About the journal

International Journal of Fatigue is dedicated entirely to the full range of science and technology associated with fatigue. The scope of the journal includes the study, analysis, and modeling of fatigue and fatigue-related processes from the atomic level to global engineering behaviour, in all classes of materials and material systems.
International Journal of Fatigue provides a timely forum for information and discussion for engineers, researchers, and educators that is dedicated entirely to the subject of fatigue. The technical integrity of the journal is maintained by an international Editorial Advisory Board of leading experts and by the review of all papers (including those in special issues and supplements) by at least two and very often three peers. Timely publication is emphasized (typically within 7-9 months); all papers are available electronically as part of the renowned 'ScienceDirect' on-line service of Elsevier.

Typical subjects discussed in International Journal of Fatigue include the following:
Fatigue of Materials and structures involving engineering materials, biomaterials, nanomaterials and functional materials
Degradation mechanisms (driven by mechanical, chemical, thermal, and other applied environments)
Modeling (including fracture mechanics, damage mechanics, crack growth, kinetics, life prediction, damage tolerance, durability)
Manufacturing and processing effects (associated with forming, machining, curing, initial defects, and residual stresses)
Testing and characterization (including sensors, monitoring, methodology, interactive control, accelerated methods, data interpretation)
Applications of all types including technology associated with fatigue and its implications for structural integrity and reliability. This includes issues related to design, operation and maintenance.

Combined and coupled behaviour such as creep-fatigue and stress rupture-fatigue is also included in the scope of the journal.

The journal particularly welcomes review papers as well as suggestions for special issues either on topical areas in fatigue of materials or containing selected papers from international expert conferences.
International Journal of Fatigue will present two annual awards: one for Advances in Fatigue and one for the Outstanding Paper in any volume.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers

Authors are encouraged to submit their articles online via the electronic submission website http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/jijf. Several electronic formats are acceptable. In the manuscript for review, figures and tables must be embedded into the text. Figures must also be supplied separately as high-resolution files. An electronic (PDF) proof is generated and the reviewing process is carried out using that PDF. Authors and editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is performed. However, authors are legally obliged to sign and return a physical copyright transfer form by conventional mail. Full details can be obtained from the submission website.
[Note: online submissions are used to generate a PDF file for the review process but may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards. It is important that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, this will allow the preferred position of placement to be indicated; however, please note that due to journal conventions, it may not be possible to meet all requirements for placement of artwork.]

Authors can also submit their original manuscript and figures with four copies to any of the editors by regular mail. Addresses for submission: Professor K.L. Reifsnider, c/o Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0219, USA; E-mail: mrl@vt.edu; Professor M.N. James, Department of Mechanical and Marine Engineering, University of Plymouth, Drake Circus, Plymouth PL4 8AA, UK; E-mail: m.james@plymouth.ac.uk. Japanese Editor: Professor K. Tanaka, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Nagoya University, Furo-cho, Chikusa-ku, Nagoya 464-8603, Japan; E-mail: ktanaka@mech.nagoya-u.ac.jp.

The receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged.

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. A statement to this effect should be included in the covering letter which accompanies the manuscript.

All contributions are read by two or more referees to ensure both accuracy and relevance, and revision to the script may thus be required. On acceptance, contributions are subject to editorial amendment to suit house style. When a manuscript is returned for revision prior to final acceptance, the revised version must be submitted as soon as possible after the author's receipt of the referees' report. Revised manuscripts returned after four months will be considered as new submission subject for full re-review.

Types of Contributions
Contributions falling into the following categories will be considered for publication: Original high-quality research papers, short communications. International Journal of Fatigue also publishes book reviews, conference reports and a calendar of forthcoming events, contributions of this type should be sent to the Publishing Editor.

Manuscript Preparation
General: Manuscripts should be in clear and concise English. Authors should note that any papers not meeting an acceptable standard of technical English will not be sent for review. Spelling should follow the Oxford English Dictionary. Authors whose native tongue is not English are assured that in-house editorial attention to their contributions will improve clarity and acceptability to readers. Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. Please number every sheet of paper. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Paper Length: Research papers - no more that 20 double line spaced manuscript pages, including tables and illustrations. Short communications - no more than 10 double line spaced manuscript pages including tables and illustrations.

Abstracts: A self-contained abstract of approximately 100 words, outlining in a single paragraph the aims, scope and conclusions of the paper; between one and five keywords, for indexing purposes, taken from the list appearing at the back of each issue or which can be accessed from the journals homepage.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title (include an abbreviated article title, for use as a running head), Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.

Units and symbols: All measurements and date should be given in SI units, or if SI units do not exist, in an internationally accepted unit. If you use any symbol or unit that may not be generally recognized, please include an explanatory footnote the first time is it used, to help the referees, editors and readers. If is also helpful to identify Greek symbols by name in the margin the first time they appear. Abbreviations and acronyms should only be used for unwieldy terms and names that occur frequently in the manuscript. Abbreviations should be used consistently though the text, and must be clearly defined in full on first use.

Mathematical and technical settings: Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in an appendix. Equations and formulae should be typewritten wherever possible. Equations should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in parentheses on the right hand side of the page. Type mathematics equations exactly as they should appear in print.

References:All publications cited in the text should be presented in a numerical list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name followed by the number in square brackets (e.g. Saxena[1]).
References should be given in the following form:
1. Saxena A. Fatigue crack growth in elevated temperature power-plant materials and components. Fatigue '96: Proceedings of the Sixth International Fatigue Congress, Vol. II. Lutjering G, Nowack H, editors. Oxford: Pergamon, 1996, pp. 729-740.
2. Goranson UG. Fatigue issues in aircraft maintenance and repairs. Int Jnl of Fatigue 1998:20(6):413-431.

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: Colour reproduction is available if the author is willing to bear the additional incremental reproduction and printing costs. Please contact the editorial office for details. A letter confirming the author's willingness to accept these costs should be sent with the revised manuscript.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Disk Submission
Authors should submit a disk copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The disk copy should match the hardcopy exactly.
Always keep a backup copy of the disk file for reference and safety. Full details of disk submission and formats can be obtained from Author Services at Elsevier Science.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department of the relevant Elsevier Science site.

Offprints
Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright
All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations.
