Instructions to Authors

Where to send the manuscript:

Manuscripts should initially be submitted to one of the Editors-in-Chief: Mr James Robb FRCS, Department of Orthopaedics, Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, EH9 1LF, UK; Tel: +44 (0) 131-536-4634; Fax: +44 (0) 131 536 0852; e-mail: j.e.robb@btinternet.com or Dr Freeman Miller MD, PO Box 3793, Alfred I. DuPont Institute, 1600 Rockland Rd, P.O. Box 269, Wilmington, DE 19899, USA; Tel: 00 1 302-651-5921; Fax: 00 1 302-651-5951; e-mail: fmiller@ravenet.com

Papers originating in the Americas should be sent directly to Dr. Miller, and all other papers should be sent to Dr. Robb.

The author should retain a copy for his or her own use. The Journal will not be responsible for manuscripts lost in the mail and the choice of Editor-in-Chief to which an author sends a manuscript, is left to the authors' discretion.

We welcome the submission of the intial manuscript in electronic format, as this can help us to speed up the peer-review process. Please send an electronic copy in the form of a CD or floppy disk.

Submissions:

Please submit THREE fully double-spaced copies of the whole article to one of the Editors-in-Chief. Each copy should include an abstract, illustrations, captions, tables and references and have TWO cover pages, one with complete details of the title, the source, the authors and an address, telephone/fax number and e-mail address for the corresponding author. The second cover page, which should show only the title and subtitle of the article, will be sent to referees. The text and figures should exclude all reference to the source of the work and the authors - this will be restored before publication.

Letters to Editors

Comments regarding articles published in the Journal are solicited and should be sent as "Letter to the Editor". Such letters are subject to editorial review. They should be brief and succinct. When a published article is subjected to comment or criticism, the authors of that article will be invited to write a letter or reply.

Preparation of the Manuscript

1. All publications will be in English. Authors whose 'first' language is not English should arrange for their manuscripts to be written in idiomatic English before submission. A concise style avoiding jargon is preferred.
2. Authors should supply up to five keywords that may be modified by the Editors.
3. An abstract not exceeding one paragraph of 250 words should appear at the beginning of each Article.
4. Acknowledgements should be included after the end of the Discussion and just before the References. Include external sources of support.
5. The text should be ready for setting in type and should be carefully checked for errors. Scripts should be typed double-spaced on one side of the paper only. Please do not underline anything, leave wide margins and number every sheet.
6. All illustrations should accompany the typescript, but not be inserted in the text. Refer to photographs, charts, and diagrams as 'figures' and number consecutively in order of appearance in the text. Substantive captions for each figure explaining the major point or points should be typed on a separate sheet.
7. Tables should be presented on separate sheets of paper and labelled consecutively but the captions should accompany the table.
8. Articles should not exceed 4,000 words (including the abstract).

Summary of Overall Arrangement of Manuscripts
You should arrange your contribution in the following order:

1. Two cover pages, one with complete details of the title, the source, and the authors full contact details; the second cover page, with only the title and subtitle of the article.
2. An abstract outlining the purpose, scope and conclusions of the paper.
3. The text suitably divided under headings. (frequently Introduction, Material or Patients, Methods, Results, Discussion will prove satisfactory)
4. Acknowledgements (if any.
5. References.
6. Tables with captions (each on a separate sheet).
7. Captions to illustrations (grouped on a separate sheet or sheets).
8. Illustrations, each on a separate sheet containing no text.

Illustrations

Authors must submit one original in the high gloss 5 by 7 inch size, and two additional high quality copies of all illustrations with the three sets of manuscripts. When the article is accepted, illustrations should also be submitted in an electronic format wherever possible. All illustrations should be identified with the author's name and figure number marked in pencil. Do not use 'three dimensional' bar charts produced by computer programmes.
Photographs:
Supply glossy black and white and two photocopies. A scale, where appropriate, should be marked on the photograph or included in the caption. Colour reproduction is available if the author is willing to bear the additional printing costs. Photographs should be unmounted and marked on the back with soft pencil indicating the first four words of the title of the article, the name of the first author and the word 'top'. Patients must not be identifiable from a photograph. If it is essential for a patient's face to be shown, written permission must be obtained from the patient and submitted with the manuscript.

For full instructions on the electronic submission of artwork, please visit the following web address: http://authors.elsevier.com.

