About the journal

The journal publishes original papers, short communications, reviews, and book reviews in the field of general and special science of yield and quality of field and fodder crops. In addition to the traditional focus special regard is given to a multidisciplinary approach of crop and production ecology including stress factors as well as aspects of biodiversity and use of natural resources. Targeting the scientific basics of a sustainable agricultural production in both cropping and grazing systems of temperate, Mediterranean, subtropical, and tropical regions, particular regard is given to an application-oriented basic research as well as to applied research. Thus, the Journal of Agronomy and Crop Science continuously offers a survey on agricultural research all over the world.

Fields of interest: The entire field of agronomy and crop science, including grassland management.

Instructions to Authors
1. General

The journal publishes original papers in English (and German), short communications, reviews, and book reviews in the field of general and special science of yield and quality of field and fodder crops. An extra summary in German reflects on the German origin of the Journal. In addition to the traditional focus special regard is given to a multidisciplinary approach of crop and production ecology including stress factors as well as aspects of biodiversity and use of natural resources. Targeting in the scientific basics of a sustainable agricultural production in both cropping and grazing systems of temperate, Mediterranean, subtropical, and tropical regions. Particular regard is given to an application-oriented basic research as well as to applied research. 2. Submission and Acceptance of Manuscripts

Please send your manuscript to the Editor:

Prof. Dr. J. M. Greef
Federal Agricultural Research Centre
Institute of Crop and Grassland Science
Bundesallee 50
38116 Braunschweig
Germany

In order to accelerate the acceptance procedure we recommend forwarding a summary or abstract by email to the Editor (joerg.greef@fal.de). Thus the suitability and relevance of a manuscript could be quickly appraised.

Please submit your manuscript on diskette, zip, or CD-ROM with 2 hardcopies and retain a copy for yourself. Manuscripts must conform to the journal style and should be submitted in the final version containing all revisions. After having received your paper the Editor will forward it to referees before he decides whether it is definitively accepted or rejected, or whether revisions are necessary. The review process needs some time, possibly some months. The date of receipt and the date of final acceptance will be inserted by the Editors and published in the journal. Upon acceptance of your manuscript you will receive the form Manuscript Submission to be returned to the Editor within (5) days. This form includes, among other items, your complete correspondence address, the copyright transfer agreement, and the guidelines for colour print charges.

The Managing Editor decides in which issue of the Journal and in what order the paper is to be published. Your manuscript will be destroyed three months after publication. Only appropriately marked originals will be returned. The publisher cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss through the post.

3. Requirements for Manuscripts

3.1. Format

The first page should contain the name and address of the institute where the work has been originated, the title of the paper, name(s) and initial(s) of the author(s), the e-mail address of the corresponding author, and the number of figures and tables.

The main text shall be preceded by an abstract which is always in English and contains the background for the research undertaken, reference to the material and methods used, as well as main results and conclusions. It should not exceed 200 words. Up to six 'key words' should be added. A short version of the title (running title) should also be given.

The main text should be divided into the following sections: introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, summary (,acknowledgements), and references. Facts explained by tables or figures need no lengthy explanation in the text. Numerical material should be submitted only after statistical processing. The languages of publication are English and German.

The summary (Zusammenfassung) is always in German and should not exceed 200 words. The Editors will help non-German authors in writing the German-language summary. The title of the English language paper is given in German in the summary; the English title of the German language paper is given in the 'Abstract'. For German manuscripts, captions to figures and tables should be submitted in German and in English.

The manuscript comprises a printout of the text and a list of all figures and tables with their captions and titles on a separate piece of paper. In anticipation of the online edition, we ask that you convey the essential information within the first 60 characters of the captions. Each figure, table, and bibliographic entry must have a reference in the text. The preferred position for the insertion of figures and tables should be marked on the margin of the text of the manuscript. Any corrections requested by the reviewer should already be integrated into the file.

The data carriers (diskette, etc.) must be PC/Windows-compatible and may not contain any files other than those for the current manuscript. Please include a list of the files, noting the file name, the computer program and its version number. Please do not import the figures into the text file. The text should be prepared using standard software (Microsoft Word, Word Perfect) or saved in rtf format; do not use automated or manual hyphenation. Please do not include footnotes.

For further information please visit:

www.blackwell-science.com/elecmed/authors.htm.

3.2. Length

The manuscript should be typed double spaced with a 4 cm left margin. Manuscripts, including figures and tables, should not exceed 12 printed pages (4000 type character page). The publication of shorter papers may be given priority. Short communications should not exceed four printed pages, including figures and tables.

3.3. Units, Abbreviations and Nomenclature

All units and measures must conform to the international standard-system (SI-system). Botanical genus and species names should be set in italics.

