About the journal
covers various aspects of research in multimedia technology and applications including, but not limited to: circuits, algorithms and macro/micro architectures; software; detailed design, synchronization, interaction, joint processing, and coordination of multimedia and multimodal signals/data; compression, storage, communication, networking, and multimodality devices and systems; all of which affect how we will live, work, and play in the future.  Some types of signals involved include: audio, video, speech, image, communication, geophysical, sonar, radar, medical, and musical.
Instructions to Authors

Readers are encouraged to submit manuscripts of regular papers and correspondence items. To qualify for publication, manuscripts must be previously unpublished and not be under consideration elsewhere.

Submit manuscripts to Manuscript Central via http://tmm-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com.

Do not send manuscripts directly to the Editor-in-Chief or to the Associate Editors.

REGULAR PAPERS: Regular Papers submitted for review in PDF format are to be typed or printed double-spaced (one full blank line between lines of type) using a font size of 11 points or larger. Manuscripts must have at least 1-inch margins on all sides. For purposes of qualifying for peer review and consideration for publication, manuscripts may not exceed 30 pages as formatted above, to include: title page; abstract; all images, figures and tables; and all references. This 30-page submission will not translate to the maximum allowable eight (8) published page standard set for this Transactions. Authors should be aware that exceeding the eight published page standard will incur mandatory payment of overlength page charges. Since changes may require additions to the original manuscript, it is recommended that authors practice economy in preparing their original submissions. Exceptions to the 30-page limitation may be granted by the Editor-in-Chief only, and in unusual circumstances.

CORRESPONDENCE ITEMS: For purposes of peer review as a correspondence item in PDF format, manuscripts are limited to eight (8) pages, to include: title page, abstract, and references, and an appropriate number of illustrations and/or tables. Text is to be double-spaced using a font of 11 points or larger; manuscripts shall have margins of at least 1 inch on all sides.

ABSTRACTS: The first page of the manuscript shall comprise: the title; author(s) name(s) and institutional affiliation(s) and contact information (full mailing address, phone, fax, and e-mail) for all authors (an asterisk * should be placed next to the name of the Corresponding Author who will be the main point of contact for the manuscript during the review and publication process); the abstract; and the EDICS.

For regular papers, an abstract of not more than 200 words is required. For correspondence items, an abstract of not more than 50 words is required. The abstract should indicate the scope of the paper and summarize the author's conclusions so that the abstract, by itself, may be useful in information-retrieval.

ILLUSTRATIONS AND TABLES: For initial submission, illustrations and tables should be placed at the end of the manuscript. (In the printing process, these may be reduced to one-column or two-column width--as much as a 4:1 reduction from the original). In illustrations, all words (as distinct from mathematical symbols) should be in capital letters and in a typesize that will reduce to a minimum of 8 points or 3/16-in. high in the printed version. Sharp, laser-printed illustrations are acceptable; however, illustrations prepared on dot-matrix printers should be redrawn or traced. Only the major grid lines on graphs should be indicated. Each figure and table should have a caption that will be intelligible to the reader without reference to the text. Table and illustration captions should also be typed in a separate list and appended to the manuscript.

COMPUTER-GENERATED IMAGES: If a manuscript includes computer-generated images, each copy of the submitted manuscript should include originals of these images. These originals should take the form of glossy, black-and-white photographs for gray-scale images or color photographs for color images. Note that any illustrations that are to be printed in color will be at the expense of the author. Halftones produced by standard, laser printers (300 dpi) generally are not of acceptable quality and are susceptible to moire patterns if they are re-sized and screened. To conserve space in the publication, most illustrations are reduced to single-column width. However, the quality of the published image is of paramount importance. Guidance is sought from authors regarding the image size necessary for readers to discern the level of detail that the author believes is required. Thus, for each image, please specify a suggested publication width.

ABBREVIATIONS: Regarding abbreviations and units, this Transactions follows the practices of the IEEE, as outlined in the Institute's published standards.

MATHEMATICS: Authors should take special care to make all mathematical expressions legible. Do not give derivations that are easily found in the literature; merely cite the reference.

EDICS POLICY: All submissions must be classified by the author with an EDICS selected from the EDICS (Editors' Information Classification Scheme) category list published in each issue. The EDICS category should appear on the first page--i.e., the title and abstract page--of the manuscript.

COPYRIGHT: It is the policy of the IEEE to own the copyright to the technical contributions it publishes on behalf of the interests of the IEEE, its authors, and their employers, and to facilitate the appropriate reuse of this material by others. To comply with United States copyright law, authors are required to sign an IEEE Copyright Form before publication. This form (a copy of which appears in issues of the Transactions) returns to authors and their employers full rights to reuse their material for their own purposes. Authors must provide a signed copy of this form with the submitted manuscript.

FINAL MANUSCRIPT IN ELECTRONIC FORM: If a manuscript is accepted for publication, the author will be asked to supply the final copy electronically by using templates provided by IEEE and employing either TeX/LaTeX or MS Word. Instructions for submitting an accepted, finalized paper in electronic form will be provided to the author at the time of notification of the decision to publish.

PAGE CHARGES: Upon acceptance of a manuscript for publication, the author(s) or his/her/their company or institution will be asked to pay a charge of $110 per page to cover part of the cost of publication. This charge will apply to the first eight published pages of the manuscript. Upon payment of the page charges for the first eight pages, the author(s) will be entitled to 100 free, black-and-white reprints (without covers).

MANDATORY PAGE CHARGES: The author(s) or his/her/their company or institution will be billed $220 per each page in excess of the first eight published pages. These are mandatory charges and the author(s) will be held responsible for them. Payment of these charges is not negotiable or voluntary, and the author(s)'s agreement to publish his/her/their manuscript in the Transactions implies acceptance of these requirements. The Publisher holds the right to withhold publication of this manuscript or of any future manuscript from the author(s) if this charge is not honored. To avoid incurring these charges, the author(s) are strongly advised to practice economy in the original manuscript submission and restraint in preparation of the final manuscript following peer review.

COLOR CHARGES: Color reproduction is expensive and all charges for color are the responsibility of the author(s). In deciding whether to have figures reproduced in color or in black-and-white, the following estimates should be considered. There will be a charge of $125 for each figure; this charge may be subject to change without notification. In addition, there are printing preparation charges which may be estimated as follows:

Color reproductions on four or fewer pages of the manuscript: a total of approximately $1000; color reproductions on five pages through eight pages: a total of approximately $2100; color reproductions on nine through 12 pages: a total of approximately $3200, and so on. Remember that, like overlength pages, payment of fees for color reproduction is not negotiable or voluntary, and the author(s)'s agreement to publish his/her/their manuscript in the Transactions implies acceptance of these requirements.
