There are no submission fees or page charges. Each manuscript should be accompanied by a letter addressed to the specific editor, which outlines the basic findings of the paper and their significance. If the manuscript refers to recently submitted manuscripts or papers in press (with the Journal of Catalysis or other journals), then two copies of each manuscript must be supplied so that the reviewers can judge the new manuscript in its proper context.

Revised manuscripts should be returned with one copy marked to show where changes have been made. Additional materials may be requested at the discretion of the Editor.

Electronic Submission
Authors are required to transmit source files for the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via computer disk, e-mail, or FTP (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc), each time a new version is submitted (please label files with manuscript/production number). In addition, each version of the manuscript should be compiled into a single .pdf file, which should accompany the source files. Submission packages will be considered incomplete unless accompanied by the proper files and will be returned to the author until the necessary materials can be provided. Submission as an e-mail attachment is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes (jcat@elsevier.com in the US, jcatal@harcourt.com in the UK). Manuscripts prepared using TeX or LaTeX are welcome. Authors are strongly encouraged to use the LaTeX template available at http://www.authors.elsevier.com/latex for manuscript preparation. Note that the use of other specialized versions of TeX or extensive use of custom macros may necessitate conventional typesetting from the hard-copy manuscript. Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic files must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.

Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that no substantial portion of the study has been published or is under consideration for publication elsewhere and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in the Journal of Catalysis represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher. Manuscripts that do not meet the general criteria or standards for publication in the Journal of Catalysis will be immediately returned to the authors, without detailed review.

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, see http://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided after acceptance.

If material from other copyrighted works is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com.

Types of Papers

Research Notes, Letters to the Editor, and Priority Communications should have a maximum of 14 double-spaced typewritten manuscript pages (including tables and figures). Accepted Research Notes will not receive publication priority over regular articles. All Research Notes should include an abstract of 60?100 words.

Letters to the Editor will be considered for priority publication under the following conditions: (a) Letters must be related to some statement made in a recently published article in this Journal; (b) in cases of conflicting views on any topic, no more than one Letter from each author will be accepted.

The Editors will evaluate the suitability of an article for consideration as a Priority Communication according to the following criteria: (a) The article contains unique, exciting, and obviously novel results with a clear requirement for rapid publication; (b) articles may be of preliminary nature, but experimental details of the preparation and conditions must be fully documented such that the experiment can be repeated. Priority Communications should include an abstract of 60 to 100 words; Introduction, Methods, and Results and Discussion sections; a maximum of 3 figures and/or tables in total; and a References section with only the most essential references included. Manuscripts submitted for publication as Priority Communications must be accompanied by a letter explaining why the material deserves rapid publication. Manuscripts accepted as Priority Communications will be printed as quickly after acceptance as possible. Manuscripts that are judged not to warrant priority publication may be considered for publication as Research Notes.

Preparation of Manuscript

Manuscripts should be concise and consistent in style, spelling, and use of abbreviations, as in the Journal of Catalysis. All materials should be typed double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch or A4 white paper.

Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:

The Title Page (p. 1) should contain the article title, authors' names (without degrees) and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the name and complete mailing address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers).

The Abstract (p. 2) must be a short but comprehensive paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in less than 150 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.

The Introduction should be as concise as possible, without subheadings.

Experimentals and methods should be sufficiently detailed to enable the experiments to be reproduced. Authors should draw attention to any particular chemical or biological hazards that may be involved in carrying out the experiments described. Any relevant safety precautions should be described; if an accepted code of practice has been followed, a reference to the relevant standards should be given.

Results and Discussion may be combined and may be organized into subheadings.

Acknowledgments should be brief and should precede the references.

References to the literature should be cited in the text by Arabic numerals in square brackets, set on the text line, and listed numerically at the end of the paper. Abbreviations of journal titles should follow the style used in the latest Chemical Abstracts' Service Source Index. Only articles that have been published or are in press should be included in the references and the name of the journal should be included. Unpublished results or personal communications should be cited as such in the text. Please note the following examples.

Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Indicate the top of the figure and the authors' names on the back of each figure. Each figure should have a descriptive legend. Legends should be typed double-spaced together on a separate page. Lettering on drawings should be professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and must be large enough (10-12 points) to withstand appropriate reduction for publication (up to 50-60%). Copies of drawings are not acceptable unless they are high-contrast glossy prints. All but the very simplest structures and structural formulas must be designed for direct reproduction. Please visit our Web site at http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork. Color Figures can be accepted only if the authors defray the cost.

Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title typed directly above and with essential footnotes below. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.

Chemical Reaction Data

For heterogeneous catalysis, presentation should include reaction rates normalized by catalyst surface area, surface area of the active phase, or number of active surface atoms or catalytic sites, as appropriate. Typical rate units are mol s-1 m-2 or, in the case of surface atom normalization to produce turnover frequencies, s-1. For homogeneous catalysis, rates should typically be reported as turnover frequencies. Comparisons of selectivities should be made at similar conversions.

Proofs
Proofs of regular articles and Research Notes will be sent to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and proofs should be returned promptly. Authors will be charged for alterations that exceed 10% of the total cost of composition.