3.4. Illustrations and Tables

The number of tables and figures should be kept to the minimum necessary. For all figures please include reproduceable artwork (marked with the author's name, short title, and figure number). Figures submitted as electronic file should be saved in a neutral data format such as TIFF or EPS, and a printout should always be included. Powerpoint and Word graphics are unsuitable for reproduction. Please do not use any pixel-oriented programmes. Scanned figures (only in TIFF format) should have a resolution of 300 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size. Please submit the data for figures in black and white. However, colour photos can be reproduced in black and white (with a possible loss of contrast). Figures printed in colour are subject to an added charge. A single page in colour costs EUR 566,- plus reproduction costs and VAT. For additional prices please contact the publisher. Colour print charges are explained on the manuscript submission form. Colour graphics should be created using the CMYK colour palette (print colours), not RGB (monitor colours). There is a charge for alterations to figures when carried out by the publisher.

Please note that figures will generally be reduced to fit within the column-width or the print area. This means that numbering and lettering must still be readable when reduced (e.g. maps) and that the scale might not correspond with the original (microscopic pictures), thereby invalidating references to scale in the text. If a figure is to be cropped, please mark the lines on a photocopy or tracing paper. Printouts should be made with a laserprinter at the highest resolution (> 600 dpi). If artwork is to be scanned, line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (shades of grey). Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible.

Graphs with an x and y axis should not be enclosed in frames; only 2-dimensional representations. Do not forget the labels and units. Captions for the figures should give a precise description of the content and should not be repeated within the figure.

Tables should be created using the table function.

3.5. References

The references should be arranged alphabetically and contain: the author's name, first name (initial(s)), year of publication, title of paper, name of journal, volume number, and first and last page number of the publication. (Example: Poysa, V.W., and E. Reinbergs, 1983: The response of Some Facultative Triticale to Extended Vernalisation. Z. Acker- und Pflanzenbau 152, 89-99.)

Bibliographic references to books or other established publications should contain: name, first name (initials), year of publication, and edition, publishing house and place of publication (Example: Schlichting, E., 1986: Einf¨¹hrung in die Bodenkunde, Pareys Studientexte Nr. 58. Verlag Paul Parey, Hamburg und Berlin).

Within the text should be given the name of the author and the date of publication, e.g. M¨¹ller (1980) or (M¨¹ller 1980). If more than one publication of the same author appeared in one year, these should be marked by small letters after the year, e.g. 1983a; 1983b. References to publications by more than two authors should be cited as follows: M¨¹ller et al. (1980) or (M¨¹ller et al. 1980).

4. Copyright

Publication in the journal can only take place under the condition, that the manuscript has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Upon submission of the manuscript to the publisher, the author certifies that neither his contribution nor any foreign text or figures contained therein that he procures infringe upon the rights of a third party, and that he alone is authorized to dispose of the existing right of utilization with regard to copyright. The author will refrain from any other duplication and distribution or digital transfer and reproduction (e.g. on the Internet) during the period of the contract. For the duration of the lawful copyright, the author grants the publisher regardless of location the exclusive right of duplication and dissemination (right of publication) without restriction as to the intangible reproduction of the article, the right to make the article available to any individual online as well as the right of issuance of licenses to third parties nationally and abroad for the exercise of the granted ancillary rights. The publisher is authorized to make use of the utilization rights to which he is entitled, however, he is not obligated to do so. The author receives 25 offprints free of charge. There are no page charges.

5. Proof Correction and Offprints

You will receive proofs of your article. Please check, sign and return them without delay. Please be sure that you can be reached during this time. As changes to proofs are costly, we ask that you only correct typesetting errors.

Additional offprints can be ordered on the form attached to the proofs. Orders placed at a later date are subject to a higher charge. Offprints and complimentary copies will be sent to the corresponding or first-named author for distribution, unless otherwise noted on the order form.

6. Book Reviews

Books submitted for review are forwarded by an editor-in-chief to appropriate specialists for review. The review copy remains property of the reviewer, but no royalty is paid. At the beginning of each book review, precise bibliographic details must be provided. Please use the system of punctuation as in the following example:

Singleton, L. L., J. Mihail, and C. M. Rush (eds), Methods for Research on Soilborne Phytopathogenic Fungi. St. Paul, Minnesota: APS Press, 1993. 265 pp., 125 figs, 24 tables, US$ 34.00 ISBN 0890541272.

7. Supplements

Manuscripts of scientific interest unsuitable for publication in the Journal because of their length may be considered for publication in German or English in the supplement series Advances in Agronomy and Crop Science appearing at irregular intervals. The decision as to their acceptance is made by the Managing Editor in consultation with the Publisher. As a rule, supplements can be published only if a subsidy is provided by the author or a third party. The supplements should not exceed 96 printed pages, including figures, tables and bibliography
