Subjects:

Contributors to the JAE should note that, in choosing subjects for articles, the objects of the Society are 'to promote the study and teaching of agricultural economics and relevant disciplines, and their application to issues in the agricultural, food and related industries, rural communities and the environment. The relevant disciplines include economics, statistics, marketing, business management, politics, history and sociology'. Preference will be given to articles which deal either with new developments in research and methods of analysis, or apply existing methods and techniques to new problems and situations which are likely to be of general interest to the Journal's international readership. The Journal is not a suitable publication for articles of purely local interest. Articles should be clearly and concisely written and should normally not exceed 7,000 words. Articles greatly in excess of this limit cannot be considered for publication.

Notes and Comments:

Shorter papers and comments, of up to 1,500 words, will also be considered for publication. Such notes might appropriately deal with the economic aspects of current questions of agricultural policy, with the results of small research projects not justifying a full-length article, or comment on articles previously published.

Anyone wishing to submit a comment on an article appearing in the JAE, should in the first instance, send a copy of their comment to the author as well as the Editor. This enables clarification of any points of misunderstanding and also allows the author to prepare a reply in the same issue of the Journal. The Editor has sole responsibility regarding the suitability of correspondence published in the Journal.

Editorial Process:

The Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors assess the initial suitability of articles submitted. Submissions considered to be suitable for the JAE will be sent out to at least two reviewers who will referee the article. Unsuitable articles are returned to the authors with a short note of explanation from the Editor-in-Chief. The refereeing process is "double-blind": the identity of the author remains anonymous to the referee and vice versa. Authors may be asked to re-submit their article in revised form, though in all but exceptional circumstances, the Editor will consider only one re-submission. Upon completion of the refereeing and editorial processes, authors and referees will be notified of the Editor's decision about publication with explanatory feedback, including referees' reports. The lag between receipt of submission and first response varies, but a three-month turnaround should be expected. Every effort is made to ensure that this target is achieved, though it cannot be guaranteed.

Preparation of Manuscript:

There are no specific requirements for the style or presentation of articles submitted to the JAE except that they should be appropriate for the purposes at hand. A 12 point type face with line spacing of 1.5 is satisfactory. Diagrams and tables should be arranged, as far as possible, in portrait with figures, headings and labels orientated horizontally, using black and white only. Equations should appear on a separate line with equation numbers (where necessary) aligned at the right hand margin. Where appropriate, full mathematical workings should accompany the articles in order to assist the referees. These workings will not be published. References should be cited according to the Harvard System, i.e. author(s)' names and date of publication to be given in the body of the text and the references collected alphabetically at the end of the paper. The title of the journal or source should be given in full. Please see a recent issue of the JAE for guidance. In the case of articles quoting statistics (such as regression coefficients) based on unquoted data, authors should be prepared to send to the Editor a copy of the data and details of the methodology used (possibly in the form of a self-explanatory computer printout) so that the referee may test the derivation of such statistics.

Exclusive Licence Form:

Authors are required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher of production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors retain the right to publish their paper subject to certain conditions detailed on the ELF.

Page Charges and Submission Fees:

There are no page charges or submission fees at the JAE. Non-members wishing to submit an article are required to join the Society, and confirm that they have done so when they submit.

Book Reviews:

The JAE publishes reviews typically around 1500 words in length, of relevant books listed in the publications received section of each issue. Anyone wishing to act as a reviewer should contact David Harvey, Book Review Editor, Email: David.Harvey@Ncl.Ac.uk

Early View:

The Journal of Agricultural Economics is included in Wiley-Blackwell's Early View service. Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access article.

Wiley's Author Services:

Wiley's Author Services technology enables authors to track the production status of their accepted articles. Additionally, it offers authors free access to their published articles online and the ability to nominate up to ten colleagues for free access to the article. To find out more about Wiley's Author Services please visit http://authorservices.wiley.com
