Instructions to Authors
Papers are acceptable on human-computer interaction; the person-computer interface; mathematical and engineering approaches to the study of people; artificial intelligence approaches to the development of computing.
Typical subjects include intelligent user interfaces; natural language interaction; human factors of multimedia systems; human and social factors of virtual reality; human and social factors of world-wide web; human and social factors of software engineering; computer-supported collaborative work; speech interaction; graphic interaction; knowledge acquisition; knowledge-based systems; hypertext and hypermedia; user modelling; empirical studies of user behaviour; the psychology of programming; systems theory and foundations of human-computer interaction; user interface management systems; information and decision-support systems; requirements engineering; innovative designs and applications of interactive systems.
Potential authors should examine previous issues of the Journal to assess both the type of material covered and the style in which it should be presented for publication. It is expected that authors of submitted papers will also be willing to act as referees for other papers in their area.
Formatting Guidelines
¡¤ Preparation of Illustrations
Please refer to the Author Artwork Instructions for information. Explanations and keys should, as far as possible, be placed in the legends.
¡¤ Lay-out
Papers should be typed double-spaced throughout, including tables, footnotes, references and legends to tables and figures. There should be a margin of at least 2.5 cm all round.
¡¤ Language and units
In general, manuscripts should be written in English, with UK of US spelling. Abbreviations and acronyms should be avoided. Authors are recommended to employ Systeme International (metric) units. Special and unusual symbols should be clearly identified.
¡¤ Affiliation
The name of the laboratory where the work has been carried out should be indicated on the title page. The authors' names, full addresses for postal correspondence and email addresses should appear immediately after the title.
¡¤ Summary
A summary will be printed at the head of all papers: this section should not exceed 300 words, and should be intelligible to the general reader without reference to the main text.
¡¤ Conventions
Where it is essential for clear cross-referencing, particularly in mathematically-oriented material, paragraphs and sub-paragraphs may be numbered, and the decimal system should be used, i.e. 1, 1.1, 1.1.2, etc.
Citations should be by author; year-numbered citations are not acceptable for refereeing purposes.
All citations in the text should read:
¡¤ in case of one author: the author's name (without initials, unless there is ambiguity) and the year of publication, example: Brown (1973);
¡¤ in case of two authors: both authors' names and the year of publication, example: Brown and Smith (1973);
¡¤ in case of three or more authors: first author's name followed by 'et al.' and the year of publication, example: Brown et al. (1973).
More than one reference from the same author(s) in the same year must be identified by the letters "a", "b", "c", etc., placed after the year of publication. Citations may be made directly (or parenthetically).
Groups of references in the text should be listed first alphabetically, then chronologically.
Examples:
"as demonstrated (Allan, 1996a, 1996b, 1999; Allan and Jones, 1995)."
"Kramer et al. (2000) have recently shown...."
In the list of References, references should be arranged first alphabetically and then further sorted chronologically if necessary.
Examples of the style to be used:
Van der Geer, J., Hanraads, J.A.J., Lupton, R.A., 2000. The art of writing a scientific article. J. Sci. Commun. 163, 51-59.
Strunk Jr., W., White, E.B., 1979. The Elements of Style, third ed. Macmillan, New York.
Mettam, G.R., Adams, L.B. , 1999. How to prepare an electronic version of your article, in: Jones, B.S., Smith , R.Z. (Eds.), Introduction to the Electronic Age, E-Publishing Inc., New York, pp. 281-304.
How to submit
For practical reasons, the Editorial Office encourages authors to submit their manuscripts online through Editorial ManagerTM. However, printed manuscripts are also acceptable.
Only authors submitting their manuscript via Editorial Manager will be able to online track the status of their manuscript in the review procedure.
Papers are not anonymous for refereeing.
¡¤ Submission through Editorial Manager?
For online submission, please follow the instructions on http://ijhcs.editorialmanager.com or click here (PDF, 544 KB) to download the Editorial Manager? authors' tutorial.
Separate stand-alone files should be submitted for each part of the paper, i.e. a separate file should be uploaded for the abstract, text, tables, figures, etc.
The following file formats are preferred for submission:
¡¤ For figures and illustrations: EPS, TIF or JPG (see further guidelines for illustrations in Author Artwork Instructions)
¡¤ For text matter: DOC, RTF, TeX / LaTeX or TXT.
In case of submission via Editorial Manager?, mail submission of original artwork including photographs will be accepted only if the information cannot be presented easily in electronic form. If this is the case, this should be indicated when submitting the accompanying manuscript via Editorial Manager?.
Material should be sent to the Editorial Office of International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, of which the address is given under 'Submission of a print manuscript'.
¡¤ Submission of a print manuscript
Papers should be typed double-spaced throughout, including tables, footnotes, references and legends to tables and figures. There should be a margin of at least 2.5 cm all round. One side of the paper only should be used.
The position of tables and figures should be clearly indicated, in sequence, in the margin. Tables, footnotes and legends to figures should be typed separately.
A cover page should be supplied giving the person and address for correspondence, proofs and reprints. An email address, if available, should also be given.
The full postal address for the despatch of proofs and offprints should be included on a separate page.
Please send four copies of the manuscript and of each figure to:
Editorial Office
International Journal of Human-Computer Studies
Elsevier
Block 2
Westbrook Centre
Milton Road
Cambridge, CB4 1YG
UK
Upon acceptance of the manuscript, the top copy and the original illustrations should be submitted for publication.
Offprints
The Publisher will provide twenty-five offprints of each paper. Further offprints may be ordered at an extra cost at acceptance stage.
