POEMs or Clinical Inquiries.

Key Points for Clinicians:
Please provide 2 to 4 brief, bulleted "take-home" points for each article. These points will be printed in a box to help reinforce the article's key message for physicians.

Acknowledgments:
This section is optional and may be used to acknowledge substantial contributions to the research or preparation of the manuscript made by persons other than the authors.

Conflict of Interest:
Each article should have a statement acknowledging any potential conflict of interest. If there is none, please state "No conflict of interest."

References:
Cite references in numerical order in the text. In the Reference section, references must be typed double-spaced and numbered consecutively in the order in which they are cited, not alphabetically. The style for references should follow the format set forth in "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals." Abbreviations for journal titles should follow Index Medicus. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of all references. Personal communications and unpublished data should not be referenced. If essential, such material should be incorporated in the appropriate place in the text.

Stange KC, Ja¨¦n CR, Flocke SA, Miller WL, Crabtree BF, Zyzanski SJ. The value of a family physician. J Fam Pract 1998; 46:363-8.
  • Book:

Tables: Tables should be self-explanatory, clearly organized, and supplemental to the text of the manuscript. Each table should include a title, be typed on a separate page, and be numbered in order of its appearance as called out in the text. Articles should have no more than 5 tables or figures.

Figures: Submit original and 3 copies of figures, such as line drawings, glossy photographs, and graphs. Symbols, lettering, and numbering should be clear and large enough to remain legible after the figure has been reduced. If photographs of patients are used, either the subject should not be identifiable or use of the picture should be authorized by an enclosed written permission from the subject.

Permissions: Contributors to JFP should obtain permission from the author and publisher for the use of quotes, illustrations, tables, and other materials taken from previously published works not in the public domain. The letters of permission should accompany the manuscript. The original source should be mentioned in the figure legend or table footnote.

Manuscript Submission

We strongly prefer electronic submission of manuscripts.

Please submit the manuscript and tables as a rich text format (RTF) file attached to an e-mail message. The message can include your cover letter in the body of the e-mail message, or as a separate RTF attachment. The message should be sent to jfp@fammed.uc.edu. We will confirm successful receipt of your manuscript by e-mail, or ask for the file in a different format or on paper (original plus 3 copies) if unsuccessful. To save a file in RTF format in most word processors, select "Save as" from the "File" menu, and change the "File type" or "Save as type" to rich text format.

If you must send a paper manuscript, an original 3 copies should be sent to Jeff Susman, MD, The Journal of Family Practice, Room 141, Health Professions Building, Department of Family Medicine, University of Cincinnati, Eden and Bethesda Avenues; Cincinnati, OH 45267; tel: 513-558-4021, fax: 513-558-3030; e-mail: jfp@fammed.uc.edu. Please include a copy of the manuscript on floppy diskette or CD-ROM with the printed manuscript.

Cover Letter: The cover letter should include the name, address, telephone numbers, and e-mail address of the corresponding author. The letter should make it clear that the manuscript is not under consideration by another journal, and that the final manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors.

Conflict of Interest: The authors should describe in the cover letter any affiliations or financial arrangements with any company whose product appears prominently in the manuscript or with any company making a competing product. Such information will be kept in confidence while the paper is under review and will not influence the editorial decision. If the article is accepted for publication, the editor will discuss with the authors the manner in which this information will be communicated to the reader.

Copyright Transfer: Immediately following submission of a manuscript accepted for review, the corresponding author will receive from the JFP office a notification of receipt that will include the assigned manuscript identification number and a copyright transfer form. The copyright form must be signed by each of the authors and returned to the JFP office prior to review of the manuscript.
