About the journal

Genetics Selection Evolution is an international peer-reviewed journal dedicated to original research on all facets of Genetics and Selection in farm and experimental animals, as well as in wild populations and related species. With the huge recent increase in amount and variety of genetic data, future advances in Animal Genetics will require even more than before the coming together and the successful integration of varied results and techniques. GSE will contribute to these new developments by publishing relevant research papers, reviews and letters to the editor.

The journal accepts basic, applied and methodological works which will help understand, maintain and make better use of animal genetic variability. It publishes results at all levels of study, from the gene to the quantitative trait, and from the individual to the population, the breed or the species. Both the biological approach, from Molecular Genetics to Animal Sciences, and the mathematical one, from Population Genetics to Statistics, are welcome. Specific areas of interest include: gene identification, mapping, QTLs and markers, functional genomics, cytogenetics, genetic diversity of populations and breeds, genetic evaluation, applied and experimental selection, statistical methodology of quantitative and mixed inheritance

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for authors are also printed in the first issue of each volume.

The journal Genetics Selection Evolution publishes original articles, review articles, short notes, forums and letters to the editor in English and in French.

The publication of the text and black and white figures is free of charge.

GENERAL PRESENTATION

Text should be in the Times font (12) and should be double-spaced, with margins of at least 4 cm at the top, bottom and sides for editor¡¯s comments. The lines and the pages should be numbered.

The layout should be presented as follows: title page, abstract in the language of the article, title and abstract in English if the article is written in French, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, references, figure captions, tables, figures.

The total length of the manuscript should not exceed 25 pages including tables and figures. Section headings should be numbered following the international numbering system (1.; 1.1.; 1.1.1., etc.). Tables and figures, with their captions, should not appear in the text, but be placed together on separate sheets at the end of the manuscript. Abbreviations should be punctuated. Uppercase letters should be accented; small capitals should not be used.

Title page

The title page should include the following: the title of the article, which should be concise but explicit, the surname and forenames (in full) of each author, the department and institution where the study was carried out, telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address of the corresponding author (this author being identified by an asterisk), a short title (running head) of no more than 45 characters, including spaces.

Abstract

The abstract (not more than 200 words) should clearly state the major results of the work, and it should be in a suitable form for abstracting services. Paragraphs, footnotes, references, cross-references to figures or tables and undefined abbreviations should be avoided.

Keywords

Up to five keywords should be provided in English, and in French if the article is written in French, to assist the reader and facilitate information retrieval. Keywords may be taken from the title, abstract or text. The plural form and uppercase letters should be avoided. Keywords should be written in bold lowercase letters, separated by slashes.

Parameters and units

Only ISO symbols, always written in italic, should be used for the various parameters. SI units should be used throughout, and should always be written in Roman and separated from the numerical value by a space (whatever the language). The m in mg or mm is always in Roman. The symbol for litre is L and that for minute is min. For temperatures, please note the use of C and F but K. Multiples and submultiples should be standard. As the Angström (1 Å = 10-10 m) is not an SI unit, it should be replaced by the nanometer (1 nm = 10-9 m) or by the picometer (1 pm = 10-12 m): 1 Å = 0.1 nm = 100 pm. Multiple units should be written with negative superscripts (for example, 25 mg ).

Genes, loci, mutations and markers

The symbols used to name genes, loci, mutations and markers should be written in italics in the text, figures and tables.

Equations and numbers

Equations should be carefully typed. Those that are referred to in the text [in the form: equation (1), for example] should be numbered using Arabic numerals, in brackets, on the right-hand margin. Ponctuations should be used at the end of an equation. Particular care should be taken to distinguish between the number zero (0) and the letter O; the number one (1) and the letter l (l), the Roman letter v and the Greek letter nu (n). The decimal logarithm should be written 'log' and the natural log 'ln'. The abbreviation of the exponential function is a Roman e (for example, ex) or exp (for example, exp (u2 + n )). In expressions of the type dxdt, the letter d (derivative function) is always written in Roman, whereas the physical parameter (x or t) is always in italics. Numbers are written in numerals when they are followed by units, these being represented by their SI symbols (10% but a few percent). In numerals, each group of three digits should be separated by a space (except for dates and postal codes). In English, a decimal point is used instead of a comma.

References

In the reference list, the references appear in alphabetical order, preceded by an Arabic numeral enclosed in square brackets. The authors' names are listed in alphabetical order, and in chronological order for each author. If there is more than one author, the order is as follows: publications of the same author with one co-author, in alphabetical order of the second author, and in chronological order; publications of the author with more than one co-author, in chronological order.

The references are cited in the text by the corresponding number enclosed in square brackets.

All entries in the reference list must correspond to references in the text and vice versa. When authors are cited in the text (within a phrase and not just between brackets), the spelling of the authors' names must be exactly the same as in the reference list.

The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the rules of Biosciences Information Service (Biosis) . Words for which no abbreviation is given should be written in full.

Examples of the layout and punctuation to be used in the references are given below:

Illustrations (figures and tables)

Illustrations (one original and two good copies) should be numbered in Arabic numerals for figures and Roman numerals for tables, and should be referred as Figure 1 or Table I in the text, Fig. 1 or Tab. I in brackets. The numbering of the tables must not be combined with that of the figures. Lettering (symbols, numbers, etc.) should not differ from figure to figure and should be of sufficient size to remain legible after reduction (letters 1¨C2 mm high after reduction). Figures should be presented in the form of drawings on drawing or tracing paper or as sharp glossy prints. Half-tones should contain good contrast and should be originals (i.e. not already reproduced); line drawings should have a white background. Photographs should be presented in the form of plates to be reproduced without reduction (maximum size 12 ¡Á 19 cm or 16 ¡Á 24 cm for "full page" illustrations. The lettering (height 1¨C2 mm) should not be placed any closer to the edges than 1 cm. The figure captions should be explicit so that the illustrations are comprehensible without reference to the text. The author should indicate the ideal position of tables and figures in the margins but both tables and figures should be presented together on a separate sheet at the end of the paper. Electronic figures should be placed in different files than the text. They should be saved in EPS, PS or TIFF format using standard fonts and high resolution. In the paper version of the journal, figures are in black and white (for colour, authors should make a contribution, prices on request), but they appear in colour in the electronic version. In case scanning is necessary, please provide good-quality originals for your figures.

Tables should not exceed 84 characters per line (140 if in landscape format). The title of each table should be written above the corresponding table. Figures and tables published elsewhere cannot be accepted without the prior consent of the publisher and the author(s).

The Editorial Board retains the right of returning, before evaluation, manuscripts to authors who do not comply with these recommendations. The author is advised to keep one manuscript and a set of figures.

Electronic-only material

Electronic-only material is designed to provide supplementary information that is either too voluminous for printing or that is designed specifically for the Web, such as illustration in colour. Electronic-only material may include but is not restricted to: (Large) tables; Appendices; Programmes; Images; Videos; ...

If this period is exceeded, the galleys may be printed with the editor's corrections only. Should substantial changes in the original manuscript be requested (other than typographical errors), they will be made at the author's expense. The PDF file of the article will be provided free of charge to the corresponding author. An order form for reprints - and, if required, for the publication of colour figures - will accompany the proofs.

Copyright

As soon as the article is published, the author is considered to have transferred his rights to the publisher. Requests for reproduction should be sent to the latter.
