About the journal

The goal of Experimental Eye Research is to publish original research papers on all aspects of the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, biophysics, pharmacology, developmental biology, microbiology, and immunology of the eye. The journal is subdivided into four sections; Aqueous Humor and Blood Flow, Cornea and Ocular Surface, Lens and Retina and Choroid, each with their own section editors. Short "Letters to the Editor" on current research, or remarks on recently published papers, are reviewed and published promptly.

Research Areas Include:

*Production and circulation of ocular fluids
* Fine structure, biochemistry, molecular biology, and biophysics of eye tissue
* Neural and muscular mechanisms controlling eye movement
* Neural and general physiology of the visual process

Instructions to Authors

Experimental Eye Research is published monthly and contains the results of original research on ocular tissues. The Journal is subdivided into four Sections: 1) Aqueous Humor and Blood Flow, 2) Cornea and Ocular Surface, 3) Lens, and 4) Retina and Choroid. The responsibility for manuscript review in each Section rests in the hands of Section Editors and the Editorial Board.

The Aqueous Humor and Blood Flow Section includes studies on the cell and molecular biology, structure, function, genetics and development of eye tissues that are involved in or under the influence of aqueous humor inflow and outflow. It also includes studies on the physiology and pharmacology of ocular blood flow.

The Cornea and Ocular Surface Section includes studies on the cell and molecular biology, structure, immunology, physiology, genetics and development of cornea, conjunctiva, tear film, and the lacrimal gland.

The Lens Section includes cell and molecular biology, structure, physiology, and developmental studies dealing with the normal and cataractous lens.

The Retina and Choroid Section includes studies dealing with the cell and molecular biology, structure, function, genetics and development of the retina and pigment epithelium from the tissue through the molecular level of organization. It also includes studies of the choroid and immune responses in these tissues.

For revised submissions, please send a single file containing the entire manuscript in either PDF, Word or PostScript format, in addition to separate text, table and figure files in their original file format. For further information please see section headed 'Manuscripts in Electronic Format'.

To expedite the review of articles authors are asked to supply 5 email addresses of potential reviewers of their article.

Letters to the Editors
Short (not more than four printed pages) communications on current research or remarks on recently published papers may be submitted as Letters to the Editors. Such letters will be reviewed and published promptly.

Warning: The Editors will be alert to any abusive treatment of human subjects or experiments on animals and may refuse manuscripts on such grounds.

Preparation of Manuscripts
Papers should be written in English and, in general, should be divided into the following section: Summary , Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements and References.

The original manuscript and four copies should be submitted. Any manuscript not submitted in acceptable English will be returned immediately without consideration. All pages should be numbered (excluding Tables and Figures)

Summary
Every paper should be preceded by a summary: this should not normally exceed 500 words and should be intelligible to the general reader without reference to the main text. Abbreviations should not be used. References should not be cited in the summary.

Key Words
A list of 5-15 key words should be supplied, for indexing purposes.

Layout
Manuscripts should be typewritten in double spacing throughout (including summary , footnotes, tables and legends) on one side of quarto paper, with wide margins. Footnotes, tables and legends for illustrations should be typed separately at the end of the manuscript.

Running Headline
A short running title of not more than 40 characters (including spaces), suitable for page headings, should be given if the full title is longer than this.

Tables
Each table should be typed on a separate page and should be numbered, using Roman numerals, in the order of mention in the text. A brief title is necessary, and all columns should have a heading. Explanatory information essential to the understanding of the table should be given as footnotes indicated by standard reference marks and typed at the bottom of the page.

Illustrations
Graphics and halftone (photographic) illustrations should be scaled to fit the page format of the journal although the publisher reserves the right to make adjustments if necessary. Non-photographic figures need not be presented as glossy prints, although these are acceptable. Photographic illustrations should be printed on glossy paper and have a final width of either 80 mm (for single column placement) or 168 mm (for double column placement). The length of figures of either of the above widths may not exceed 248 mm, and optimally should be no longer than 204 mm, so that the figure legend can be placed immediately below. The journal will reproduce the figures supplied by the authors as seen, poorly designed illustrations cannot be repaired. Clear illustrations greatly improve the impact and readability of papers. A consistent font style should be used in all figures. Lettering after reduction should be no smaller than 9pt (approx. 2mm) and no larger than 10pt (approx. 4mm). Wide variations in type sizes in lettering is undesirable.

The publisher does not charge for the printing of colour illustrations. If an Author requires proofs other than pdf proofs of colour illustrations then there will be a charge for these proofs.

