Included are techniques for practical control and signal processing, factory automation, fault detection and diagnosis, instrumentation, modeling and simulation, motion control, powers systems, robotics systems, sensors, and actuators, measurement and testing, used of neural nets, use of fuzzy logic and artificial intelligence in industrial systems.

Instructions to Authors
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics is published bimonthly. Its scope encompasses the applications of electronics, controls and communications, instrumentation and computational intelligence for the enhancement of industrial and manufacturing systems and processes. Included are power electronics and drive control techniques, system control and signal processing, fault detection and diagnosis, power systems, instrumentation, measurement and testing, modeling and simulation, motion control, robotics, sensors and actuators, implementation of neural nets, fuzzy logic, and artificial intelligence in industrial systems, factory automation, communication, and computer networks.

Manuscripts submitted for consideration should report on new results. Authors should pay particular attention to documenting their work in relationship to the known literature, and should limit the paper length to less than six TRANSACTION pages without impairing quality.

Readers are encouraged to submit Letters to Editor. Letters typically summarize important results to be published later at greater length. They may contain remarks on, or extension to, material already published, or problem challenges. Letters may get published with preference. They will undergo the same review process as full papers to maintain equal quality.

Submitted material must be declared not being copyrighted, published, submitted, or presented elsewhere, unless explicit notice to the contrary is given.

All papers will be reviewed, and results will be forwarded to the author. When a paper is accepted for publication, the author will be asked to furnish the text of the final manuscript on a disk, as well as two paper copies; the originals of all figures and tables; a list of figure captions; a signed Copyright form, and a biography and personal photograph of each author.

TOP Submitting a Manuscript
Send four copies of your manuscript to the Editor, according to the following instructions:

  1. Not more than 18 pages, single-sided, single-column, double-spaced using 12-point font.
  2. Not more than 12 figures or tables, accompanied by a separate list of figure and table captions.
  3. Original illustrations not to exceed 22 x 30 cm (8-1/2 x 11 in), to be legible after 50% reduction in size.
  4. Include an abstract of about 150 words. The abstract should indicate the subject and scope of the paper and summarize the author's conclusions, so as to be a useful document in an information retrieval system.
  5. Include appropriate indexing terms (keywords). These may be selected from an IEEE Thesaurus available as an auto response mail from keywords@ieee.org.

TOP Submitting a Letter to the Editor
Same as above, but with the manuscript limited to 5 pages, 3 figures, and the abstract length to 50 words; no author's photograph.

TOP Electronic Form
Accepted papers may be submitted on a disc or tape.

  1. Note down the operating system and word processor used on your disk/tape (e.g. DOS/WordPerfect). In the case of Unix media, the method of extraction (i.e. tar, bar, dump) is important.
  2. The hardcopy must match the disk/tape exactly.
  3. The disk/tape must be labeled with file name(s) relating to the manuscript.
  4. Do not include program files.
  5. Include a copy a flat ASCII version.
While most word processors are acceptable, TEX and LATEX are preferred. They enable the preservation of most of the information. An IEEE LATEX style file, IEEEtran.sty, is obtainable by authors who e-mail a request to help@ep.ieee.org. Include all macros (\def) that are required to produce your document; IEEE TRANSACTIONS style dictates a 21-pica (3.5-in) column width.
IEEE will accept:
  1. any IBM-PC (or 100% compatible) disk format: 5.25-in/360k/1.2 Mb-3.5-in/720/1.44 Mb (DS/DD, DS/HD, DS/QD, etc.);
  2. Macintosh disk format (low and high densities);
  3. 0.25-in magnetic tape cartridges (Unix: tar, bar, dump);
  4. 3.5-in floppy disk (Unix: tar, bar, dump);
  5. 8-mm tape cartridges (Unix: tar, bar, dump).
If in doubt, don't hesitate to ask help@ep.ieee.org

TOP Page Charges
After a paper has been accepted, the author's organization will be requested to pay a page charge per printed page to cover part of the publication cost. The author will receive 100 reprints without covers if the page charge is honored.

TOP Copyright
It is the policy of IEEE to own the copyright to the technical contributions it publishes on behalf of the interests of the IEEE, its authors, and their employers, and to facilitate the appropriate reuse of this material by others. To comply with the U.S. Copyright Law, authors are required to sign an IEEE copyright transfer form before publication. This form returns to authors and their employer full rights to reuse their material for their own purposes.
All manuscripts submitted for publication should be original. Manuscripts published or under consideration for publication elsewhere will not be considered. Manuscripts published in conference proceedings with limited circulation may be considered for publication in IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics if they are exceptionally important or contain substantial new results.

TOP References
References substantiating points made in the text or citing important and relevant work should appear in a separate section at the end of the article. References should be contemporary, relevant, and essential. Citations in text are indicated by Arabic superscripts at the end of the author(s) name(s), numbered according to the order of citation. A referenced article should contain all authors' names, title of the article, name of the publication, volume and number, month and year of publication, and inclusive page numbers. A referenced book should list author name(s), title of the book, publisher, place of publication, year of publication, and specific chapters or pages cited. For example:

In general, references should be publicly available, such as articles in standard journals and open conference proceedings. Avoid using internal technical reports and theses unless they are easily accessible. Articles should contain no more than 12 references except for unusual circumstances that clearly justify using more.

TOP Illustrations
All illustrations must be cited in text and have numbers and captions. Graphs should show only the coordinate axes (or at most the major grid lines) to avoid a dense, hard-to-read illustration. The illustration should be readable at two columns' width (114mm or 4.5 inches). Submit photocopies for the initial manuscript review. Original illustrations should be submitted with the final accepted version. If you have screen shots, please submit them in electronic format (.EPS, Sun PS, TIFF, .PCX, MacPaint, Pict, Windows .BMP, or GEM.IMG). Color photographs should be submitted as slides or transparencies or as TIFF files. Black-and-white prints should be glossy, have good contrast, and measure at least 7*10 cm (3 by 5 inches). Color illustrations will usually be reproduced in black and white.

TOP Biography
Manuscripts accepted for publication should be accompanied by a brief biographical sketch. Biographical information should be stated in the following order: current position, prior significant professional experience, technical interests, education, awards and important activities, and professional affiliations.

TOP Review and editing
After a manuscript has been refereed, and the author has been notified of acceptance by the Editor-in-Chief, staff of professional editors help the author turn the manuscript into a concise, well-worded magazine article. This process includes copy editing (grammar, punctuation, and capitalization), style editing (conformity to Industrial Electronics Society house style), and content editing (flow, meaning, clarity, directness, and organization).
