About the journal
Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) is an international and interdisciplinary journal for the publication of original research in hydrology, viewed as a separate geoscience alongside the atmospheric, ocean and solid earth sciences. HESS serves not only the community of scientific hydrologists, but all geoscientists who wish to publish new findings on the interactions between hydrology and other physical, chemical and biological processes within the Earth System. HESS therefore encompasses:
- the physical and chemical processes in the cycling of continental water in all its phases, including dissolved and particulate matter, at all scales from the microprocesses of soil water to the global processes of hydroclimatology, as well as those biological processes that interact significantly with the water cycle, such as, e.g., transpiration by vegetation, carbon and nutrient cycling.
- the spatial and temporal characteristics of the global water (solid, liquid and vapour) and related budgets, in all compartments of the Earth System (atmosphere, oceans and continents) including water masses, residence times, interfacial fluxes, and pathways between compartments.
- the influences of human activity on all the processes, budgets and fluxes outlined above, particularly in relation to floods, droughts, desertification and other aspects of global change.
Instructions to Authors
1. General
Each manuscript should be prepared in accordance with the instructions given below, type-written, double-spaced, on one side of a page only, and with a 3-5 cm wide margin on the right. Four copies of the manuscript should be sent to the Managing Editor together with the full address for correspondence (including telephone, telefax, telex and e-mail number), and the names and full addresses of up to five potential referees not associated with the work.
All papers will undergo rigorous peer review by at least two competent colleagues prior to their acceptance for publication. These signed reviews will be available in the editorial office in the final assessment of the material submitted. Thereafter, authors will be invited to take account of reviewers' comments or criticisms and to submit two hard copies only of a revised manuscript plus a floppy disc in WordPerfect 5.1 or Word 6.0 with the figures and diagrams on a floppy in EPS (encapsulated PostScript).
There are no page nor handling charges, 25 free offprints and additional offprints may be ordered when returning the final manuscripts.
2. Language
Papers should be clear, concise, and written in English. They must fully conform to the organization and style of the journal, with correct English spelling and good sentence structure. Correct English is the responsibility of the author, although the manuscripts will be copy edited prior to publication.
While the Editors will attempt to give assistance with English presentation to non-native English speakers, responsibility for what is published after correction of page proofs by the authors lies entirely with the authors and neither the Editors nor EGS accept any responsibility for opinions or material presented in any paper. Papers which are acceptable on scientific grounds shall not be barred because the Editor dislikes the style of writing. While some styles are easier to comprehend than others, HESS has scientific, rather than literary aspirations. However, a paper seems less contrived if authors desist from using the first person "I", "we" and "our" in written, as opposed to oral, presentation.
3. Manuscript pages
The pages should be placed in the following order: title page, abstract, text, appendices, acknowledgements, references, tables, figure captions and figures. The pages should be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page.
- Title page
- The first page should bear:
- The title (must be concise but informative).
- The initial(s) and name(s) of the author(s).
- The full institutional addresses of all authors.
- The address to which proofs should be sent.
- The name of the author to whom offprint requests should be sent.
- Abstract
- The abstract should be complete in itself and be 3-4% of the length of the paper. It should be suitable for separate publication in an abstract journal and state the main results clearly; a mere table of contents should be avoided.
- Key words
- Should be listed at the end of the abstract.
- Sections
- The headings of all sections, including introduction, results, discussions or summary must be identified clearly. Three levels of sectioning are allowed, e.g. A, B and C.
- Appendices
- Appendices should be labeled with capital letters: Appendix A, Appendix B etc. Equations, figures and tables should be numbered as (A1), Fig. B5 or Table C6, respectively.
- Footnotes
- Footnotes should be avoided. However, if present, they should be numbered consecutively. Footnotes to tables should be marked by lowercase letters.
- Units
- The metric system is mandatory and, wherever possible, SI units should be used.
4. Mathematical symbols and formulae
All characters should be typed. To prevent confusion, similar-looking (or rarely used) symbols should be distinguished clearly and, if necessary, explained in the margin. Please avoid possible confusion between letters and numbers (L and I, I and 1, o and zero) and between Greek letters and Roman letters (nu, upsilon and v, rho and p, kappa, chi and x, epsilon and E), Etc.
- Equations
- Equations should be numbered sequentially with arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-hand side. If too long, split them accordingly.
5. Figures
All figures, whether photographs, graphs or diagrams, should be submitted on separate sheets.
- Line drawings
- Please include one set of good-quality (original) prints in the manuscripts and copies in the copies. The inscriptions and labelings should be clearly legible.
- Halftone illustrations
- Please include well-contrasted photographic prints, trimmed at right angles, in the finally revised manuscripts. Colour illustrations will be accepted; however, the authors will be expected to make a contribution towards the extra cost for inclusion in the final publication (approx. GBP 390,- for the first and GBP 53,- for each additional page).
- Legends or figure captions
- Each illustration should be provided with a concise but descriptive legend. Phrases such as "For explanation, see text" should be avoided.
6. Tables
Each table should be typed on a separate page and numbered sequentially with arabic numerals. Units should appear at the top of the column.
7. References
Only works that are cited in the text and that have been accepted for publication should be listed alphabetically at the end of the paper under the first author's name. Two or more works by two authors should be listed alphabetically according to the second author's name. Works by three or more authors should be listed chronologically. If there is more than one work by the same author or team of authors in the same year, a, b, c, etc. is added to the year both in the text and in the list of references. Internationally accepted abbreviations of journal titles should be used. First and last page numbers must be given.
Citations in the text should be by author(s) and year. Where there are two authors, both should be named; when a work with more than two authors is mentioned, only the first author's name plus "et al." need to be given.
