About the journal

The subjects of biogeography, ecology and biodiversity are now of truly global importance. Recognising this increased significance, the scope of the Journal of Biogeography and its sister publications, Global Ecology and Biogeography and Diversity and Distributions, continue to be developed under the guidance of Dr Robert Whittaker and Dr David Richardson respectively, acting as a team with Professor Philip Stott, the Editor of Journal of Biogeography. Diversity and Distributions, new in 1998, is taking the lead in the increasingly important field of invasion biology.

It is the aim of the Editorial team to develop the range of coverage of all three journals - from enhanced global warming to the distribution of gadoid fishes, from invertebrate diversity in tropical rain forests to individualist species responses - so that all the key biogeographical and ecological questions of the day may be addressed. Topics will include what is naturalness?, debates on both philosophy and methods, the implications of ecosystem fragmentation, the impact of human-induced changes, as well as the ecological and economic significance of biodiversity. All systematic groups will continue to be embraced, from theory to practice, from plants to animals.

Instructions for Authors
Papers dealing with all aspects of spatial, ecological and historical biogeography are considered for publication in the Journal of Biogeography. This journal has two sister publications: Global Ecology and Biogeography: A Journal of Macroecology (edited by Robert J. Whittaker), and Diversity and Distributions (edited by Dave Richardson). The editors reserve the right to decide to transfer material between the journals where this is deemed most suitable. Accepted papers become the copyright of the Journal.

The Journal of Biogeography encourages online submission of manuscripts at http://jbi.manuscriptcentral.com. Submission online is an intuitive, step-by-step process. By submitting online, you will benefit from quicker peer-review, web-based manuscript tracking, online reviewing and faster response. You will need your manuscript and figures in a digital format. When submitting, authors can either upload separate text and figure files or a single text file with embedded figures. A PDF file will then automatically be created for reviewing purposes. Full instructions and support for authors can be found at the Site. To use the Site you will need a user ID and password. Go to the Journal’s submission homepage (http://jbi.manuscriptcentral.com) and click ‘Create a new account?if you have not registered before, or click ‘Check for existing account?if you have submitted online or reviewed online before for the Journal (or if you have forgotten your details).

The Copyright Agreement Form and the Colour Work Agreement Form (also available from the Editorial Office and the manuscript submission Web Site) must be completed by the corresponding author and sent to the Editorial Office at the time of submission (the last only if colour artwork is submitted). Authors are required to assign copyright of their paper to Blackwell Publishing. Copyright assignment is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been assigned. Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement. Note that no editorial decision can be made until the necessary paperwork has been received. It is the policy of the Journal for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork (see below for as summary of costs). Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to have completed and returned a Colour Work Agreement Form. If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Editorial Assistant (address below). Any article received by Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been received. Return forms to the Editorial Assistant, Journal of Biogeography, Blackwell Publishing, 9600 Garsington Road, Oxford 0X4 2DQ, UK; fax +44 1865 471248; e-mail jbi@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com.

Authors who cannot submit their manuscript at the Journal’s submission web site should send an electronic version on a 3.5" disk, zip disk or CD ROM containing both text and tables (and figures if possible) along with two hardcopies of the manuscript to the Editorial Assistant (see address above). Please do not duplicate your submission by submitting online and by post, and note that handling of manuscripts submitted online will be quicker. Papers (manuscript, figures, etc.) will not be returned to authors, and authors should therefore keep copies for revision.

Poorly presented manuscripts that do not conform to the following instructions will be returned without consideration for publication.

Manuscripts
Manuscripts should bear the title of the contribution, name(s) of the author(s) and complete address of the place where the work was carried out. The full postal and e-mail address of the author who will receive correspondence and check the proofs should also be included, as well as the present address of any author if different from the place where the work was carried out. A short Biosketch (30?00 words; 150 for three authors or more) describing the research interests of the authors should be provided. A brief informative Abstract of up to 500 words, presented for standard papers as a series of factual statements under the headings Aim, Location, Methods, Results and Main Conclusions (as appropriate), should be provided after the title page, along with a list of up to 10 Keywords. Authors may also provide a second Abstract and set of Keywords in another language, such as Spanish, where this is of particular regional significance. These should appear after the English Abstract and Keywords and must be a direct translation of the English version. Manuscripts are preferably written in English; where this is not the author’s first language they should be carefully checked by an English speaker before submission. Contributions in French, German or Spanish will be considered; such papers should include an additional Abstract of 300?00 words in English, along with Keywords likewise in English. All pages should be numbered in the top right hand corner. A short running title should be provided. There is a range of three different headings and authors should indicate the level of each heading by formatting them as bold-capital, bold-lowercase or italics-lowercase for main, second and third level heading, respectively (or labelling them (A), (B) and (C) if this is not possible). The correct nomenclatural authorities for all the taxa must be given on their first appearance in the text, in the Abstract, in Tables and in the legends to Figures. Where specific equipment or software is mentioned, please give the manufacturer/company’s name, town and country.

Abbreviations and units
SI units (m, km^2, kg, etc.) are preferred. Statistics and measurements should always be given in figures, i.e. 10 km, except where the number begins the paragraph. When the number does not refer to a unit of measurement, it is spelt out (e.g. three samples), except where the number is greater than or equal to 10 (e.g. 25 samples). Use: negative exponents (e.g. t year^?, not t/year); L for litres; 24 hour clock format; and format dates as 31 March 1999. The word ‘Figure?should be abbreviated in the text, e.g. Fig. 1, Figs 2 and 3.

