Instructions to Authors

Fisheries Oceanography publishes original papers, reviews and short communications on research relating the production and dynamics of fished populations to the marine environment. Papers on physical, chemical or biological oceanography which describe the environment of fished species and identify factors affecting their recruitment and abundance are welcome. As well as studies of commercially exploited species, related research on other higher trophic levels is included: nekton, benthos, and zooplankton. Papers on operational fisheries oceanography are also suitable.

The journal also publishes book reviews, usually commissioned by the Editor-in-Chief. All book review manuscripts and communications about book reviews should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief.

Many, but not all, review articles are by invitation.

Articles should conform to the following limits on length:

Research papers: 3000-7500 words (6 to 15 journal pages)
Reviews: no more than 6000 words (12 journal pages).
Short Communications: no more than 2000 words (4 journal pages)

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically via the online submission site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/fog. The use of an online submission and peer review site enables immediate distribution of manuscripts and consequentially speeds up the review process. It also allows authors to track the status of their own manuscripts. Complete instructions for submitting a paper are available online and below. Further assistance can be obtained from Stephan Druskat at the Editorial Office. Please email: sdruskat@wiley.com.

Manuscript Files Accepted

Manuscripts and tables should be uploaded as Word (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) files (not write-protected) plus separate figure files. The files will be automatically converted to HTML and PDF on upload and will be used for the review process. The text file must contain the entire manuscript including title page, abstract, text, references, tables, and figure legends, but no embedded figures, e. g. figures in Word (.doc) or PowerPoint (.ppt). Figure tags should be included in the file. Manuscripts should be formatted as described in the Author Guidelines below.

Please address queries concerning the filetypes for submission to sdruskat@wiley.com.

Please note that any manuscripts uploaded as PDF or Word 2007 (.docx) will be automatically rejected. Please save any .docx file as .doc before uploading.

For detailed instructions please see the section Presentation of Manuscripts below.

Figure files

The image quality is a criterion for manuscript evaluation. Manuscripts with inadequate images will be returned to authors.

Only high-resolution TIFF or EPS files are suitable for printing. Please use:
EPS for line art or combination images of photographs and labelling/lines
TIFF at a resolution of 300 dpi at final size for photographic images, and 600 dpi at final size for line art or combination images

If you create your figures using data analysis and graphing software (e.g. Origin), please export the graphs as EPS files. If you require any assistance with creating graphs suitable for printing, please contact the Editorial Office.

For detailed instructions please see the section Presentation of Manuscripts below.

Blinded Review

All manuscripts submitted to Fisheries Oceanography will be reviewed by two experts in the field. Fisheries Oceanography uses single-blinded review. The names of the reviewers will thus not be disclosed to the author submitting a paper.

Suggest a Reviewer

Fisheries Oceanography attempts to keep the review process as short as possible to enable rapid publication of new scientific data. In order to facilitate this process, please suggest the names and current e-mail addresses of two potential international reviewers whom you consider capable of reviewing your manuscript. In addition to your choice, the journal editor may seek the advice of an additional reviewer in the event of a conflict of opinion.

Suspension of Submission Mid-way in the Submission Process

You may suspend a submission at any phase before clicking the 'Submit' button and save it to submit later. The manuscript can then be located under 'Unsubmitted Manuscripts' and you can click on 'Continue Submission' to continue your submission when you choose to.

E-mail Confirmation of Submission

After submission you will receive an e-mail to confirm receipt of your manuscript. If you do not receive the confirmation e-mail after 24 hours, please check your e-mail address carefully in the system. If the e-mail address is correct please contact your IT department. The error may be caused by spam filtering software on your e-mail server. Also, the e-mails should be received if the IT department adds our e-mail server (uranus.scholarone.com) to their whitelist.

Manuscript Status

You can access Manuscript Central any time to check your 'Author Centre' for the status of your manuscript. The Journal will inform you by e-mail once a decision has been made.

Submission of Revised Manuscripts

When resubmitting an article following initial review, it is helpful if you list the points raised by the reviewers and identify how you have addressed each of these (with reference, where appropriate, to the page number(s) in the text). If you disagree with a point raised by a referee, please provide a detailed explanation for this. The Editor will reconsider your manuscript in the light of your comments and modifications and refer the work back to the original referees, or to additional referees, as appropriate. Please resubmit your paper on Manuscript Central.

Revised manuscripts must be uploaded within 2 months of authors being notified of conditional acceptance pending satisfactory revision. Locate your manuscript under 'Manuscripts with Decisions' and click on 'Submit a Revision' to submit your revised manuscript. Please remember to delete any old files uploaded when you upload your revised manuscript. Please also remember to upload your manuscript document separate from your title page.

Copyright

Authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Copyright Transfer Agreement does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here.
Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources. Authors must give signed consent to publication in a letter sent with the paper, but permission to use material elsewhere (e.g. in review articles) will normally be granted upon request.

Fisheries Oceanography now offers OnlineOpen. OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen, the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley InterScience, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive.

For the full list of terms and conditions, see http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/authorresources/onlineopen.html#OnlineOpen_Terms.

Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the payment form available from our website at: https://secure.interscience.wiley.com/funded_access.html.

Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to. All OnlineOpen articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.

Online Early

Fisheries Oceanography is covered by Blackwell Publishing's OnlineEarly service. OnlineEarly articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. OnlineEarly articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of OnlineEarly articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so OnlineEarly articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.

