About the journal

Aims and scope
Ichthyological Research is an official journal of the Ichthyological Society of Japan and is published quarterly in February, May, August, and November. Ichthyological Research primarily publishes research papers on original work, either descriptive or experimental, that advances the understanding of the diversity of fishes. Ichthyological Research strives to cover all aspects of fish biology, including taxonomy, systematics, evolution, biogeography, ecology, ethology, genetics, morphology, and physiology.

Ichthyological Research also publishes timely reviews and commentary on recent progress in active areas of research on fish biology.

General
"Ichthyological Research" publishes four types of papers: reviews, full papers, short reports, and comments. We solicit articles on biological study related to fishes, including taxonomy, phylogeny, morphology, distribution, ecology, ethology, physiology, ontogeny, and genetics. Range extensions, teratological notes, and listings of species inhabiting a given geographic area will not be published unless they contribute significantly to the understanding of biological processes. Contribution to the journal is open to members and non-members. Non-members, however, will only receive half the number of free printed pages for full papers and short reports as members.

Manuscript submission
Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities   tacitly or explicitly  at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.
Permissions
Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.
Online submission
Authors should submit their manuscripts online. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times. Please follow the hyperlink  "Submit online"   on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

Copyright transfer
Authors transfer the copyright to their article to the Ichthyological Society of Japan effective if and when the article is accepted for publication. The copyright covers the exclusive and unlimited rights to reproduce and distribute the article in any form of reproduction (printing, electronic media, or any other form); it also covers translation rights for all languages and countries. For U.S. authors the copyright is transferred to the extent transferable.

Authors of a new taxon
A new scientific name for a taxon proposed by one, two, or three authors will be accepted. New names proposed by more than three authors are not acceptable.

Registration of molecular sequence
New molecular sequences in manuscripts must be deposited in the appropriate international data bank. The data base accession number must be included in the manuscript. For taxonomical studies based on molecular sequences, the source specimen of molecular information should be deposited in the appropriate institution.

Manuscripts
Times Roman or Times New Roman(+ Symbol) font should be used in the text and tables.
Pages and lines in the text must be numbered consecutively through the entire text.
The file name must include the corresponding author's name.
Manuscripts must be written in English and typed in double-line spacing (25x28 lines per page) with 25-mm margins. Short reports should not exceed four printed pages, including references, illustrations, and tables. An average printed page contains approximately 6200 characters including spaces, or about 1000 words

Please organize your manuscript as follows:

Title page, including title of paper; all authors' full names, institutions, and addresses at which the research was conducted (plus current affiliation(s), if applicable); address to which proofs should be sent, including e-mail address and phone and fax number; suggested running head within six words; type of paper; number of text pages, number of figures, and number of tables. Authorship of scientific names should be included in the title only when nomenclatural problems are involved.

Abstract (no more than 100 words for short reports and 350 words for other papers) and 3-5 key words.

The text of the paper should be divided into the following sections, if appropriate: Introduction; Materials and methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgments; References; Tables; Figure legends. Author(s) should use bold-face for the following headings: Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, References, and Acknowledgments. Subheadings in the Materials and methods section should be italic; those in both Results and Discussion should be bold. All contributors must pay attention to the manuscript form by checking the articles published in the recent issues. Please include, at the end of the acknowledgments, a declaration that any experiments comply with the current laws of the country in which they were performed. The author is also required to pay attention to the "Guidelines for the use of fishes in research"  published by the Ichthyological Society of Japan in 2003 (http://www.fish-isj.jp/english/guidelines.html). The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to reject manuscripts that do not comply with the above-mentioned requirements. The author will be held responsible for false statements or for failure to fulfill the above mentioned requirements.

Footnotes should be avoided whenever possible.

Generic and specific names should be italicized.

Common abbreviations and symbols such as m, mm, cm, g, ºC (for Celsius), and % should be used. Measurements should be given in metric units.

References
Cite references in the text by name and year in parentheses. Some examples:
Negotiation research spans many disciplines (Thompson 1990).
This result was later contradicted (Becker and Seligman 1996).
This effect has been widely studied (Abbott 1991; Medvec et al. 1993; Barakat et al. 1995; Kelso and Smith 1998).

The list of References should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication. Personal communications and unpublished works should only be mentioned in the text. Do not use footnotes or endnotes as a substitute for a reference list.

Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last names of the first author of each work.

Tables and figures
Tables must be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals and submitted on separate pages from the text. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript lowercase letters.

Illustrations must be restricted to the minimum needed to clarify the text. All figures (photographs, graphs, or diagrams) should be cited in the text and numbered consecutively throughout. Figure legends must be brief, self-sufficient explanations of the illustrations. Submit all figures in their preferred sized when printed on separate pages or sheets and do not integrate them into the text. The Editor reserves the right to reduce or enlarge illustrations. Inscriptions should be legible, and appropriately scaled to the size of the drawing. Magnification should be indicated by scale bars. Figure parts should be denoted by lowercase letters. If illustrations are supplied with uppercase labeling, lowercase letters will still be used in the figure legends and citations

Online publication of color illustrations is free of charge. For color in the print version, authors will be expected to make a contribution towards the extra costs (110 000 yen for the first and 60 000 yen for each additional page). Otherwise the figures will be printed in black and white. Please note that, in such cases, it is authors' responsibility to prepare figures to be illustrative enough to convey the necessary information even after they are converted into black and white.

Electronic supplementary material
Electronic Supplementary Material (ESM) for a paper will be published in the electronic edition of this journal and the material provided is submitted in electronic form together with the final version of your manuscript after acceptance.

ESM may consist of:
information that cannot be printed: animations, video clips, sound recordings (.avi, .mpeg, animated GIFs, or any other common file format);
information that is more convenient in electronic form: sequences, spectral data, etc. large quantities of original data that relate to the paper, e.g., additional tables, large numbers of illustrations (color and black & white), etc.

Legends must be brief, self-sufficient explanations of the ESM. ESM is to be numbered and referred to as S1, S2, etc.

Excess-page charges
Note that papers that exceed 25 printed pages for reviews, six printed pages for full papers, or two printed pages for short reports and others are subject to page charges. Non-members receive 25 free printed pages for reviews, but are limited to three free printed pages for full papers, and one free printed page for short reports and others. Currently, 6000 yen is charged for each page in excess of the limit.

After Acceptance
During the production phase the following issues need to be clarified and you will receive the article's proofs.
Open Choice
In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription-based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer's online platform SpringerLink. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles. Springer Open Choice

Offprints
Offprints can be ordered by the corresponding author.

Proof reading
The purpose of the proof is to check for typesetting or conversion errors and the completeness and accuracy of the text, tables and figures. Substantial changes in content, e.g., new results, corrected values, title and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the Editor.

Online First
The article will be published online after receipt of the corrected proofs. This is the official first publication citable with the DOI. After release of the printed version, the paper can also be cited by issue and page numbers. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.
