Editorial Requirements The Journal will accept manuscripts provided that the material is original and has not been submitted for publication elsewhere. This rule does not refer to abstracts or to the oral communication of preliminary findings presented in the proceedings of societies or congresses. Copies of any redundant or duplicate publication(s) should be provided. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter identifying a corresponding author and signed by all the authors. It should include the following statement: "The work in the attached paper entitled... has not been published previously and is not currently being assessed for publication by any journal other than the International Journal of Artificial Organs". In case of multiple authorship a declaration that "Each author has contributed substantially to the research, preparation and production of the paper and approves of its submission to the Journal" should also be added. All papers considered will be read by the editor(s) and peer-reviewed by at least two independent referees. Material judged unsuitable for publication will not be returned unless requested and postage is prepaid. Papers accepted for publication remain the copyright of the Journal. Please mail all copies of your manuscripts in a heavy-duty paper envelope. Photographs and figures may be packed on cardboard backing separately if desired. When initially submitted for review, no disk copy is necessary.
Ethical Standards Studies on human subjects must comply with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975 and those using animals must comply with the laws of the country where the research was conducted. A statement of approval by an Ethics Committee (or its equivalent) of the institutional review of the study aims, design and protocol should be included in the text. A copy of that approval should be available if requested. The names and medical record numbers of patients must be protected and patients must never be recognisable in photographs. Permission for reproduction of all graphic material must be sought from copyright holders and must be provided.
Manuscript Guidelines Authors should follow the guidelines set by the "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" (JAMA 1997; 277: 927-34 and N Engl J Med 1997; 336: 309-15). All abbreviations (including titles of journals) should follow the style of the Index Medicus. Système International d'Unités (SI Units) units should be adopted throughout. Although the author(s)' style will be respected, manuscripts are subject to copy editing according to American medical usage and style.
Manuscript Format Manuscript size is limited to 18 double-spaced typewritten pages corresponding to six pages of printed text, including all text, references and all illustrative material. Authors will be charged € 130,00 for each additional manuscript page. Three hard copies of the manuscript should be supplied. When your paper has been accepted for publication, you will be required to supply a 3.5" floppy disk containing the entire text. It should be written on an IBM-compatible computer with a Microsoft Word 5.1 word processing package. The manuscript copy should be typed on 20.3 by 26.7 cm (8 by 101/2 in), 21.6 by 27.9 cm (81/2 by 11 in) or A4 white bond paper. Letter-quality printing, rather than dot-matrix, is preferred. Typing (using double-spacing) should be on one side of the paper only with one-inch (2.5 cm) margins all round. Articles should conform to the usual structure of title page, abstract and keywords, introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, references, tables, and legends for figures. Each section should begin on a separate sheet. Pages should be numbered in the upper right-hand corner, beginning with the title page. Subheadings may be inserted in the text of long articles to clarify their content.
Title, Abstract, Keywords, Running Head On the title page list authors, including their full names and highest academic degrees. Acknowledge the institutional affiliation of each author at the time of the study in a footnote. The name and address of the corresponding author should also be mentioned. All sources of financial support as well as of equipment and supplies must be disclosed. Also indicate a running head of no more than 40 characters (counting spaces). An abstract of no more than 150 words should follow, outlining the purpose, design, procedures, statistical methods and outcome measures, main findings and conclusions of the study. A list of three to ten key words from the Medical Subject Headings of the Index Medicus should be provided for the purpose of cross-indexing.
Illustrations Submit three complete sets of photographs, drawings, tables, or charts and three clear photocopies of each illustration. All material should be professionally drawn and/or photographed. Only glossy black-and-white prints in 12 by 17 cm and 20 by 25 cm format are acceptable. Illustrations should be numbered on the back and bear the name of the author(s) in pencil. An arrow should indicate the top of the figure. Legends for illustrations should be typed double spaced on a separate page. The symbols, arrows, numbers or letters used to identify parts of the illustration should be clearly explained in the legend. Roman and Arabic numerals respectively should be used to number tables and figures. Each figure or table should be cited in the text in consecutive order. Footnotes may be added to tables.
References Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses. Use the form of references adopted in the 1997 "uniform requirements for manuscripts" (see "Manuscript Guidelines" above). The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the List of Journals indexed in the January issue of the Index Medicus. List all authors when six or less; when seven or more, list only the first three and add "et al".
1. Article in journals: You CH, Lee KY, Chey WY, Menguy R. Electrogastrographic study of patients with unexplained nausea, bloating and vomiting. Gastroenterology 1980;79:311-14.
2. Chapter in books and monographs: Weinstein L, Swarts MN. Pathogenic properties of invading microorganisms. In: Sodeman WA Jr, Sodeman WA, eds. Pathologic physiology: mechanisms of disease. Philadelphia: WB Saunders; 1974. p.457-72.
Proof-reading Contributors are provided with galley proofs and are asked to proof-read them for typesetting errors. Only minor corrections are allowed at this stage but authors may contact the editors if they feel extensive changes are needed. Manuscript changes may not be made if proofs fail to reach the editorial office within 48 hours. The preferred position of tables and figures should be marked in the margin of the proof sheet with an entry, "take in figure 1 here", "take in tables 1-3", etc.
Offprints Offprints may be purchased at the price quoted in the letter of acceptance. The corresponding author will receive a complimentary copy of the issue featuring her/his article.
