About the journal
The ICES Journal of Marine Science publishes articles, short communications, and critical reviews that contribute to our scientific understanding of marine systems and the impact of human activities. The Journal serves as a foundation for scientific advice across the broad spectrum of management and conservation issues related to the marine environment. Oceanography, marine habitats, living resources, and related management topics constitute the key elements of papers eligible for publication. Integrated studies that bridge gaps between traditional disciplines are particularly welcome. The scope of the Journal has been broadened to include economic, social, and public administration studies to the extent that they are directly related to management of the seas and are of general interest to marine scientists. Proceedings of ICES-sponsored symposia constitute an integral part of the Journal and observe the standards set for regular papers.
Research Areas Include: BR Population biology and ecology of fish and shellfish BR Marine mammals and invertebrates BR Stock assessment BR Biological oceanography BR Environmental processes BR Physical and chemical oceanography relevant to the dynamics and productivity of marine resources

Names of vessels are printed thus "Clione" dates as 19 October 1973. All measurements must be given in the metric system. Abbreviations should follow the ISO Systeme international d'unities (SI). See Nature Vol. 216 pp. 1272-1274 (1967) for details. Common abbreviations in use are: kg, g, mg, (mu)g, m, cm, mm, (mu)m, l (litre), ml, d (day), h (hour), min, s, ?C, kcal, cal, Hz. Use also m(squared), m(cubed), cm(squared), cm(cubed) etc. Use the -1 notation, not the solidus, e.g. ms(to the power of -1) not m/s. Acronyms are written ICES, FAO etc (without stops). Greek letters and other symbols should be annotated in the margin. Mathematical papers are welcome. Please annotate your paper if mathematical expressions require special treatment. No commas should appear in figures either for decimals or large numbers. A point is used for the former, spaces for the latter (2.3; 1 253 658). The official rules are used for zoological and botanical nomenclature. Genus and species names only should be underlined for italics. Give the authority for species used in the paper when they are first mentioned.
The text should as a rule be subheaded Introduction, Materials, Methods, Results, and Discussion. An informative Abstract in English must be provided which should recapitulate the principal facts and conclusions of the paper. The Abstract should be intelligible without reference to the text, and must contain sufficient information to be useful when accompanied by its journal and author citation. Long papers may be provided with a summary of conclusions if the author so wishes. The first section of each text, i.e. the section before the Introduction, must be arranged in the following order: Title, Author, Citation, Abstract, Key Words, Author's name and postal address. Please consult the first pages of the papers in this issue for the actual lay-out to be followed and the "hierarchy" of headings.
Title and Key Words Please use as concise a title as possible but note that Key Words are to be inserted after the Abstract.
Text citations are given as: Smith (1964) or (Smith, 1964). When there are three or more authors use Smith et al. References should be listed in alphabetical order as follows:
a) For Papers Published in a Journal Howlett,G., and Jamieson, A. 1971. A system of muscle esterase variants in the sprat (Sprattus sprattus) Rapports et Proc?s-Verbaux des R?unions du Conseil International pour l'Exporation de la Mer, 161:45-47.
Please note that journal titles should be written out in full.
b)For Books Diamond, J. 1971. The Mauthner cell. In Fish physiology, 5: Sensory systems and electric organs, pp 265-346. Ed. by W.S. Hoar and D. J Randall. Academic Press, NY. 600pp.
c) Documents Documents presented to the Statutory Meetings of ICES should be quoted by the code number as it appears on the paper itself. After 1966 this would be, e.g. ICES CM 1967/C: 14, 22pp.
For 1965 and earlier, the practice varied.
Illustrations Illustrations should be in finished form suitable for reproduction. Avoid illustrations that are too large and so difficult to send by post. Normally A4 size (295 x 210mm) is sufficient.
If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier Science will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, over and above the single free page allowed at present, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier Science after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork.
Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to 'grey scale' (for the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations.
Drawings Composite drawings may be separated in to their components, each on an A4 sheet. There is no need to apply lettering or numbering to a line drawing; lettering should be written on a photocopy, to be inserted later on the original by the Press.
Photographs Photographs should be glossy prints with strong contrast, trimmed to exclude unnecessary background.
Figures Figures should be planned to fit the proportions of the Journal pages, and details should be easily discriminated at the final size. The author's name, the number of the illustration, Fig. 1 etc..., should be indicated on the reverse as well as the orientation if necessary, e.g. Top. A short explicit legend must be provided for each figures. All such legends should be collected together in one section of the manuscript.
Referees Authors may suggest, if they wish, the names and addresses of two referees although the Editors will not be bound to use such referees.
Authors receive 50 offprints free of charge. Additional offprints may be ordered at extra cost.
All back issues up to and including Volume 47 may be ordered from the ICES Secretariat, Pal'gade 2-4, DK -161, Copenhagen, Denmark. Later volumes may be ordered from Academic Press.
For permission to reproduce material from the ICES ICES Journal of Marine Science, please apply to the General Secretary.
Author enquiries Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted articles, and set up email alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier Author Gateway (http://authors.elsevier.com). Full details of electronic submission of artwork can be obtained from http:/authors.elsevier.com. Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
