About the journal

The Journal of Advanced Nursing informs, educates, explores, debates and challenges the foundations of nursing health care knowledge and practice worldwide. Well known and well respected, it is a combination of scholarly papers covering a broad range of all aspects of nursing care, nursing education, management and research.

It is oriented towards intermediate and advanced nursing staff and publishes research papers, news and books reviews. It is essential reading for senior nurses, midwives, health visitors and advanced nursing students.

Journal of Advanced Nursing publishes scholarly papers that recognize the eclectic nature of global nursing, midwifery and health care, and which contribute to their development and advancement. Papers that have a sound scientific, theoretical or philosophical base, and which reflect the diversity, quality and internationalism of nursing will be considered for publication. The editorial team does not seek to impose one model for practice. For JAN, nursing is what different nurses do at different times and in different places. It is advanced nursing when nurses question their practice within its specific cultural, political, economic, social and technological context, asking whether their practice is as effective, efficient and compassionate as possible, given the particular circumstances. Nurses need to be educated to practise intelligently, think ethically, understand research and its application, and to be aware of the constraints of the socio-economic and political climates within which they work. Nursing and midwifery also form part of a complex web of health care. Advanced nursing is about making this complexity explicit. Papers are therefore welcomed from other health care professionals and researchers if they contribute to the overall objective of understanding advanced nursing and midwifery within health care systems.

Manuscript style

The following checklist should be used to check the manuscript before submission:

  • Manuscripts must be submitted online at http://jan.manuscriptcentral.com
  • All parts of the manuscript must be available in an electronic format; those recommended are: generic rich text format (RTF) or Microsoft Word for text, and JPEG, GIF, TIFF, EPS, PNG, Microsoft PowerPoint or Excel for graphics. It is recommended that, where possible, figures be embedded into a single Microsoft Word document.
  • Manuscripts should be typed using double spacing size of 12 pt.
  • No identifying details of the authors or their institutions must appear in the submitted manuscript. Author details will be inputted as part of the online submission process.
  • The title page should give both a descriptive title and short title. The title should be concise and should give a brief indication of what is in the paper.
  •  The title should be followed by a structured abstract, not exceeding 300 words, which accurately summarizes the paper content. The following headings could be used if appropriate: the study¡¯s background and/or rationale; aims; methods; results/findings; and conclusions. The summary should not include references or abbreviations.
  • The abstract should be followed by up to 10 keywords that accurately identify the paper¡¯s subject, purpose and focus.
  •  A clear summary statement is required. The summary is quite different from the abstract in terms of purpose; its aim is to highlight the new knowledge being communicated in JAN papers. Under each of the headings ¡®What is already known on this topic¡¯ and ¡®What this study adds¡¯, you should include two or three clear and straightforward statements as bullet points.
  • In the case of reported empirical research the manuscript should include the study¡¯s background; significance; purpose and aims; methodological design and justification; research methods; rigour; ethical issues and approval; results/findings; study limitations; discussion and conclusions.
  • The year of data collection should be included.
  • Footnotes and appendices should not be used.
  • The hierarchy of headings within the text should be clear; upper case bold for heading 1, lower case bold for heading 2, italics for heading 3, etc.
  • Spelling should conform with that used in The Concise Oxford Dictionary and abbreviations with those in Units, Symbols and Abbreviations published by the Royal Society of Medicine Press. Each article will be edited to conform to JAN¡¯s house-style.
  • Abbreviations should be used sparingly and only if a lengthy name or expression is repeated throughout the manuscript. When used, the abbreviated name or expression should be cited in full at first usage, followed by the accepted abbreviation in parentheses.
  • Respondents¡¯ numbers or pseudonyms should identify qualitative research findings, normally in the form of direct quotations. They should provide evidence of a balance of reporting across the whole spectrum of responses.
  • Statistical methods used should be defined and, where appropriate, supported by references. Authors of papers containing statistics should refer to the statistical guidelines on the JAN homepage (http://www.journalofadvancednursing.com/default.asp?file=statistical)
  • Keep a copy of the original manuscript for reference. An e-mail acknowledging the online submission of a manuscript will be sent by the journal. Any material sent to the Editorial Office will not be returned.

Copyright, author contribution, acknowledgements and ethical approval

All manuscripts are considered on the understanding that they have not been published previously in print or electronic format nor are they under consideration by another publication or medium. A copyright and author contribution form must be printed out and signed as part of the online manuscript submission process.   To access this form please click here.  This form must be sent by post to the Editorial Office at the time of electronic submission. The author contribution form will ask for:

  • the names of all authors and details of the contribution each made to the work described in the paper,
  • details of any funding,
  • details of any acknowledgements,
  • a statement indicating whether ethical approval was sought and granted for the research described.

References

  • References within the text should cite the authors¡¯ names followed by the date of publication, in chronological date order, e.g. (Lewis 1975, Barnett 1992, Chalmers 1994).  Where there are three or more authors, the first author¡¯s name followed by et al. will suffice, e.g. (Barder et al. 1994), but all authors should be cited in the reference list. Page numbers should be given in the text for all quotations, e.g. (Chalmers 1994, p. 7). All references should be cited from primary sources.
  • References follow the Harvard style, i.e. they are listed in alphabetical order of first authors¡¯ names.
  • When a paper is cited, the reference list should include authors¡¯ surnames and initials, date of publication, title of paper, name of journal in full, volume number (and issue number where volume pages do not run on), and first and last page numbers.
  • When a book is cited, the title should be stated, followed by the publisher and town, county/state (and country if necessary) of publication.
  • Where a chapter in an edited book is cited, details of author and editors should be given as well as publisher, place of publication, and first and last page numbers. The edition (where appropriate) of all books should be identified.
  • References stated as being ¡®in press¡¯ only acceptable if accompanied by proof of acceptance.

Figures and tables

Always include a citation in the text for each figure and table. Artwork should be submitted online in electronic form. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available on the Blackwell Publishing website at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/submit_illust.asp. Any abbreviations used in figures and tables should be defined in an footnote.

Approval for reproduction/modification of any material (including figures and tables) published elsewhere should be obtained by the authors/copyright holders before submission of the manuscript. Contributors are responsible for any copyright fee involved.

Page proofs

Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The author¡¯s e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 1 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following website: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html. Installation of Acrobat Reader will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Corrected proofs must be returned promptly. Major changes will not be entertained at this stage because of the high cost of correction.

Offprints

Twenty-five free offprints will be supplied to the corresponding author of each paper, 4¨C6 weeks after publication. Further offprints may be ordered when returning proofs. Single issues of the journal can be purchased from our customer services department (http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/cservices).
