About the journal

The journal publishes original articles by international scientists on the progress of research in animal production, quantitative genetics, biology, and evolution of domestic animals. Researchers, teachers, and the animal breeding industry will find the reports of interest. Articles are published in English and German (approximately 90% of contributions are in English). Book reviews appear in many issues.

A supplemental series Advances in Animal Breeding and Genetics/Fortschritte in der Tierzüchtung und Züchtungsbiologie is published at irregular intervals.

Fields of interest: Theoretical and applied animal breeding and related fields

Instructions to Authors

1. GENERAL

The Journal of Animal Breeding and Genetics publishes original articles and book reviews in the field of applied and theoretical animal breeding, animal genetics, and related fields. The articles are published in English (in accordance with the Concise Oxford Dictionary, 7th ed. Oxford: Clarendon Press 1982), German and French.

2. SUBMISSION AND ACCEPTANCE OF MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts for publications should be addressed to the Executive Editor Prof. Dr. G. Erhardt, Ludwigstr. 21b, 35390 Gießen, Germany, and be inscribed "Journal of Animal Breeding and Genetics".

Please submit your manuscript on diskette, zip, or CD-ROM with two hardcopies and retain a copy for yourself. Manuscripts must conform to the journal style and should be submitted in the final version containing all revisions. Upon acceptance of your manuscript, you will receive the Manuscript Submission form to be returned to the editor within one week. This form includes, among other items, your complete correspondence address, the copyright transfer agreement, and the guidelines for colour print charges. Acceptance of manuscripts for publication is decided by the Executive Editor on the basis of one or several expert advisers' opinions.

Your manuscript will be destroyed three months after publication. Only appropriately marked originals will be returned. The publisher cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss through the post.

Correspondence concerning technical questions arising during printing should be sent to the publisher: BlackwellWissenschafts-Verlag GmbH, Kurfürstendamm 57, 10707 Berlin, Germany.

3. REQUIREMENTS FOR MANUSCRIPTS

3.1. Format

Manuscripts are to be submitted in duplicate in one of the official languages of publication (German, English, French). They must be typewritten, if possible on DIN A4 (format paper 21 ?29.7 cm), with a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and double spaced. Each article should have the following: Summary; Introduction; Material and methods; Results; Discussion; and References. The summary should be in English (and if possible in German, French, and Spanish).

In addition to the name(s) of the author(s), the address of the institution, where the work was carried out, should be given at the beginning. At the end of the manuscript, the full address(es) of the author(s) is required. Please also supply the e-mail address of the corresponding author.

The manuscript comprises a printout of the text and a list of all figures and tables with their captions and titles on a separate piece of paper. We ask that you convey the essential information within the first 60 characters of the captions to accommodate the online edition. Each figure, table, and bibliographic entry must have a reference in the text. For all figures please include reproduceable artwork (marked with the author's name, short title, and figure number). Any corrections requested by the reviewer should already be integrated into the file.

The data carriers (diskette, etc.) must be PC/Windows-compatible and may not contain any files other than those for the current manuscript. Please include a list of the files, noting the file name, the computer program and its version number. Please do not import the figures into the text file. The text should be prepared using standard software (Microsoft Word, Word Perfect) or saved in rtf format; do not use automated or manual hyphenation. Please do not include footnotes.

For further information please consult:
www.blackwell-science.com/elecmed/authors.htm.

3.2. Length

Original articles should be as concise as possible and not exceed 20 pages; short communications 4 pages. The number and size of figures and tables must be strictly limited to the essential minimum.

3.3. Units, Abbreviations and Nomenclature

All units of measurement must follow the S.I. system. (Consult the pamphlet Gesetz über Einheiten im Meßwesen. A copy may be obtained from the publisher on request.) Concentrations of solutions should be given as molar concentrations. All other concentrations should be expressed as percentages.

Abbreviations of biological, chemical or other terms should only be used when such abbreviations are unambiguous and internationally recognized. In any case, the first time an abbreviation is used the full name must also be given.

3.4. Illustrations and Tables

Figures should be saved in a neutral data format such as TIFF or EPS, and a printout should always be included. Powerpoint and Word graphics are unsuitable for reproduction. Please do not use any pixel-oriented programmes. Scanned figures (only in TIFF format) should have a resolution of 300 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size. Please submit the data for figures in black and white. However, colour photos can be reproduced in black and white (with a possible loss of contrast). Figures printed in colour are subject to an added charge. Colour print charges are explained on the manuscript submission form (see 2.). Colour graphics should be created using the CMYK colour palette (print colours), not RGB (monitor colours). There is a charge for alterations to figures when carried out by the publisher.

Please note that figures will generally be reduced to fit within the column-width or the print area. This means that numbering and lettering must still be readable when reduced (e.g. maps) and that the scale might not correspond with the original (microscopic pictures), thereby invalidating references to scale in the text. If a figure is to be cropped, please mark the lines on a photocopy or tracing paper. Printouts should be made with a laserprinter at the highest resolution (> 600 dpi). If artwork is to be scanned, line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (shades of grey). Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible.

