Instructions to Authors
Types and lengths of manuscripts
The journal publishes original research papers, reviews, rapid communications and case reports within clinical and experimental endocrinology. There are no submission charges. Articles up to six printed pages in length will incur no publication charges. Additional pages will incur a charge of $200 per printed page. Rapid communications must be limited to a maximum of three printed pages and should include no more than one figure, one table and fifteen references.
Correspondence related to published work is published at the discretion of the Editorial Board. Letters should not exceed one printed page, including references, one table or one figure. Authors of the work being discussed will ordinarily be allowed to reply.
Submission of manuscripts
Manuscripts should be submitted to Professor Paolo Beck-Peccoz, The Chief Editor, European Journal of Endocrinology, c/o SPI CP 1362, CH-6830 Chiasso-1, Switzerland. For express courier delivery only please use the following address: Professor Paolo Beck-Peccoz, The Chief Editor, European Journal of Endocrinology, c/o Ospedale Maggiore IRCCS, Padiglione Granelli, Piano Terra, Istituto di Scienza Endocrine, Via Francesco Sforza, 35, I-20122 Milan, Italy.
One original and three copies of the complete manuscript should be supplied.
The covering letter must include the following statement signed by all authors:
"The author(s) hereby confirms that neither the manuscript nor any part of it, except for abstracts of less than 400 words, has been published or is being considered for publication elsewhere. By signing this letter each of us acknowledges that he or she participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for its content."
This letter should also include: (a) information on duplicate publication or submission elsewhere of any part of the work, (b) a statement of financial or other relationships which might lead to a conflict of interest, (c) permission to reproduce illustrations that may identify human subjects, (d) the name, address, telephone number, fax number and email address of the corresponding author. In the event that an author is added or removed from the list of authors, written acceptance signed by all authors should be submitted to the editorial office.
Authors may suggest at least three scientists as reviewers, and may also identify persons whom they would prefer not to be consulted, stating their reasons.
To expedite refereeing, authors should supply copies of any references cited as ‘In Press?
Authors should ensure that they hold all relevant permissions to cite the unpublished observations of other workers (the names and initials of all these workers should be cited in the text, and permission obtained from them all), and also for the reproduction or adaptation of any figures or tables that have been published previously (permission should be obtained from the original publisher and author(s)).
Equal consideration is given to all manuscripts in English from any country. Statements in articles are the responsibility of the authors.
Authors should keep copies of everything submitted.
Computer disks
A disk is desirable at the time of submission and mandatory for the final version of the manuscript, once it has been accepted for publication. The disk should carry the text, references, figure legends and tables of the paper. All figures should be supplied separately, as should copies of all tabular material.
Files from most word-processing packages can be processed, though RTF files are preferred. Authors should state which package and computer system (usually PC or Macintosh) have been used.
Printed copies of all disk files should be supplied.
It is the author's responsibility to ensure that the final accepted version of the manuscript matches the version on disk, and that the proofs accurately contain any special characters that may be altered in file conversion.
Preparation of manuscripts
Manuscripts should be printed with a line spacing of 2 (double-spaced) in a serif font (e.g. Times), with a size of at least 10 point. The left margin should be 5 cm wide.
Title page. This should carry the title of the article, the names and addresses of all authors (the institution to which the work is to be attributed should be listed first), the name, address, fax number and email address of the corresponding author, and a short running title for page headings.
Abstract. This should be divided using the headings Objective (giving the context of the study), Design, Methods, Results and Conclusions. It should be easily understood, without the need to refer to the main text, and should have a maximum length of 250 words. All abbreviations should be defined.
Text. For original research papers, this should generally comprise the Introduction, Materials and methods or Subjects and methods, Results, Discussion and any Acknowledgements. The arrangement of material for other types of article is at the discretion of the authors, but this should in general conform with the requirements for original research papers. All abbreviations should be defined at the point of first occurrence.
References. References should be cited in numerical order in the text, and listed in this order at the end of the paper. If there are more than six authors, please list the first six followed by et al. The standard format for references is shown in the following examples.
- Inkster S, Yue W & Brodie A. Human testicular aromatase: immunocytochemical and biochemical studies. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism 1995 80 1941-1947.
- Matthews CH, Borgato S, Beck-Peccoz P, Adams M, Tone Y, Gambino G et al. Primary amenorrhea and infertility due to a mutation in the b-subunit of follicle-stimulating hormone. Nature Genetics 1993 5 83-86.
- Royer P. Hormonal regulation of calcium metabolism: biology and pathology. In Pediatric Endocrinology, edn 2, ch. 6, pp 477-543. Eds J-C Job & M Pierson. New York: John Wiley & Sons, 1981.
Please note that papers with incorrectly formatted references will be returned and the acceptance date changed to the date of receipt of the correctly formatted paper.
Figures. Figures should be supplied separately from their legends, and each figure should be clearly numbered and on a separate page. Good quality laser-printed output is ideal for line drawings, and this should not be photographed to give a glossy print. Avoid the use of shading and stripes as these are difficult to reproduce. Original photographs are essential for all half-tone images and colour work. Authors should plan figures so that they remain clear when reduced to fit within a single column in the journal (82 mm wide). Please mark the reverse of all copies of any figure that needs to be wider than this for clear presentation. Authors will be asked to pay the costs of any colour reproduction. EPS and TIF files can be accepted provided they are accompanied by good quality paper copies.
Figure legends should enable the figure to be understood in isolation from the main text. Unusual abbreviations should be defined. It should be stated whether values presented are means±S.E.M., means±S.D., etc. Where statistical analyses have been performed, probabilities for comparisons should be clearly stated and the tests used should be named. Magnifications should be indicated by means of scale bars, wherever possible.
Tables. Each table should be provided on a separate sheet and should have a line-spacing of 2 (i.e. double-spacing). It should be possible to understand each table in isolation from the main text. In general, instructions for the preparation of figure legends apply.
Ethics
When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical methods of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional or regional) or with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 2000 (www.wma.net/e/policy/17c.pdf). Do not use patients' names, initials or hospital numbers, especially in any illustrative material.
When reporting experiments on animals, please follow the guidelines that can be found at: www.frame.org.uk/Guidelines.htm.
Copyright
A copyright transfer form will need to be completed before the paper can be published.
Requests to reproduce material, such as tables and figures, which has been published in the European Journal of Endocrinology should be addressed to the Chief Editor.
Offprints
Offprints can be ordered on the offprint order form which will accompany the proofs.
Supplements
Peer-reviewed proceedings and reviews may be accepted for publication as a supplement to the European Journal of Endocrinology.
The organizer(s) or authors(s) of the meeting will be responsible for the full costs of the supplement. For further information, please contact the Chief Editor.
