Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be written in English and should be submitted in quadruplicate (one original and three photocopies), including four sets of good-quality figures, to:

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science
Editorial Office
525 B Street, Suite 1900
San Diego, CA 92101-4495, USA
Telephone: (619) 699-6554
Fax: (619) 699-6855
E-mail: jcis@elsevier.com

There are no submission fees or page charges. Each manuscript should be accompanied by a letter outlining the basic findings of the paper and their significance.

The Editors invite authors to suggest the names of up to four referees to review a submission.

Electronic Submission
Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk, e-mail, or FTP (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc), each time a new version is submitted. Submission as an e-mail attachment is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes (jcis@elsevier.com). Manuscripts prepared using TeX or LaTeX are welcome; however, LaTeX(2e) is preferred. Authors are strongly encouraged to use the LaTeX template available at http://www.authors.elsevier.com/latex for manuscript preparation. Note that the use of other specialized versions of TeX or extensive use of custom macros may necessitate conventional typesetting from the hard-copy manuscript. Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic file must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.

Original contributions only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, see http://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided after acceptance.

If material from other copyrighted works is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com.

Timeline for Revision of Manuscripts
The Journal of Colloid and Interface Science endeavors to publish current scientific research findings in a timely manner. Accordingly, articles returned to the author(s) for revision and not promptly returned in a suitably revised form will be relegated to inactive status after 3 months and will be automatically withdrawn from consideration after 6 months.

Preparation of Manuscript

Manuscripts should be typewritten with double spacing on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch or A4 white paper.

Abbreviations should follow the usage established by Chemical Abstracts.

The length of Letters to the Editors and Notes is restricted to 2000 words or less and three figures and/or tables or less. Reference lists should be kept as short as possible. An Abstract must be included in each article, note, and letter to the editor. Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:

The Title Page (p. 1) should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers).

The Abstract (p.2) must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main finding of the paper in 50 to 200 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.

The Introduction should be as concise as possible, without subheadings.

Materials and methods should be sufficiently detailed to enable the experiments to be reproduced. In the Methods section, authors should draw attention to any particular chemical or biological hazards that may be involved in carrying out the experiments described. Any relevant safety precautions should be described; if an accepted code of practice has been followed, a reference to the relevant standards should be given.

Results and Discussion may be combined and may be organized into subheadings.

A Summary should be included.

Acknowledgments should be brief and should precede the references.

References should be cited in the text by an Arabic numeral in square brackets and listed numerically typed double-spaced on a separate sheet at the end of the paper. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the latest Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index. Only articles that have been published or are in press should be included in the references. Unpublished results or personal communications should be cited as such in the text. In the reference list, the styling, punctuation, and capitalization should conform to the following:

Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, and indicate the top and the authors on the back of each figure. Figure legends should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. All illustrations should be in finished form suitable for reproduction. They should be planned to fit the proportion of the printed page. Lettering on drawings should be of professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and should be large enough (10-12 points) to take a reduction of 50-60%. Please visit our Web site at http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork.

Illustrations in color can be accepted only if the authors defray the cost.

Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in the order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate sheet with a short descriptive title typed directly above and with essential footnotes below. Authors may submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.

Equations should be cited as Eq. [1] or simply [1] (an Arabic numeral in square brackets). Equation numbers should be typed on the right-hand margin opposite the equation.

Preparation of Supplementary Material

Elsevier now accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files offer additional possibilities for publishing supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips, and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article in Elsevier Web products, including ScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com). To ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please provide the data in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. Please note, however, that supplementary material will not appear in the printed journal. Files can be stored on 3?-inch diskette, ZIP disk, or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh). For more detailed instructions, please visit our Author Gateway at http://authors.elsevier.com, click on "Artwork instructions," and then click on "Multimedia files."

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and proofs should be returned promptly. Authors will be charged for alterations that exceed 10% of the total cost of composition.

Annual Index

Decennial Index
A Decennial Index (1958-1967) was published in Vol. 32, No. 4, April 1970, pp. 662-682.
