About the journal

 Journal of Clinical Nursing is an international forum for exchanging high quality information between nurses, midwives, health visitors and public health nurses. Up-to-date practice needs to be based on critical analysis of the way we work in all areas of nursing practice and research. Sharing knowledge and experience across a wide variety of cultures and healthcare systems will help us to deliver high-quality care.

We publish articles reporting:

  • evaluations of evidence-based care and practice developments;
  • research relevant to practice;
  • literature reviews using rigorous methods of generating evidence and presenting their findings.

We aim to promote understanding of sound research methods among practitioners and help authors to develop their writing skills. Articles focusing on practice in nursing are welcomed from all health care disciplines.

Instructions to Authors

The Editor welcomes scholarly papers, including original research papers and literature reviews, on all aspects of clinical nursing, midwifery and health visiting including policy, management, education and research related to practice. All manuscripts are double blind refereed. Submission should be exclusively to the Journal of Clinical Nursing and authors will be expected to conform to the normal ethical aspects of investigation and copyright.  Accepted papers will become the copyright of the journal.

Authors should provide both electronic (disk or e-mail attachment) and hard copies of the submitted and final accepted manuscript.

The Editor will decide on the time of publication and retain the right to modify the style of a contribution; major changes will be agreed with the author(s) before production of proofs.

Books for review should be sent to Kate Wilson, 3 Royal Avenue, Chorlton, Manchester M21 9EU.  Email: Drkmwilson@c-c-h.fsnet.co.uk

Manuscripts should be sent to JCN Editorial Office, Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 9600 Garsington Road, Oxford OX4 2DQ, UK.

Three copies of the manuscript, tables

Three copies of the manuscript, tables and figures should be submitted. Papers should be between 3000 and 5000 words in length, typed on one side only of A4 paper or international equivalent using double spacing and a wide margin (at least 2 cm) on each side of the text. The numbers of words used, excluding abstract, references, tables and figures, should be specified. Details of sources of research funding, other support, and acknowledgements should be included.  Contributors to the manuscript should be indicated, by initials, at the end indicating who undertook study design, data collection and analysis and manuscript preparation

The top sheet should display the manuscript title, authors' names, professional and academic qualifications, positions and places of work and the address to which all correspondence and proofs should be addressed. Email addresses should also be given wherever possible and fax and telephone numbers should include international dialling codes.

Figures, illustrations, legends, tables, references and acknowledgements should be prepared on separate sheets.

Approval for reproduction/modification of any material (including figures and tables) published elsewhere should be obtained from authors/copyright holders before submission of the manuscript. Contributors are responsible for any copyright fee involved.

The text for original research articles should be preceded by a structured abstract not exceeding 300 words using the following headings, where possible: Background, stating what is already known about the topic; Aims and Objectives; Design; Methods; Results; Conclusions, stating what this study adds to the topic; Relevance to Clinical Practice.  The abstract should accurately reflect the content of the paper. The abstract should not include references or abbreviations.

The abstract should be followed by up to 6 keywords which accurately identify the paper's subject, purpose and focus.

Critical reviews of literature on any area of research relevant to clinical nursing and midwifery are welcomed. Submissions should not exceed 5000 words and should be structured as: Introduction; Aims; Objectives and Methods; Results; Discussion; Conclusion.  The methods should describe the search strategy in terms of databases, search terms and data parameters.  Inclusion and exclusion criteria for papers should be clearly described and the conclusions should make the relevance to clinical practice clear.  A structured abstract, not exceeding 300 words, should be provided under the headings: Background stating what is already known about this topic; Aims and Objectives; Conclusions stating what this study adds to the topic; Relevance to Clinical Practice.

The Research in Brief section is intended for short reports. These should include the aims and objectives of the work reported, methods used, findings, and implications for practice, management, education and further research (where appropriate). Research in Brief submissions should be approximately 500 words in length, with a clear but concise title and three to four subheadings. A maximum of three references may be included. One line drawing and one table may be included.

Clinical Notes: These should be brief descriptions, commentaries or reflections on nursing practice. Submissions should be approximately 500 words in length, with a clear descriptive title. A maximum of three references may be included and a figure or table is acceptable only if essential to understanding the clinical note.

Headings within the text should conform to the following convention: upper case for main headings, lower case for major sub-headings, italics for subsidiary sub-headings.

Spelling should conform with that used in The Concise Oxford Dictionary and abbreviations with those in Units, Symbols and Abbreviations (1994) published by the Royal Society of Medicine Press, 1 Wimpole Street, London W1M 8AE.

Abbreviations should be used sparingly and only if a lengthy name or expression is repeated throughout the manuscript. When used, the abbreviated name or expression should be cited in full at first usage, followed by the accepted abbreviation in parentheses.

Quotations included appropriately within the body of the text should be marked by single inverted commas. Longer, or self-contained quotations should be preceded and followed by a double space; neither single inverted commas nor italics should then be used.

Statistical methods used should be defined and, where appropriate, supported by references.

Footnotes are discouraged.

References

All work referred to in the manuscript should be fully cited. References within the text should cite the authors' names followed by the date of publication, in date order, e.g. (Lewis, 1975; Barnett, 1992; Chalmers, 1994). Where there are three or more authors, the first author's name followed by et al. will suffice, e.g. (Barder et al., 1994), but all authors should be cited in the reference list. Page numbers should be given in the text for all quotations, e.g. (Chalmers 1994 p. 7). All references should be cited from primary sources.

When a paper is cited, the reference list should include authors' surnames and initials, date of publication, title of paper, name of journal in full (not abbreviated), volume number, and first and last page numbers. Example: Watson R., Hoogbruin A.L., Rumeu C., Beunza M., Barbarin B., MacDonald J. & McReady T. (2003) Differences and similarities in the perception of caring between Spanish and United Kingdom nurses. Journal of Clinical Nursing 12, 85-92.

When a book is cited, the title should be stated, followed by the publisher and town, county/state (and country if necessary) of publication. Example: Smith G.D. & Watson R. (2003) Gastroenterology for Nurses. Blackwell Science, Oxford.

Where the reference relates to a chapter in an edited book, details of author and editors should be given as well as publisher, place of publication, and first and last page numbers. Example: Chalmers K.I. (1994) Searching for health needs: the work of health visiting. In Research and its Application (Smith J.P. ed.), Blackwell Science, Oxford, pp.143-165. The edition (where appropriate) of all books should be identified, e.g. 2nd edn.

References stated as being 'in press' must have been accepted for publication and a letter of proof from the relevant journal must accompany the final accepted manuscript.

The reference list should be prepared on a separate sheet and be in alphabetical order and chronological order by first authors' surnames.
