Submissions concerning Controversies in Assisted Reproduction are also primarily published by invitation. For proposals only, please contact the Editor-in-Chief:
  2. The journal publishes information covering assisted reproductive technologies and early genetics in the human and animal experience. Preference is given to reports of newly evolving technologies in assisted reproduction. Specifically, although not exclusively, the journal's scope covers the following: clinical assisted reproduction, experimental assisted reproduction, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, animal experimentation in assisted reproduction, general infertility, andrology, reproductive immunology, reproductive genetics, recurrent pregnancy loss, obstetrics, medical complications in pregnancy, reproductive microbiology, and cloning. The journal publishes full-length original research papers, short communications, case reports, and editorials. In addition, the journal covers clinical female and male fertility on a physiological as well as therapeutic level.
  3. Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Plenum Publishing Corporation will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible. Also, submission of a manuscript will automatically represent that the authors have appropriate authorization from laboratory directors, department chairs, and/or grantees if such authorization is required.
  4. Submit an original and two copies of the manuscript and three sets of original figures. The manuscript must be typed double-spaced on one side only of 8 ??11 inch paper with 1 ?inch margins all around. If possible, please indicate total number of words and lines. Number each page top right (title page is 1).

Do not submit manuscripts by fax. If necessary, fax the covering letter, and state the manuscript is being sent via air mail, express mail, etc.

The covering letter should clearly identify the person (with address, fax, and telephone numbers) responsible for correspondence.

All instructions outlined here apply to revised manuscripts as well.

While in the submission process, please use the assigned reference number when corresponding. Failure to do so may delay processing.
  5. Order the elements comprising the manuscript as follows: title page, capsule, structured abstract, key words, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusions, appendix, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure-caption list. Laboratory data should include basic serum chemistries, urinalysis, and any other laboratory findings pertinent to the case. These may be presented in a cursive manner or in a table, as you deem appropriate. Please include the name and location of companies from which materials were obtained. Abbreviations used in presenting laboratory data should conform to the style used in the New England Journal of Medicine, and, for all but routine chemistries, normal values should be indicated in parentheses, with a footnote indicating when a normal value first appears.
  6. The title page (page 1) should include the title of the article, authors' names (with degrees) and affiliation, complete mailing address, fax, and telephone numbers of one author who will review the proofs, and suggested running head. The affiliation should comprise the department, institution, city, and state (or nation) from which the work originated, and should be typed as a footnote to the author's name. An affiliation should be indicated for all authors. The running head should be less than 40 characters (including spaces) and should indicate either diagnosis or major features of the case.
  7. The capsule should be page 2 of the manuscript. It is to appear with the title in the table of contents. This brief, concise condensation of the manuscript should be limited to a single sentence of no more than 25 words describing the essential point(s) made by the manuscript. (Not required for Reproductive Health Care Policies Around the World or Controversies in Assisted Reproduction.)
  8. The abstract should be page 3 of the manuscript. It should be structured and consist of no more than 150 words, organized into four paragraphs labeled Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Please abide strictly by this limitation in length. Do not use abbreviations, footnotes, or references in the abstract.
  9. A list of 4? key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes, both internal and external. They should be arranged in alphabetical order and separated by a semicolon.
  10. All acknowledgments (including those for grant and financial support) should be typed in one separate paragraph that directly precedes the references section. Written approval from each individual mentioned in the acknowledgments (and/or the approval of an authorized person representing the institution) is required. This written approval should clearly state that the individual(s) and/or institution(s) agree to be named in the acknowledgments section of the paper.
  11. References should be typed double-spaced in a separate section at the end of the paper and numbered consecutively in the order in which they are cited in the text. Published articles and those in press (state the journal which has accepted them and enclose a copy of the manuscript) may be included. Cite in the text by the appropriate Arabic numeral enclosed in parentheses. Include the last names and initials of all authors, title of article, name of publication, year published, volume number, and inclusive pages. Abbreviations should conform to those in Index Medicus. The style and punctuation of the references should conform to the following examples:

    Journal Article:
    1. Glass RH, Ericsson RJ: Intrauterine insemination of isolated motile sperm. Fertil Steril 1978;29:535-539

