The International Journal of Andrology publishes papers on all aspects of andrology, ranging from basic molecular research to the results of clinical investigations. It also publishes full reviews and provocative editorials which discuss and review the hottest topics of the moment.
The Journal's aims are simple - to promote and integrate basic and clinical research in andrology and to publish the latest ideas in the field.
Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines
The International Journal of Andrology publishes articles in English dealing with clinical and experimental andrology. Priority is given to manuscripts which are original, brief and precise. Authors must confirm in writing that the manuscript has not been and will not be published elsewhere. This restriction does not apply to results published as abstracts of communications, as letters to editors, or as preliminary reports.
Manuscripts
Manuscripts must be submitted in three copies plus a copy on disk, either to one of the Associate Editors or to the Chief Editor.

You are encouraged to submit your manuscript to the Editor with the most appropriate expertise in your area. Manuscripts must be typewritten on one side of standardsized paper with double spacing and wide margins. The author should retain a copy for his/her own use. Manuscripts are not insured against loss or damage. The manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: (1) title page, (2) abstract, (3) text, (4) acknowledgements, (5) references, (6) author's address, (7) legends to figures, (8) tables and figures. The author's correspondence address, fax number and E-mail address should be included on a separate sheet of paper.
If a copy of the finally accepted manuscript is not received on disk it will delay publication. Any word-processing format can be handled. The final version of the file on disk and the accompanying hard copy must be the same. Full instructions with regard to submitting on disk can be obtained from the Chief Editor or the Publishers.
Please note: From August 2003, the International Journal of Andrology will accept manuscripts submitted online. Online submission helps the journal to cut the time it takes to make a decision on your paper. You will need your files in an electronic format, an Internet connection, and a user ID and password for the site. To begin a new submission go to http://ija.manuscriptcentral.com and create a new account to get your user ID and password.
Authors will be required to assign copyright in their paper to Blackwell Publishing Ltd. Copyright assignment is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been assigned. (Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement). To assist authors the editorial office will supply an appropriate copyright assignment form.
The Title Page
The title page should contain, on separate lines, the author's institutions, the title of the article, and the names of the author(s). A short title of no more than 40 letters should be supplied for use as a running title. Four to nine key words for indexing purposes should also be given.
The Abstract
The abstract should be concise and is placed before the text.
Text
Papers should be clearly divided into the following sections: introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion with conclusions.
Abbreviations and units
When first mentioned, cumbersome chemical names should be suitably abbreviated for later reference in the paper. Doses of drugs should, if possible, be given as unit weight/body weight, e.g. nmol/kg. Concentrations can be given either in terms of molarity (e.g. nmol/l) or as ng/ml. The SI (Syst¨¦me International) units can be used but are not mandatory. Molarity should refer to the active component.
In abbreviations and symbols, standardized terms should be used. Biochemical terminology should follow the recommendations in Biochemical Nomenclature and Related Documents, published by the Biochemical Society. For enzymes use the nomenclature recommended by IUPAC-IUB Commission as published in Enzyme Nomenclature, Academic Press, New York, 1980. Upon request authors can obtain a more complete list of abbreviations, units etc. from the publisher.
Whenever reference is made to unpublished work of others, a letter of permission from the responsible investigator should be included. Reference to work which is planned or in progress should be avoided.
Illustrations
All photographs, drawings or graphs are referred to as figures, abbreviated (Fig.), and should be numbered in sequence with Arabic numerals. Figures should be planned to fit the printed column, 205 ¡Á 125 mm. The preferred place of each figure should be marked in the left margin of the manuscript. Number, orientation and author's name should be indicated on the back in soft pencil. Each figure should have a legend.
Electronic Artwork
We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PCT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available on the BSL website at: http://www.blackwell-science.com/elecmed/authors.htm. Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse. Always enclose a hard copy of digitally supplied figures.
Photographs
Photographs, except for photomicrographs, should be about one and a half to two times the size of the final block and must be unmounted glossy enlargements showing good detail and moderate but not excessive contrast. Labels, arrows etc. should be professionally prepared, and the lettering uniform and large enough to be read easily when reduced. Photomicrographs should be carefully prepared to fit the printed column (205 ¡Á 125 mm) at unaltered size according to the magnification mentioned in the legend and text.
Line drawings
Line drawings should be in black Indian ink on white paper and should be about twice the size of the final printed version.
Graphs
Graphs should be plotted on plain white paper and be about twice the size of the finished block. Prominence of lettering, lines, curves, and signs should correspond to the relative importance of each component.
Colour illustrations
It is the policy of International Journal of Andrology for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork.
Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is:
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_X_CoW.pdf

However, in exceptional circumstances the Chief Editor may choose to waive part or all of these costs if the authors are able to make a convincing case.
Legends
Text to figures should be typed on a separate sheet and numbered correspondingly. The legend should make the meaning of each illustration understandable without reference to the text. In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure.
Tables
Tables should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and cited in the text. An approximate location in the text should be indicated in the left margin of the manuscript. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet and have a legend which makes its general meaning comprehensible without reference to the text.
References
The authors are responsible for the correctness of references. The references in the text should quote the surnames of the authors and the year of publication, "Brown & Smith (1968)" or "Brown et al. (1968)" when there are more than two authors. The reference list should indicate only the publications mentioned in the text which should be listed in alphabetical order. Titles of journal should be in full.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:
http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/main.html
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.
Offprints
Authors will be provided with electronic offprints of their paper. Paper offprints may be ordered at prices quoted on the order form, which accompanies proofs, provided that the form is returned with the proofs. The cost is more if the order form arrives too late for the main print run. Offprints are normally dispatched within three weeks of publication of the issue in which the paper appears. Please contact the publisher if offprints do not arrive: however, please note that offprints are sent by surface mail, so overseas orders may take up to six weeks to arrive. Electronic offprints are sent to the first author at his or her first e-mail address on the title page of the paper, unless advised otherwise; therefore please ensure that the name, address and e-mail of the receiving author are clearly indicated on the manuscript title page if he or she is not the first author of the paper.
Short Communications
Short communications not exceeding two printed pages are acceptable for rapid publication if requested by the authors.
Letters to the Editor
Letters to the editor, which are subject to critical review, may be published in part or in full. Preference is given to letters related to articles published in the Journal, but letters on topics of current interest may be accepted if space is available. Letters are restricted to 300 words and five references.
Review Articles
Review articles will be published on subjects pertinent to the structure and function of the male reproductive system and male gametes. The Chief Editor will solicit these reviews; unsolicited reviews will undergo the same editorial refereeing process as original manuscripts.
Supplements
The editors reserve the right not to accept papers unless adherence to the principles given in the Declaration of Helsinki and the Guiding Principles in the Care and Use of Animals (DHEW Publication, NIH) is clear.
Please contact either Caroline Walker or Elizabeth Day for further information.
