About the journal

The International Journal of Refrigeration is essential reading for all those wishing to keep abreast of research and industrial news in refrigeration, air conditioning and associated fields. This is particularly important in these times of rapid introduction of alternative refrigerants. The journal has published special issues on alternative refrigerants and novel topics in the field of boiling, condensation, heat pumps, ice-water systems and more.

As well as original research papers International Journal of Refrigeration also includes review articles, papers presented at IIR Commission Meetings, short communications and letters describing preliminary results and experimental details, and letters to the Editor on recent areas of discussion and controversy. Other features include forthcoming events, conference reports and book reviews.

Papers are published in either English or French with titles, abstracts, captions and the Institute news section in both languages.

Months of publication: January, February, April, May, June, August, October and December

Index bound in last issue of calendar year.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers

The International Journal of Refrigeration is published by Elsevier Science Ltd for the International Institute of Refrigeration. Papers may be submitted in English or French. In all cases, five copies of the original manuscript and figures are required.

Authors of papers in English are requested to their papers to the Editor-in-Chief or to one of the Regional Editors. Papers in French should be submitted to Professor Monique Lallemand; food-related papers should be sent to Professor Tuan Pham. Editors' addresses can be found on the inside front cover of the journal and on the journal's web-site.

Papers will be reviewed and assessed by independent referees.

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Types of Contribution

Research papers should report original research or development of techniques and applications. They should be written with a wide readership in mind and should emphasise the practical significance of the work. The objective should be stated, procedures clearly explained and results and conclusions given.

Review papers should provide an authoritative account of the current situation in a topic of major significance, discussing the previous development of the subject and future directions. Prospective authors should send suggestions for review papers to the Editor-in-Chief before manuscripts are submitted.

Short Reports, which are submitted in the same way as papers, concentrate on new techniques, concepts and instruments; they should not exceed 1500 words and simple illustrations may be included. The journal will also consider notices of forthcoming meetings and exhibitions, conference reports and book reviews, which should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief.

Letters to the Editor arising out of published articles and papers will also be considered for publication and should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief.

Manuscript Preparation

General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. All pages should be numbered consecutively. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Abstract: An abstract of 150 words should be provided and should indicate the full scope of the contribution and include the principal conclusions. Abstracts are often used in secondary publications and, if well written, can attract potential readers. Authors must include 3-6 suggested keywords at the end of the abstract. A list of keywords is available on the IIR website: http://www.iifiir.org.

Text: Authors are urged to write as concisely as possible. Research papers should not normally exceed 3000 words with an average of 8 figures and 2 tables (the inclusion of more figures and tables will reduce the word allowance, and vice versa). The abstract, the nomenclature, concise figure captions and references are additional to the length allowance. Review papers should not normally exceed 5000 words. The Editors reserve the right to require authors to conform with the length guidelines given here.

Follow this order when typing manuscripts: title, authors and affiliations, abstract, keywords, main text, acknowledgements, appendices, references, figures, figure captions and then tables. Do not import the figures or tables into your text. Names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses of the authors should appear in the title page of the manuscript. Please indicate in a footnote on your paper if you are an Officer of the IIR or Member of an IIR Commission. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.

Units and Abbreviations: The use of SI units is mandatory; other equivalents should be given in parentheses afterwards, if necessary. If measurements were not carried out in SI units, the SI conversion factor should be given. Units should take a form such as Wm-2K-1 rather than W/(m2K). The number of significant figures should correspond to the accuracy of measurements. If a number of symbols are used the author must provide a nomenclature list of these symbols and their meanings typed on a separate piece of paper. British Standards BS 350, 1991 and 3763 or ISO/R31 may be referred to for units, abbreviations and symbols. The term "billion" (109 in America and 1012 in Europe) is ambiguous and should not be used.

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text make references using a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. "Since Peterson [1] has shown..."), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper. Journal titles may be abbreviated in accordance with the recommendations of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/R4).
References should be given in the following form:

[1] Tagliafico LA, Tanda G. Radiation and natural convection heat transfer from wire-and-tube heat exchangers in refrigeration appliances. Int J Refrigeration 1997;20;470-82
[2] Sereno AM, Sa MM, Figuereido AM. Low temperature phase transition in natural osmotic dehydrated fruits. In: Lenart A, Lewicki PP, editors. Osmotic dehydration of fruits and vegetables. Warsaw: Warsaw Agricultural University Press, 1995. p. 5-68

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all considered to be figures. They are to be referred to as 'Fig. 1', 'Fig. 2', etc, and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: Authors will be charged for colour at current printing costs.
Further information is available at http://authors.elsevier.com.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript (e.g. in graphs). Column headings should be kept as brief as possible and should indicate units of measurement in parentheses.

Disk Submission

Authors should submit an electronic copy of the final version of their paper with three printed copies of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; others may be charged to the author. All queries should be answered in full. Authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department of the relevant Elsevier Science site.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints and a copy of the issue will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints will incur a 50% surcharge.

All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd and the IIR jointly to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations.