Each figure and each plate should be numbered, using Arabic numerals, in the order of mention in the text; figures should be clearly identified by number, name(s) of author(s), running title, and, if necessary, the top should be indicated. (The original figures should always be submitted with the manuscript, and duplicate sets, not necessarily of the same quality as the one intended for publication but still clear, must accompany the copies of the manuscript when they are sent.) A legend should be provided for each figure and should include a key to any symbols used in the illustration: all legends should be typed in numerical order as a separate list and appended to the manuscript after the Footnotes.

Conventions
The conventions used in current issues of the journal for headings, references, etc., should be followed in preparing manuscripts. References should be listed alphabetically at the end of the paper and abbreviated according to Index Medicus.

When more than one paper by the same author(s) is cited, the order of listing should be chronological. With two or more authors, the references should be arranged alphabetically and then chronologically within each alphabetical group. titles of papers should be given in full. An example of the style to be used is:

Smith. J., Brown, F and Robinson, S. (1975). Alphacrystallin in the human senile cataract. Exp.Eye Res. 6, 203-12.

Responsibility for the accuracy of references rests solely with the authors. Citations in the text should read thus:

Smith, Brown and Robinson (1957), or (Smith, Brown and Robinson, 1957), and subsequently as Smith et al. (1957). The conventions (Brown, 1957a), (Brown, 1957b) should be used where more than one paper by the same author(s) has appeared in one year. The first and last page number of papers should be cited.

Footnotes
Footnotes should be avoided whenever possible. Essential footnotes should be indicated by superscript figures in the text and collected on a single page placed at the end of the manuscript.

Abbreviations
Customary abbreviations will be used: authors may refer to Chemical Abstracts, to the Biochemical Journal 273, 1 (1991), the Handbook for Chemical Society Authors, the Style Manual for Biological Journals, British Standards Institution recommendations and to Notes on the Preparation of Papers to be Communicated to the Royal Society (1951). Certain non-standard abbreviations of chemical substances are convenient, and those listed without further definition (e.g. DNA, ATP). Any other abbreviations of this kind should be used sparingly, and must be defined in each manuscript where the first such abbreviation occurs.

Copyright/Offprints
Elsevier Science now requires that all manuscripts submitted to its journals be accompanied by a signed copyright transfer agreement. you will find the copyright form in the back of each issue of the journal and on the journal home page. The copyright transfer does not take effect until the manuscript is accepted. In consideration for the assignment of copyright, the Publisher will supply twenty-five offprints of each paper. Further offprints may be ordered at extra cost at the proof stage.

MANUSCRIPTS IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT

When supplying the final version of your paper you may submit it as an email file or on disk prepared on PC-compatible or Apple Macintosh computers.

**Please follow these guidelines carefully**

Include an ASCII version on the disk, together with the word processed version if possible.

Ensure that the files are not saved as read-only.

Manuscripts prepared on disks must be accompanied by four hard copies, including all figures, printed with double spacing, which may be used if setting from the disk proves impracticable.

Ensure the final version of the hard copy and the file on disk are the same. It is the authors' responsibility to ensure complete compatibility. If there are differences the hard copy will be used.

The directives for preparing the paper in the style of the journal as set out in the instructions to Authors must be followed; i.e. ensure the document is in the following order: Title; Authors; Addresses; Short title; Abstract; Key Words; Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgements; References; Tables; Figure Legends; Footnotes.

The operating system and the word processing software used to produce the article should be noted on the disk, as well as all file names. If UNIX, method of extraction should also be noted.

The disk/tape should be labelled with the journal reference number (if known), author name(s), hardware and software used to generate the disk file.

Do not include copyright material, e.g. word processing software or operating system files on the disk as this can create difficulties with Customs clearance.

Package floppy disks in such away as to avoid damage in the post.

Additional points to note:
Use two carriage returns to end headings and paragraphs.

Type text without end of line hyphenation, except for compound words.

Do not use lower case letter "l" (el) for "1" (one) or letter "o" for "0" (zero). (They have different typesetting values.)

Footnotes, tables and figure captions should be keyed and saved in a separate file from the main text for the manuscript. However, please ensure clear hard copies are supplied as they will almost certainly be typeset from the hard copy.

Be consistent with punctuation and only insert a single space between words, numerical values and units, and after punctuation.

Please include a list of any special characters you have used, e.g. Greek, maths.

Illustrations submitted on disk
Authors' illustrations should also, if possible, be supplied as both hard copy and electronic files. Figures drawn using Aldus Freehand (Apple Macintosh) then saved as Encapsulated Postscript files (EPS) are preferred and should be supplied on a separate disk.