    Book:
    2. Leigh H, Reiser MF: The Patient. New York, Plenum Medical, 1980

    Contribution to a Book:
    3. Shapiro BM: Awakening of the invertebrate egg at fertilization. In Fertilization and Embryonic Development in Vitro, L Mastroianni, Jr., JD Biggers (eds), New York, Plenum Press, 1981, pp 233-255
  12. Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals), and each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Tables should be self-explanatory and include a brief descripive title. Footnotes to tables, indicated by lower case letters, are acceptable but they should not include extensive experimental detail.
  13. Illustrations/figures are to be numbered in a consecutive series of Arabic numerals in the order in which they are cited in the text. Three sets of unmounted photographs, drawings, diagrams, and/or charts are to be submitted each in a separate labeled envelope. Write the title of the paper, the name of the first author, and set number (set 1 of 3, etc.) on each envelope. Write the title of the paper, the name of the first author, and the figure number on an adhesive label which should be pasted on the back of each figure. Indicate clearly the top of each figure. Photographs should be large, glossy prints, showing high contrast, and should be of the best possible quality. Drawings should be prepared with india ink. Either the original drawings or good-quality photographic prints that are sharp and clear are acceptable. Illustrations in full color are accepted for publication if the editors believe that color will add significantly to the published manuscript. The cost of color illustrations will be charged to the author. Once the paper has been accepted, firm quotes will be supplied by the publisher and the author will have the opportunity to approve costs prior to printing. Color transparencies or prints must be submitted for an evaluation. Captions for figures should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet of paper. Captions should not duplicate information given in text.
  14. A conflict of interest statement is to be included in the author's cover letter. This statement is either to indicate no conflict of interest for any of the submitting authors in reference to the submitted material or to describe in detail what conflict of interest exists. A conflict of interest is any situation in which an author or any closely related individuals would economically benefit from publication of the manuscript. The presence of a conflict of interest does not necessarily prevent publication of the manuscript, but may result in publication of the conflict as a footnote. Lack of notification about a conflict may prohibit the involved authors from further submissions to the journal. A list of two to four potential reviewers including their mailing addresses and telephone and fax numbers should also be included in the author's cover letter.
  15. The journal requires that investigations performed in the United States on human subjects have the prior approval of the appropriate institutional committee on human experimentation.
  16. Studies of assisted reproductive technologies which report "success rates" must report as one outcome parameter either number of clinical pregnancies and/or number of live births. These statistics should be reported per 100 oocyte retrieval cycles.
  17. Rapid Publication: Concise manuscripts (4 or fewer journal pages) representing studies of outstanding scientific significance may be submitted for Rapid Publication. These manuscripts must be completely documented by reference to the literature and by a thorough description of the experimental procedures. If authors desire Rapid Publication, they must state so explicitly in their covering letter.

    Guidelines for Rapid Publication:
    1. Each line of type should contain no more than 60 pica or 72 elite characters, including spaces and punctuation. Each page should be double-spaced and contain no more than a total of 25 lines.
    2. The total manuscript should be limited to 480 lines, including blank and partial lines, estimates for tables and figures, and references. Count two blank lines before and one after each heading.
    3. Estimate each table figure to be 40 lines of type. To shorten the length of the manuscript, it is recommended, where possible, to incorporate information into the text rather than present it in table or figure form.
    4. All rules regarding publication of a manuscript under the standard procedure apply to Rapid Publications as well.
A 20-page, double-spaced manuscript, counting figures and tables as half-pages, should fit within the acceptable limits for Rapid Publication.

If a manuscript is rejected during Rapid Publication, or is judged inappropriate for this process, the manuscript may be submitted for publication under the standard publication process. In this event, the manuscript will be treated as a new submission.
  18. Short Communications are concise manuscripts of two or less journal pages which represent not more than 10 double-spaced manuscript pages inclusive of figures, tables, and references. Authors must state explicitly in the covering letter that the paper is a Short Communication.
  19. After a manuscript has been accepted for publication and after all revisions have been incorporated, manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor‘s Office as hard copy accompanied by electronic files on disk. Label the disk with identifying information ?software, journal name, and first author's last name. The disk must be the one from which the accompanying manuscript (finalized version) was printed out. The Editor's Office cannot accept a disk without its accompanying, matching hard-copy manuscript.
  20. The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs.
