Instructions to Authors
Scope
The Journal is devoted to the publication of original manuscripts, i.e., those that have not been published previously, except in abstract form, on experimental, theoretical, and clinical aspects of brain circulation and metabolism. These types of papers are considered for publication: (a) full papers written in the style outlined below, (b) short communications, reporting concise pieces of work that lead to positive conclusions, should not normally exceed 1500 words and should contain no more than 2 figures, and (c) rapid communications (see below for details).

Rapid Communications

(a) Rapid Communications are concise papers that present innovative ideas and data of particular originality and timeliness. The criteria for acceptance of Rapid Communications are more stringent than for full papers. Decisions as to acceptability will be made within 3 weeks of receipt, and papers requiring substantive revision will be excluded from the Rapid Communication track. Papers will be published within 3-4 months of acceptance (depending upon the phase of the publication cycle).

(b) Rapid Communications must not exceed 5 printed pages (total of 14 double-spaced manuscript pages of approximately 6,500 characters/page, including references, tables, and illustrations).

(c) Manuscripts should be submitted in quadruplicate. A cover letter, explaining why the paper warrants particular consideration for rapid publication, should be included.

(d) The manuscript should adhere to the conventional form and include an abstract, introduction, methods, results, and discussion. The results and discussion may be combined if appropriate.

(e) Manuscripts submitted as Rapid Communications will receive an initial in-house editorial screening to determine their potential suitability for this format and will not receive rapid review unless deemed to be sufficiently innovative, original, and timely. Manuscripts that are too long will be returned to the authors without review.

Full papers and Short Communications

(a) Submit manuscript (in triplicate, plus a disk) typewritten with double spacing throughout and with margins at least 2.5 cm wide. (In the event of the rejection of a paper, wherever possible all sets of figures will be returned to the authors, however, this cannot be guaranteed in every case. As the Journal is becoming increasingly electronic, not all copies of manuscripts and figures are returned by referees to the Editorial Office after review.)

(b) Each manuscript must have a title page which includes only the title, authors' names, laboratory of origin, name, address, and telephone number of the person to whom proofs and reprint requests should be addressed, and any necessary footnotes. Indicate specific affiliations of each author. Information concerning sources of financial support should be placed in an Acknowledgment section, between Discussion and References.

(c) The page following the title page should include a brief abstract of up to 200 words (100 for short communications), up to six key words or terms, and a running title not exceeding 45 letters and spaces.

(d) Papers should be organised in the standard fashion, i.e., introduction giving the reasons for the investigation, methods, results, and discussion. Headings of sections may be omitted in short communications.

(e) Data should be presented as clearly defined mean values. Standard deviation should be used as the measure of dispersion throughout the manuscript, tables, and figure error bars. Standard error of the mean should not be used. Appropriate indications of statistical significance of differences from control values should be given. The number of individual values represented by a mean should be indicated.

(f) In mathematical copy, be precise about alignment of numerals, letters, and symbols; hand-letter any that cannot be type-written. Make a circled notation in the nearest margin to identify any possibly ambiguous character such as 1 (one or el), 0 (zero or oh), X (multiplication sign or ex), Greek letters, script letters, diacritical marks, prime signs, and certain letters (e.g., C, K, P) in which capitals and lowercase are nearly indistinguishable when hand-written. Use the simplest form of equation that can be made by ordinary mathematical calculation.

(g) Simple chemical compounds should be named in the text of the methods and results sections by formulae when these can be printed in single horizontal lines of type.

(h) Isotopic specifications should conform to the IUPAC system (Biochem J (1978), 169:1-27). Full details of specific activities of isotopes used should be given. Results should be expressed in absolute terms, e.g., Ci, dps, dpm.

(i) For tracer kinetic terminology, please use guidelines as de- scribed in Brownell et al. (1968), "Nomenclature for tracer kinetics," Int J Appl Radiat Isot 19:249-262.

(j) Drug names should be the official or approved names; trade names or common names may be given in parentheses where the drug is first mentioned.

Tables and Figures

(a) Tables and figures should be so constructed that they, together with their captions and legends, will be intelligible with minimal reference to the text.

(b) Each table should be on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.

(c) Each figure must be accompanied by an explanatory legend typewritten with double spacing. Do not use a separate sheet for each legend. Explain all symbols used in the figure.

(d) The units of measure must be indicated clearly in the column headings of a table or the co-ordinates of a figure. If the unit of measure is the same for all the data in a table, it may be given in the table fide or in a footnote to be printed immediately below the table.

(e) Line drawings should be submitted as at least two sets of clear laser or glossy prints, with lettering of high standard and large enough to be legible when reduced. Halftone photographs should be submitted in triplicate in the form of original photographic prints; photocopies are often inadequate for proper editorial evaluation and cause delay in editorial handling. An overlay should be provided showing which area of the photograph requires greatest definition, and scale bars should be provided on the photograph.

The maximum final size of any figure in the printed journal will be 17 by 23 cm (7 by 9½ inches). On the back of each figure give the figure number and authors' names, and indicate the top of the figure with an arrow. Colour illustrations will be charged to the author; the cost will be given upon request.