Tables and figures
Tables should be cited consecutively in the text and included at the end of the paper; they should be constructed using ‘tabs?(not spaces or software options). Table column headings should be brief, with units of measurement in parentheses. All illustrations (including photographs) are classified as figures and should be numbered consecutively. Figure legends should be inserted at the end of the paper, as should the figures themselves if they are embedded within the paper. Figure legends should make the material completely understandable. If the position of a table or figure is not to be near its first mention in the text, indicate its preferred position within the paper. Please ensure that figures are prepared such that, after reduction, all lettering and symbols will be clear and easily read. Photographic figures should be saved in bmp or tif format at 300 d.p.i. Line figures should be saved in encapsulated postscript (eps) format. If this is not possible they should be saved in bmp or tif format at 800 d.p.i., as should combination figures. Colour figures should be saved in CYMK rather than RGB. Label multi-panel figures (a), (b), (c), etc., preferably in the upper left corner, and refer to them in the text as, for example, Fig. 1(a). Bar scales for maps and photographs are preferred to numerical scales and must be given on all such items. Full artwork guidelines are given on the publisher’s web site (http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp). The journal welcomes colour figures. A Colour Work Agreement Form must be completed by authors submitting colour artwork and returned to The Production Editor, Journal of Biogeography, Blackwell Publishing, 9600 Garsington Road, Oxford, OX4 2DQ, UK.  If you are unable to download the form please contact the Editorial Office. The charge for colour printing is ?50 for the 1st figure, ?75 each for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th figures, and ?00 each for all additional figures. Full details are given on the form. Under exceptional circumstances, authors may request these charges to be waived. This must be done, in writing, at the time of submission of the manuscript, and authors must justify to the Editor that inclusion of the figure(s) in colour is essential for interpretation of the results presented. If authors wish to apply for funds to cover the costs of colour printing, the Editor will provide relevant support letters to funding bodies, indicating acceptance of the paper. Authors are encouraged to submit potential cover illustrations. These should be scanned to be 300 d.p.i. when enlarged/reduced to reproduction size (typically 11 x 16 cm). If photo or slides are submitted, these should be copies rather than originals.

Postal submission of artwork: If online submission of artwork is not possible, always submit high-quality hardcopy figures by post. If there are originals lightly mark them as such on the reverse; all figures should likewise be marked with their author name(s) and manuscript number, when known. Good quality prints of photographs should be sent without lettering unless this can be done to a professional standard; any required lettering should be given on an accompanying photocopy.

References
References should be made by giving the author’s name with the year of publication in parentheses. When reference is made to a work by more than two authors, the first name and et al. should be used. If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, the letters a, b, c, etc., should be put after the year of publication. References should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper in the following standard form:

Cox, C. B. & Moore, P. D. (1999) Biogeography: an ecological and evolutionary approach, 6th edn. Blackwell Science Ltd, Oxford.
May, R. M. (1994) The effects of spatial scale on ecological questions and answers. Large-scale ecology and conservation biology (ed. by P. J. Edwards, R. M. May and N. R. Webb), pp. 1?7. Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford.
Watt, A. S. (1947) Pattern and process in the plant community. Journal of Ecology, 35, 1?2.

All author names of multi-authored works should be given. Abbreviate editor to ed., editors to eds and edition to edn. Page extents of single-volume works are not required. Titles of journals should be given in full. Unpublished data, works in preparation and papers submitted but not yet accepted may be cited, giving the author’s initials and surname, but should not be included in the reference list.

Appendices and Supplementary Material
Appendices may be provided for important primary data, which needs to be included in the paper. If, however, these data are very extensive, or if they are of only indirect relevance to the paper, they will normally be made available in an electronic form through the Journal’s pages on the world wide web. Such supplementary material should be referred to in the text as, for example, "see Appendix S1 in Supplementary Material". Authors should then include a ‘Supplementary Material?section immediately before their References section, which should be in the following form:

     Supplementary material

The following material is available from
     http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/products/journals/suppmat/JBI/JBI***/JBI***sm.htm

Appendix S1  Short title of supplementary appendix 1
Appendix S2  Short title of supplementary appendix 2

Where *** refers to the article code that will be added by the publisher. Only short titles to appendices should be given in this section; full titles can be given with the supplementary material itself. Supplementary files are hosted by the Publisher in the format supplied by the author and are not copy-edited by the Publisher. It is the responsibility of the author to supply supplementary material in an appropriate file format and to ensure that it is accurate and correct. Prior to publication, authors will be sent the URL of their Supplementary Material for them to check linking and content. Extensive editing of material is not possible at this stage and the onus is on the author to ensure that material is sent in a correct form at the time of submission. Note: if authors supply links to their own web sites, Blackwell Publishing is not responsible for the material on these sites.

Proofs
PDF proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail and they should be returned to the Production Editor within 3 days of receipt. Major alterations to the text and illustrations are only accepted when absolutely necessary; the additional costs may be charged to the author.

Offprints
Fifty offprints of each paper are supplied free and sent to the corresponding author unless otherwise specified. Additional copies may be purchased and should be ordered when proofs are returned. Offprints are sent out about 3 weeks after publication.