Presentation of Manuscripts

  • All text should be in Times New Roman double-line spaced with 30mm right and left margins.
  • The title, authors' names, addresses, identified corresponding author, contact information (including email) and running title should all be left aligned on a separate first page.
  • The title should be in 14pt bold lower case, authors in 12pt bold capitals and addresses in 12pt italic lower case.
  • Where there is more than one author's address, add a superscript following each author's name and a corresponding numeral preceeding each address.
  • Give key words after the Abstract.
  • Main headings should be in 12pt bold capitals left aligned, each to begin on a new page.
  • Sub-headings should be left aligned in 12pt italic lower case.
  • Do not number sections.
  • The main text should be in 12pt and should be justified.
  • Do not leave a line space between paragraphs. Instead, indent the first line of each new paragraph (except the first paragraph of each new section).
  • Page numbers should be centred at the bottom of the page.
  • All organisms should be identified by taxonomic name (in italics) the first time they are used.
  • Give all abbreviations in full the first time they are used.
  • All formulae should be numbered consecutively in brackets at extreme right of the page.

Abstracts

Each article should include a one-paragraph abstract of not more than 250 words that begins on a separate page and is complete without reference to the text. Key words for indexing should be listed at the end of the abstract.

Language

All papers must be written in English. American or UK spelling can be used, but must be consistent throughout the paper. If a manuscript is otherwise acceptable but the standard of English unsatisfactory, the editorial office will, with the agreement of the author, arrange technical editing of the manuscript by a qualified scientist. In such cases, the journal will make a page charge of $10 per manuscript page. Otherwise no page charges will be levied. All papers will routinely be copy-edited by the publishers.

Units

Use SI units throughout, where possible. For non SI units (e.g. knots, Svedrups) write the unit in full and define the abbreviation used at first mention, e.g. 'at a towing speed of 2 knots (kn, 1 knot = ~ 1 m s-1)'. Generally, use spaces between the quantity and the unit, but not between the unit and any raising power (e.g. 13 kg m-2).

Salinity

Salinity is dimensionless with no units; psu, ppt, or similar should not be used. Salinity should be referred to, for example, as 'the salinity was 36.26 at the surface......spawning took place in water of salinities > 30.0'. Table headings, figure legends etc. should appear just as - Salinity.

Taxonomic Names

Common names of organisms may be used, but all organisms must be identified by proper taxonomic names the first time they are used in the text.

Figures

Figures should be referred to as e.g. Fig. 2, Fig. 2b, c or Figs 9 and 10 - whether in the main body of the text or in brackets, except at the beginning of sentences where it is in full e.g. Figure 9.

All illustrations and lettering should be capable of 66% to 50% reduction without loss of clarity or legibility. Ensure consistency in fonts, line thickness and style. Very thin lines do not reproduce clearly. Avoid using tints, a coarse stipple reproduces more clearly.

Perform a visual check of images by zooming in to 300%. Suitable images will not become noticeably blurred or pixelated.

Ideally line graphics should be saved in TIFF or EPS format at 600dpi, and halftone figures (colour or greyscale) should be saved as 300dpi TIFF files.

Please address queries concerning the filetypes for submission to sdruskat@wiley.com.

In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure.

Figure legends should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. Authors wishing to include colour plates in a paper should contact the Editor-in-Chief.

Colour illustrations

It is the policy of Fisheries Oceanography for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork.

Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF from the internet. If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor at the address below and they will be able to email or FAX a form to you.

Once completed, please return the form to the Production Editor at the address below.

Any article received by Wiley-Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned.

Tables

Tables must be typed double-spaced, without vertical rules, and should not duplicate material in the text or illustrations. All tables should have complete but brief headings, be typed on separate sheets of paper, and be numbered consecutively within the text. Only use horizontal rules to separate the column headers from the main table and at the top and bottom of the table; do not use horizontal rules to separate each line of data. The first letter of text phrases used as column and row headers should be capitalised. The 'Table number' should be in bold but the remainder of the text of the heading is to be in standard weight, e.g. Table 2. Correlation coefficients and significance levels.

References

Only full articles which have been published or are 'in press' may be included in the reference list. Papers 'submitted' or 'in prep.' are not permitted. In the text, unpublished studies should be referred to as such or as a personal communication together with an abbreviated address of the source (e.g. R. Swain, Vancouver University, USA, pers. comm.). References should be inserted in parentheses, as follows: (Cushing, 1989; Young et al., 1986). The reference list should be in alphabetical order according to first-named author. Papers with two authors should follow those of the first-named author, arranged in alphabetical order according to the name of the second author. Articles with more than two authors should follow in chronological order. All authors' names and the title of the article must be included. Any web references must include the date of last access.

Ensure that all references occurring in the text are present in the reference list and that correspondingly there are none that are found solely in the reference list. Standard abbreviations of journal titles should be used, following the American National Standard for Abbreviations of Titles of Periodicals. The following provide examples:

Proofs

Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. Full instructions will be provided when the proofs are ready. Authors are expected to proofread their article promptly and carefully, correcting all printer's errors. Proofs should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Because changes to typeset text are expensive, authors making excessive changes will be invoiced by the publisher.

Offprints

Corresponding authors will receive a PDF offprint of their article via Author Services. Certain terms and conditions which apply to the the use of this offprint will be distributed with the offprint. Additional paper offprints may be ordered online. Please click here and fill in the necessary details, ensuring that you type information in all of the required fields.

If you have queries about offprints please email offprint@cosprinters.com.

Author Services

Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