(f) Symbols on graphs, etc., should be inserted by the author using the following standard characters:

¡ð ¡ñ open triangle #9650; ¡õ ?#160;+

(g) Figures must be planned so as to avoid wasted "white" space. Co-ordinates should not extend appreciably beyond the curves. It is not necessary for the scale on a co-ordinate to start at 0.

References

(a) Reference format: Cite references in text by names of authors and year of publication; for papers written by three or more authors use "et al". At the end of the paper list references (typewritten with double spacing) in numerical order, except for papers by three or more authors, which should be grouped in chronological order after any other papers by the first author. Opening and closing page numbers, full titles of papers, and names of all co-authors must be given. Journal titles should be abbreviated in accordance with Index Medicus (Superintendent of Documents, U.SS. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402, U.S.A., DHEW Publication No. 83-267).

Revision

(a) Only the electronic version of a manuscript will ordinarily be returned for revision if a disk is supplied.

(b) Review of revised papers by editors and referees will be facilitated if a summary of the revisions is supplied in a letter with suitable references to the suggestions of editors and referees. The originals of any modified or rewritten pages should be included with submission of a revised manuscript.

(c) If a manuscript is resubmitted more than 2 months after it was returned for revision, it will be deemed to be a new paper. Both the old and new dates of receipt will be published in the Journal, if the paper is then accepted.

Proofs and Reprints. To assure prompt publication, proofs should be mailed back to the Publisher not more than 5 working days after receipt. Corrections should be restricted to printer's errors and completion of "in press" references. Substantial alterations may be charged to the author. Reprints of each paper can be obtained at reasonable cost by returning the reprint form with the proofs. Proofs should be mailed to Production Editor, Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 530 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106, U.S.A.

Copyright. Copyright for articles published in Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism will be held by The International Society for Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism. In view of the present U.S. copyright law, effective January 1, 1978, it is necessary that a statement be signed by the author of a submitted manuscript, expressly transferring copyright to the Society in the event the paper is published in the Journal. A copyright transfer form will be sent to the senior author when receipt of manuscript is acknowledged by the Editor-in-Chief. It is implicit that by signing the copyright transfer form that all authors have made significant contributions to the investigation and attest to its veracity. Potential financial interests must be disclosed to the Editor-in-Chief at submission. Authors must disclose commercial considerations, such as an equity interest, financial support of the study, or consultancy, which relate to the material in the manuscript. This information will be acknowledged at publication in a format mutually acceptable to both the Editor-in-Chief and the responsible author. Individuals whose support is noted in the acknowledgments should provide written consent to the responsible author.

Publication Charges. The International Society for Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism has directed that original submissions accepted for publication in Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism be subject to page charges. The rates are as follows: ISCBFM members: $15 per page; nonmembers: $45 per page. Authors should complete the form sent with the proof package. The member rate applies if any co-author is a member in good standing at the time of publication. Inability to pay will not prohibit publication. Instructions for Electronic Manuscript Submission

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins positively encourages submission of electronic versions of manuscripts in conjunction with the traditional paper version. The preferred storage medium is a 3½ inch disk in an MS-DOS compatible format. Files in a MacIntosh-compatible format will also be accepted.

The preferred format is WordPerfect. Files will also be accepted in one 6f the following standard word processing formats: Microsoft Word, WordStar, of XYWrite. While we can convert from other word processing formats, the vagaries of the conversion process may introduce errors. Do not submit ASCII text files. Each submitted disk must be clearly labelled with the name of the author, item title, journal title, type of equiment used to generate the disk, word processing program (including version number), and file names used.

The file submitted on disk must be the final corrected version of the manuscript and must agree with the final accepted version of the paper manuscript. The disk submitted should contain only the final version of the submitted paper manuscript. Delete all other material from the disk.

Please follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style as given in "Instructions to Authors."

Note, however, that while the paper version of the manuscript must be presented in the traditional double-spaced format, the electronic version will be typeset and should not contain any extraneous formatting instructions. For example:

Use hard carriage returns only at the end of paragraphs and display lines (e.g., titles, subheadings)
Do not use an extra hard return between paragraphs
Do not use tabs or extra space at the start of a paragraph or for list entries
Do not indent run-over lines in references
Turn off line spacing
Turn off hyphenation and justification
Do not specify page breaks, page numbers, or headers
Do not specify typeface
Care should be taken to correctly enter "one" (1) and lower case "el" (l), as well as "zero" (0) and capital "oh" (O).

Please observe the following conventions concerning dashes: Use a single hyphen with space before it for a minus sign, use a double hyphen (with space before and after) to indicate a "long dash" in text, and a triple hyphen (with no extra space) to indicate a range of numbers (e.g. "23---45").

Illustrations and tables will be handled conventionally. However, figure and table legends should be included at the end of the electronic file.

Non-standard characters (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should be coded consistently throughout the text. Please make a list of such characters and provide a listing of the codes used.