References
Indicate references to the literature in the text by superior Arabic numerals that run consecutively through the paper in order of their appearance. Where you cite a reference more than once in the text, use the same number each time. References should take the following form:
1. Amis AA, Dawkins GPC Functional anatomy of the anterior cruciate ligament. J Bone Joint Surg [Br] 1991; 73B: 260-267
2. Insall JN. Surgery of the Knee. New York: Churchill Livingstone, 1984
3. Shumway-Cook A., Woollacott M. Motor Control: Theory and Practical Applications. Baltimore: Williams and Wilkins, 1995.

Please ensure that references are complete, i.e. that they include, where relevant, author's name, article or book title, volume number, publisher, year and page reference and comply with the reference style of Gait and Posture.

Only salient and significant references should be included.

What information to include with the manuscript

1. Having read the criteria for submissions, authors should specify in their letter of transmittal whether they are submitting their work as an Original Article, Review Article, Technical Note, or Book Review. Emphasis will be placed upon originality of concept and execution. Only papers not previously published will be accepted.

2. A letter of transmittal must include the statement, "Each of the authors has read and concurs with the content in the final manuscript. The material within has not been and will not be submitted for publication elsewhere except as an abstract." The letter of transmittal must be signed by all co-authors.

3. Authors are encouraged to suggest referees although the choice is left to the Editors. If you do, please supply their postal address and email address, if known to you.

4. Papers involving human experiments should contain a statement of ethical approval for work undertaken with human subjects.

Review and Publication Process

1. You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of the manuscript by the Editorial Office before the manuscript is sent to referees. Please contact the appropriate Editor-in-Chief if you do not receive an acknowledgement.

Following assessment one of the following will happen:

A: The paper will be accepted directly. In this instance the Editorial Office will keep a single copy and illustrations. Two copies will be returned to the corresponding author who will be requested to send the final completed manuscript plus illustrations and the manuscript cover sheet to the Editor-in-Chief. Authors must also submit a computer disk (3.5" HD/DD disk, Zip-disk or CD-ROM) containing the final version of the manuscript. Please refer to the following web address for full instructions on electronic submission http://authors.elsevier.com. The corresponding author will be notified of acceptance by e-mail or letter. The Editor-in-Chief will send the accepted manuscript and disk to Elsevier for publication.

The disk should be clearly labelled with the title of the paper and authors. The name of the computer and word processing package used should be on the disks and the name of the specific file indicated. The author should keep a copy of the file and illustrations.

B: The paper will be accepted subject to minor amendments. Again, two copies and illustrations will be returned for correction and the Editor-in-Chief will keep one copy. The corrections should be made and the two corrected copies and illustrations sent back to the Editor-in-Chief for checking. Once the paper is accepted the procedure as in 'A' above will be followed.

C: The paper will be rejected but resubmission invited after a major revision. Two copies will be returned along with comments from the Editor-in-Chief or Referees. A complete resubmission of three copies with illustrations is then required as the paper will be re-evaluated by referees and assessment will start again.

D: The paper will be rejected outright as being unsuitable for publication in Gait and Posture. The Editor-in-Chief will keep one copy, whilst the remaining material will be returned to the author.

2. By submitting a manuscript, the authors agree that the copyright for their article is transferred to the publisher if and when the article is accepted for publication. http://www.elsevier.com/homepage/authors/?main=/homepage/about/ita/copyright.shtml.

3. Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for correction, although at this stage any changes should be restricted to typographical errors. Other than these, any substantial alterations may be charged to the authors. Proofs will be sent preferably by e-mail as a PDF file (although they can be sent by overland post) and must be rapidly checked and returned.

4. An order form for reprints will accompany the proofs.

Offprints and Reprints

The principal author will receive 25 offprints of the paper free of charge upon publication. Extra offprint copies (minimum 100) can be ordered prior to publication. Reprints (minimum 100) can be ordered at any time from Elsevier, The Boulevard, Langford Lane, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1GB, UK.

Publication Condition

A manuscript submitted to this journal can only be published if it (or a similar version) has not been published and will not be simultaneously submitted or published elsewhere. A violation of this condition is considered fraud, and will be addressed by appropriate sanctions. Two manuscripts are considered similar if they concern the same hypothesis, question or goal, using the same methods and/or essentially similar data.
