Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts should be sent to Dr. S. Shimada, Editor, The Journal of Dermatology, Taisei-Bldg., 14-10 Hongo 3-chome, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0033, Japan, and are subject to the approval of the editorial board. Authors are requested to follow the instructions listed below and are advised to consult the current number of the Journal before preparing a manuscript.
A copyright status form signed by all authors must accompany each manuscript.
Articles should be written in English, French, or German. Papers which will be simultaneously or have been published in any other periodical will not be accepted. The length of each paper should generally not exceed ten printed pages, including tables and figures. Double-spaced typewritten manuscripts, including all photographs, drawings, and tables, should be submitted in triplicate, on one side only of international sized paper. Xerox copies are preferable to typewriter carbons.
It is helpful if the author supplies a short title for use as a running head. This should be typed on a separate sheet with the complete title of the article and be the first page of the manuscript. Type the authors' names and degrees, the department of origin, and the address for request of reprints on the second sheet. The first section of the text is requested to be a 200 to 300 word Abstract and a list of up to 5 key words.
Photographs should be arranged to fit the printed page. Number each lightly with pencil on the back and indicate top. The authors' names should be marked on the top corner of original tables, drawings, and graphs and on the back of photographs. Legends should not be attached to or written on the illustration copy. Positions for tables and figures in the text may be indicated in the margin of the text page. Anything to be set in a type size different from that of the main text should be typed on a separate sheet. This includes tabular matter, case history, materials and methods, acknowledgments, references, and legends for illustrations.
References should be numbered in the text in the order of citation, and the bibliography should be prepared in this same order. References from journals should include authors (list all authors when six or less; when seven or more, list only first three and add et al.), title, name of journal (abbreviate journals according to listing in Index Medicus), volume, inclusive page numbers, and year. Example: Bystryn JC, Naughton GK: The significance of vitiligo antibodies, J Dermatol, 12: 1-9, 1985. Those from books should include authors, title, all editors, publisher and city, year and inclusive page numbers. Example: Zaias N, Barden HP: Disorders of nails, in Fitzpatrick TB, Arndt KA, Clark WH Jr, Eisen AZ, Van Scott EJ, Vaughan JH (eds): Dermatology in General Medicine, McGraw-Hill, New York, 1971, p.350.
Each complete or partial page of print and/or black and white figures is charged to Japanese authors at ?,000; there is no charge for foreign authors. In principle, all the color pages should be charged to all of the authors, however if the editorial board judges it appropriate the cost of color pages could be approximately half discount. Fifty reprint copies will be supplied to the author free of charge and additional copies (in units of 50) may be purchased.
