About the journal
Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews made the transition from an annual hardcover series book to a quarterly journal in January 2000. The mission of this American College of Sports Medicine publication is to provide premier quarterly reviews of the most contemporary scientific, medical and research-based topics emerging in the field of sports medicine and exercise science. The publication strives to provide the most relevant, topical information to students, professors, clinicians, scientists and professionals for practical and research applications.

A New ESSR for the New Millennium
Douglas Seals Editor-in-Chief
Under the editorial leadership of John Holloszy, Kent Pandolf, and their predecessors, Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews has become a premier publication in the area of exercise science (kinesiology) and sports medicine. This is the first issue of the new ESSR under my editorship. There are several important changes from the old series that I would like to emphasize in these introductory remarks.
The most obvious change is in format. In contrast to the annual "red book," the new ESSR will be published quarterly in a soft cover. More importantly, the longer, chapter-based historical reviews featured in previous volumes will be replaced by brief reviews addressing new concepts or new ideas related to established but unresolved issues in exercise and sport sciences. The reference lists for each article will be restricted to allow more content of substance to be published in each issue. The rationale for these changes in format is several-fold:
- it will allow more topics to be covered annually;
- it will provide a vehicle to address the most contemporary issues emerging in our field
- from an instructional standpoint, it will provide a more user-friendly source of information for students, professors, and other professionals; and
- the reduced time commitment for article development and evaluation should provide a more attractive mechanism for recruiting high-quality authors and reviewers.
Several other changes also deserve mention. First, we will be emphasizing the use of schematic figures to illustrate important concepts. Second, a consistent effort will be made to promote "integrative" topics based on multidisciplinary thinking and research. Third, we will attempt to recruit more international investigators and junior scientists as authors in an effort to increase the diversity of the ideas presented.
The new ESSR also will feature a greater emphasis on cellular- and molecular-based science and on "translational" research (i.e., applying basic research findings to the human) topics but will maintain the strong traditional focus on integration of concepts. As in all areas of contemporary biology and medicine, an increasing number of investigators performing research related to exercise and sport are employing reductionist models to more effectively identify and study the fundamental mechanisms underlying processes of interest. To remain current, ESSR must incorporate this powerful new knowledge into our portfolio of topics.
In addition to short reviews, the new Journal will feature a News Briefs section in each issue. This section will be developed by Mike Joyner, a physician-scientist with a long-standing interest in integrative physiology as it applies to exercise science, health, and disease.
Finally, to successfully establish the above changes, the new ESSR will employ a new editorial approach. Specifically, as Associate Editor-in-Chief, Roger Enoka, an internationally recognized scholar in neural control of movement, will assist me in providing leadership for the new Journal. There also will be a group of Assistant Editors that will provide guidance, as well as an Editorial Assistant, Cyndi Long, who will provide critical day-to-day administrative support. The content of the new ESSR primarily will be determined by a talented group of Associate Editors. These individuals will carry the workload for the Journal, interacting with the Editors and Assistant Editors to identify potential topics and authors of interest, establishing content and time-line agreements with authors, and ensuring timely peer review and submission of final manuscripts.
As a useful reference and fitting tribute to the "red book" series, we present in the back of this first issue a comprehensive table of contents of past volumes of ESSR. We hope that the new ESSR will continue the tradition of providing state-of-the-art, science-based reviews of topics of interest to members of the American College of Sports Medicine as well as readers throughout the world.
