Instructions to Authors

Gynecologic Oncology provides an international archive devoted to the publication of clinical and investigative articles that concern tumors of the female reproductive tract. Reports of investigations relating to the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases and their etiology and histogenesis will be considered. Such contributions may come from any of the disciplines related to this field of interest, including gynecologic surgery, radiotherapy, pathology, cytology, endocrinology, chemotherapy, immunology, genetics, cell kinetics, cell biology, and epidemiology. All aspects of scholarship related to tumors of this region are welcome, with clarity, quality, and originality the chief criteria for acceptance.

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be written in English and should be submitted in quadruplicate (one original and three photocopies), including four sets of good-quality figures, to

Gynecologic Oncology
Editorial Office

San Diego, CA 92101-4495, USA
Telephone: (619) 699-6342
Fax: (619) 699-6700
E-mail to:gyn@elsevier.com

There are no submission fees or page charges. Each manuscript should be accompanied by a cover letter outlining the basic findings of the paper and their significance. The cover letter should include the complete title and category of the manuscript submitted (i.e., Tribute, Editorial, Original Article, Review Article, Case Report, or Correspondence). Written notification of a change in the designated corresponding author, address, telephone or fax number should be directed promptly to the Editorial Office.

Electronic Submission. Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk, e-mail, or FTP (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc), each time a new version is submitted. Submission as an e-mail attachment is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes (gyn@elsevier.com). Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic file must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.

Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that no substantial portion of the study has been published or is under consideration for publication elsewhere and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out. Manuscripts that do not meet the general criteria or standards for publication in Gynecologic Oncology will be immediately returned to the authors, without detailed review.

Copyright and Permissions. Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, see http://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided after acceptance.

If material from other copyrighted works is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com.

Authorship. The number of authors listed on the manuscript should not exceed seven for regular articles (except in the case of cooperative group or multicenter trials, in which the maximum number is 10); five for Review Articles or Case Reports; and three for Correspondence. To determine authorship of manuscripts submitted to Gynecologic Oncology, please use the following criteria provided by the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (available from Secretariat Office, American College of Physicians, Independence Mall West, Sixth Street at Race, Philadelphia, PA 19106-1572). Each author should have participated actively and sufficiently in the paper to take public responsibility for the content. Authorship should be based only on substantial contributions to (a) concept and design or analysis and interpretation of data and (b) drafting the manuscript or revising it critically for important intellectual content and on (c) final approval of the version to be published. All conditions must be met.

Conflict of Interest. Gynecologic Oncology requires full disclosure of any financial relationships between authors and commercial companies whose products are the subject of the submitted manuscript. Statements regarding a company's support for the research reported should be made on the title page. Other relationships that might represent a potential conflict of interest, such as ownership, stock holdings, equity interests, or consultant activities, should be detailed in the manuscript cover letter to the Editor.

Human and Nonhuman Experimentation. Reports on human experimentation will be reviewed in accordance with the precepts established by the Helsinki Declaration. Such reports must include in the Materials and Methods section of the manuscript a statement that the human investigations were performed after approval by a local Human Investigations Committee. Reports of human experimentation must also include a statement that informed consent was obtained from each subject or subject's guardian. Reports of nonhuman animal experimentation must state in the Materials and Methods section of the manuscript that the guidelines for the care and use of the animals approved by the local institution were followed. The type of nonhuman animals or other species used in an investigation must be named in the title, abstract, and Materials and Methods section of the manuscript.

Types of Articles

Original Research Report. Full-length report of an original basic or clinical investigation.

Case Report. A brief description of up to three cases of a particular condition that is unusual and also provides new insights into diagnosis or clinical management. The body of the manuscript should be written as concisely as possible. A maximum of 10 references should be required for this type of publication. Case Reports should include the following identifiable sections: Introduction, Case Report(s), and Discussion. A structured abstract based on these sections is required.

Review Article. A comprehensive and scholarly review of the literature relating to an important basic or clinical subject, accompanied by critical analysis and leading to reasonable conclusions.

Letter to the Editor. Letters to the Editor may consist of either of two types of correspondence: (1) a question or challenge to article published recently in the journal or (2) a brief communication describing a preliminary research report, an unusual case, or a review. Letters to the Editor should be limited to no more than three double-spaced typewritten pages and a maximum of five references.

Editorial. Commentary on an original article published in the same issue or an opinion or perspective on a specific topic. Editorials are generally written by the Editor or Editorial Board members or are solicited by the Editor; however, unsolicited Editorials may occasionally be considered and published with the approval of the Editor.

Commentary. A brief essay expressing opinions, experiences, or perspectives of relevance to gynecologic cancer.

Tribute. A submission that highlights the accomplishments of distinguished individuals for their contributions to the field of gynecologic cancer.

Rapid Publications. A brief, definitive report of highly significant and timely findings in the field. At the discretion of the editor, these submissions receive very rapid review and, if acceptable, are published within an average of 12 weeks from receipt. Manuscripts should be no longer than 12 double-spaced typewritten pages, containing a structured Abstract of approximately 100 words, a one-paragraph introduction, an abbreviated Materials and Methods section, Results, and a concise Discussion section. A maximum of 20 references and 4 items for the display of data (any combination figures and tables) will be allowed.

Preparation of Manuscript

Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch or A4 white paper. Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:

The Title Page (p. 1) should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers). Footnotes to the title should be indicated by superscript Arabic numerals and typed double-spaced at the bottom of the title page. Do not use footnotes in the text; incorporate this information in the body of the article.

The Abstract (p. 2) for an original research report, review article, and rapid publication should contain up to 250 words structured under the following headings: Objective(s), Methods, Results, and Conclusion(s). For Case Reports, the upper limit is 125 words, structured under the headings Background, Case, and Conclusion(s). These sections reflect the purpose of the paper or the hypothesis that is being tested, the study design, the outcome of the study and statistical significance if appropriate, and the significance of the findings, respectively. Abstracts are not required for Tributes, Editorials, Commentaries, or Letters to the Editor. Keywords should be listed immediately after the abstract.

The Introduction should be as concise as possible, without subheadings.

Materials and methods should be sufficiently detailed to enable the experiments to be reproduced.

Results and Discussion may be combined and may be organized into subheadings.

Acknowledgments should be brief and should precede the references.

References should be cited in the text by Arabic numerals in square brackets, [1], [2], etc., in order of appearance and follow the Vancouver Style (http://www.library.uwa.edu.au/guides/citingsources/vancouver.html). Only articles that have been published or are in press should be included in the references. Unpublished results or personal communications should be cited as such in the text.

Article Pr¨¦cis. On a separate page following the references please include a brief pr¨¦cis of the article in 25 words or less, which will be included beneath the article title in the table of contents of the journal.

Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, and indicate the top and the authors on the back of each figure. Lettering on drawings should be professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and must be large enough to withstand appropriate reduction for publication. Short descriptive captions should be double-spaced on a separate page. Color Figures. Illustrations in color can be accepted only if the authors defray the cost. Mounted color figures must be submitted on paper or flexible board due to the nature of the reproduction process. Please visit our Web site at http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork.

Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title typed directly above and with essential footnotes below. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and proofs should be returned promptly. Authors will be charged for alterations that exceed 10% of the total cost of composition.