Graphs with an x and y axis should not be enclosed in frames; only 2-dimensional representations. Do not forget the labels and units. Captions for the figures should give a precise description of the content and should not be repeated within the figure.

Tables should be created using the table function.

If figures or tables are taken from other publications, the source must be given. Illustration of a specific statement by both tables and figures (line drawings) is not desirable.

3.5. References

Each original contribution, and as a rule each shorter communication, should have a bibliography that is limited to the publications cited in the text. The name of a journal in which a paper appears should be given in abbreviated form as it appears on the cover of the journal quoted. If the title is not abbreviated, DIN standard No 1502 with its supplement should be consulted. A copy may be obtained from the publisher on request. The references should be in alphabetical order of the names of the authors, and should give the full title of the paper. Anonymous contributions should be cited at the beginning of the bibliography. The references given below show how the references should be drawn up:

a. From journals:

Horn, B., 1998: The expression of "Recombination Loss" in quantitative traits. Anim. Genet. 19: 38-43.

b. From books or other nonserial publications:

Wilson, J.; Brown, R., 1999: Introduction to numerical analysis. Blackwell Science, Oxford.

c. From reference book contributions:

Schneider, E. P., 1996: Trends in cattle production. In: Oblonski, H.; Ruka, R. (eds), Methods of Cattle Breeding. Warsaw, Poland.

d. An unpublished work should only be cited when it has been accepted for publication, and then together with the name of the journal in which it has been accepted. For example:

Helden, E.; Van Geeden, L. D., 1999a: Selection with restriction in cattle. J. Agr. Sci. (In Press).

In the running text, citations should be made as in the following examples: Bill and Bode (1998), or Richter 1996, 1999; Starck and Muller 2000). With up to two authors, the names should be given; with more than two authors the name of the first author should be given followed by 'et al.'.

4. COPYRIGHT

Publication in the journal can only take place under the condition, that the manuscript has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Upon submission of the manuscript to the publisher, the author certifies that neither his contribution nor any foreign text or figures contained therein that he procures infringe upon the rights of a third party, and that he alone is authorized to dispose of the existing right of utilization with regard to copyright. The author will refrain from any other duplication and distribution or digital transfer and reproduction (e.g. on the Internet) during the period of the contract. For the duration of the lawful copyright, the author grants the publisher regardless of location the exclusive right of duplication and dissemination (right of publication) without restriction as to the intangible reproduction of the article, the right to make the article available to any individual online as well as the right of issuance of licenses to third parties nationally and abroad for the exercise of the granted ancillary rights. The publisher is authorized to make use of the utilization rights to which he is entitled; however, he is not obligated to do so.

5. PROOF CORRECTION AND OFFPRINTS

Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:

www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs. Please sign the corrected proof and return it without delay to:

The Executive Editor
Journal of Animal Breeding and Genetics
Prof. Dr. G. Erhardt
Ludwigstr. 21b
35390 Gießen
Germany

Proof corrections should be carried out as shown in 'Recommendations for Proof Correction'. As changes to proofs are costly, we ask that you only correct typesetting errors. References to other pages within the paper must be avoided.

Offprints can be ordered on the form attached to the proofs. Orders placed at a later date are subject to a higher charge. Offprints and complimentary copies will be sent to the corresponding or first-named author for distribution, unless otherwise noted on the order form.

6. BOOK REVIEWS

At the end of each issue, book reviews are usually published in the field of animal breeding, animal production and genetics. Books received by the Journal will be passed on by the editor to suitable specialists for review. Reviewers must return within three month the manuscript of the review to the editor, or return of the review copy of the book will be requested. At the beginning of each book review, precise bibliographic details must be given .in the following form: Family name, followed by the Forename initials of the author of the book; the book's title; which edition (if not the first; place of publication; name of publisher; year of publication; number of pages, figures and tables; binding; and retail price. The review copy of a book remains the property of the reviewer.

7. SUPPLEMENTS

The publication of specially important monographs in the field of animal breeding and population genetics is possible in the form of supplements to the Journal, though the frequency of publication of such supplements is limited. They appear under the title Advances in Animal Breeding and Genetics. Such supplements are published as required at irregular intervals and may be in German or English. The decision regarding publication of monographs in the supplements is made jointly by the editor of this series and the publisher. Each supplement in this case consists of five to eight printed sections of 16 pages each (altogether between 100 and 160 manuscript pages). The publication of supplements may be dependent upon provision of a financial subsidy from the author or from a third party.

The Editor and publisher endeavour to publish all articles accepted for the Journal as quickly as possible. They request all authors to carefully observe the recommendations laid down in the 'Editorial Guidelines', so that publication of the Journal may be carried out within the highest possible efficiency, and to everyone's satisfaction.
