About the journal
The International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering is a periodical which publishes refereed contributions describing significant developments in numerical methods and their application to the solution of practical engineering problems. It is a companion journal to the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids and the International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, and to Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering, which publishes short manuscripts.
Numerical methods today enjoy a central role in every branch of engineering, due to the explosive development of computational devices of all types. The International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering was founded, over three decades ago, with the objective of providing a platform for the publication of papers in this critical area.
The Journal encourages the contribution of original developments of numerical methods, such as the finite element and boundary integral methods, which are capable of solving a wide class of problems. A method developed to solve problems in structural mechanics may demonstrate value in the solution of problems of fluid flow, and vice versa. Papers featuring the advancement of theory and applications of a particular class of problem are of course appropriate to the Journal.
Numerical procedures (representing, for example, new approaches to the solution of algebraic equations) are of interest to the readership of the Journal when they have a defined role in engineering applications. The same can be said of numerical methods for the modelling and interpretation of engineering analyses, such as the steps customarily associated with computer aided design and computer graphics.
Numerical examples, which help to illustrate the methodology of techniques proposed in a submitted manuscript and verify their validity, are recommended, as are descriptions of practical applications. Publication of a computer program is undertaken if it shows a considerable advance, is coded in a widely-used programming language, is of reasonable length, and is presented clearly.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscript submission (for refereeing purposes). Either submit a PDF version, or three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to Professor Roland W. Lewis, School of Engineering, University of Wales Swansea, Singleton Park, Swansea SA2 8PP, U.K. (e-mail: G.Power@swansea.ac.uk); or to Professor Ted Belytschko, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL 60208, U.S.A. (e-mail: ijnme-us@northwestern.edu); or to Professor Ren?de Borst, Koiter Institute Delft, Delft University of Technology, PO Box 5058, NL-2600 GB, Delft, The Netherlands (e-mail: ijnme@LR.TUDelft.nl); or to Professor Charbel Farhat, Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences, Center for Aerospace Structures, University of Colorado at Boulder, Campus Box 429, Boulder, CO 80309-0429, U.S.A. (e-mail: charbel@alexandra.Colorado.edu).
Authors must also send:
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission
- permission letters - it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce (in all media, including electronic) material which has appeared in another publication.
In the letter of submission, authors are urged to include a list of four potential referees for their manuscript, including the full mailing and e-mail addresses. Authors should not include more than one name from the Editorial or Advisory Board. Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.
Submission of the final, accepted manuscript (for publication purposes). The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the Journal. We are able to use most word-processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect or TeX (LaTeX Class Files are available) or one of its derivatives (PDF or PS are not acceptable as word-processing packages).
Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
Manuscript style. The language of the Journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 30 mm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
- The title page must list the full title, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply a summary of up to 200 words for all articles except book reviews. A summary is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Include up to six key words that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
Reference style. References should be cited in the text by number (within square brackets) and listed at the end of the paper in the order in which they appear in the text. All references must be complete and accurate. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
- Jin WG, Cheung YK, Zienkiewicz OC. Trefftz method for Kirchhoff plate bending problems. International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering 1991; 36:765-781.
- Reismann H. Elastic Plates: Theory and Application. Wiley: New York, 1988; 1-10.
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name and the figure number, with the top of the figure indicated, on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material are not acceptable. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Electronic versions of the artwork should be supplied at the intended size for printing; the maximum column width is 143 mm.
Where colour is a necessity for understanding the figure, colour illustrations will be reproduced in the Journal without charge to the author. Colour illustrations should be supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format. A colour printout of the illustration should also be included with the manuscript.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of the year of the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering and on the Wiley Interscience website at www.interscience.wiley.com. Copies may also be obtained from the Journal editors or publisher.
Further information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking via e-mail. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimize the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Twenty-five complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the Journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
