About the journal
Each issue delivers well-documented, thought-provoking articles on clinical, social, and technical advances in the field. Published 8 times a year, the International Journal of Audiology takes a multidisciplinary approach by presenting timely, relevant research in; Psychoacoustics, Anatomy, Physiology, Cellular and molecular biology, Genetics neuroscience, Speech and hearing sciences, Psychology, Social sciences, Epidemiology, Statistics, and Engineering.
Instructions to Authors

International Journal of Audiology invites original articles (in English only) embracing all aspects of the subject. In addition, Review Articles are welcomed as well as Brief Communications, presenting e.g. preliminary results from a pilot study. Letters to the Editor is yet another type of publication which is encouraged. Submitted manuscripts are subject to editorial review and are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of a manuscript to International Journal of Audiology is taken as evidence that no portion of the text or figures has been copyrighted, published or submitted for publication elsewhere unless information regarding previous publication is explicitly cited and permission obtained. A copy of such permission must accompany the submitted manuscript.

Reports concerning studies involving human or animal test subjects should include a statement regarding approval of an ethical committee.

The International Journal of Audiology reserves the right to retain any manuscripts submitted and cannot assume responsibility for loss of manuscripts. Therefore, authors should retain a complete copy of the manuscript, including figures and tables, in case of an emergency.

Manuscripts. The manuscript package should contain one original and three copies of all materials submitted, including a computer diskette or CD of the manuscript, properly labelled with the title of the article, author(s) name(s) in full, and word-processing package used [IBM/PC-compatible (not MAC)] MS Word. Do not pre-format in any desktop-publishing program (for example, PageMaker). All illustrations should also be delivered on the diskette or CD, using any suitable software for PC/Windows environment.

Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced with 2.5-cm (1-inch) margins on only one side of each A4 (or 81/2 x 11 inch) page. Headings, including up to three levels of subheadings, should be used to designate the major sections of the article. Pages should be numbered consecutively in the upper right-hand corner. The surname of the first author should appear on the upper left-hand corner followed by a brief running title. Authors are encouraged to propose up to 5 names of possible referees for their paper.

Title page. The first page of each manuscript should include the title of the article and the names of all authors in full without professional qualifications followed by the institutional affiliations of each author, using a system of superscript letters for clarification. The full postal address as well as the e-mail address of the corresponding author should be provided. If the article was presented at a professional meeting, include the full title, date and location of the meeting. Acknowledgements, grant numbers and supporting agencies should also be listed accordingly.

Abstract. An abstract of 150 words or less should precede each article, including reviews, and include the objective of the study, subjects or materials, methods, results, and conclusions.

Key words. A short list of key words reflecting the content should follow the abstract.

Tables. Tables should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and typed on separate pages. Each table should have a brief explanatory title. Please ensure that all tables are cited in the text in numerical order.

Figures. All figures should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the manuscript. Legends should be prepared on a separate page following the main text and tables and explain each figure in detail. Photographs should be 12.7 x 17.7 cm (5 x 7 inch) black-and-white glossy prints. If colour figures are submitted and accepted, the full cost of printing these in colour is borne by the author. A label indicating the author’s name, figure number and orientation must be affixed to the back of each illustration. Original artwork should be in the form of camera-ready artwork or high-quality laser-prints; hand-drawn or crude computer-generated artwork is unacceptable. Any identifiable photographs of patients must be accompanied by a release form signed by the patient. Illustrations must never be mounted on cardboard but, when mailing, a rigid envelope should be used to prevent damage. Please ensure that all figures are cited in the text.

References. References must be cited in the text using name(s) of author(s) and year of publication
examples: Punch et al, 1995; Anderson and Jones, 1998. The list of references should be in alphabetical order and written double-spaced on a separate page at the end of the main text. References to journals should include (in this order): all authors?names with initials for up to six authors or, for seven or more, the first three authors followed by et al; year; article title; journal name (Index Medicus abbreviations); volume number; and inclusive page numbers.
An example is given below:

References to books should include (in this order): all authors?names with initials for up to six authors or, for seven or more, the first three authors followed by et al; year of publication; chapter title; editors?names with initials (as applicable); book title and edition; city; publisher,; and inclusive page numbers.

Examples are given below.

The author is responsible for ensuring that the references are complete and correct. Manuscripts submitted to another publication, but not yet accepted, should be cited in the text as unpublished data (in parentheses) and not included in the reference list. Manuscripts accepted, but not yet published, should be included in the reference list followed by ""in press"".

Page proofs. Page proofs are sent by the publisher to the corresponding author and should be returned with the least possible delay (usually within 48 hours of receipt).

Reprints. An order form and price list are sent with the page proofs. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks from the date of publication for delivery of reprints.

Authors?Responsibility. The International Journal of Audiology does not hold itself in any way responsible for the statements made or the views put forward in the various papers, nor does it endorse any of the products or materials herein advertised.

Authors are encouraged to submit their figures electronically, either on CD or via Email to the production editor handling the book or journal. Please follow the listed guidelines to ensure your illustrations are reproduced with the highest possible quality.

  • Illustrative charts, tables, diagrams, and photographs should be used to enhance, clarify, or reduce the length of the text. Include as many illustrations (photographs, charts, graphs, and radiographs) as are required to properly illustrate the text. Tables should not be merely a different form of expression of data adequately covered in the text; instead they should be selected and arranged for the sake of clarity and comprehensiveness.
  • Every illustration must be extremely sharp and color balanced. NO blurred images or overexposed or underexposed illustrations will be printed.
  • All figures and all tables will be separately numbered in consecutive series with the chapter number preceding the number of the figure or table, eg, Figure 8-10; Table 2-6; Table 14-5.
  • Tables and legends for illustrations should not be incorporated into the text but typed on separate sheets.
  • PowerPoint images (files) will not be accepted.
  • All images submitted as digital files must be scanned at > 300 dpi and saved in a TIFF or EPS format. Preferred formats: Photoshop (save as TIFF files) and Illustrator (save as EPS files). For electronic line art, scan images at a resolution of at least 1200 dpi and save electronic line art as EPS. For electronic photography, save as TIFF files at a resolution of 300 dpi. TIFF files should be set to the size you want to see the images in the book or journal. TIFF files cannot be resized by the publisher. If you have any questions, please contact our office.
