About the journal

Environmental Modelling & Software publishes research articles, review papers and short communications on recent advances in environmental modelling and software. It seeks presentation of generic techniques and issues which apply across or integrate a range of disciplines, as well as model applications in specific sectors of the environment, as detailed in the list below. The aim is to improve our capacity to represent, understand or predict the behaviour of environmental systems at all practical scales, and to communicate those improvements effectively to a wide scientific and professional audience. Papers that focus on the evaluation and application of environmental software are especially welcome.

The journal particularly encourages submission of papers with additional supplementary material available in electronic form. This material may be, for example, demonstrations of software, simulations of environmental models, animations, graphical images, etc.

Authors are invited to submit relevant papers in the following areas:
Generic techniques and issues (including system identification, model conception, model evaluation and visualisation, scale and regionalisation issues)
Environmental dynamics: meteorology, micrometeorology, hydrology, geophysics
Pollution: air, water, soil, noise, radiation, multi-media
Environmental accidents, prevention and emergency response
Environmental health, chemistry and toxicology
Global change including climate and land cover
Environmental engineering and technology
Remote sensing, satellite data and image processing
Geographic information systems
Mathematical, numerical and statistical modelling
Water resources (including groundwater and water quality management)
Biological resources (including wildlife and agricultural systems management)
Socioeconomic-environment interactions

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers

Authors are requested to submit their original manuscript and figures with three copies to Dr A.J. Jakeman. Electronic submission is also acceptable.

Dr A. J. Jakeman, Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies, Building 48A, Linnaeus Way, The Australian National University, Canberra, ACT 0200, Australia; Tel: +61 2 6125 4742; Fax: +61 2 6125 0757; E-mail: tony.jakeman@anu.edu.au

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

To submit a paper for ShortComs authors are advised to go to http:www.iemss.org/shortcom. A paper submission form and instructions to guide authors through the process is hosted at this site. Authors should upload the paper as a PDF or Word file and provide the names of up to 5 potential reviewers as well as 5-10 keywords.

Review process: All manuscripts are sent to at least two independent reviewers to ensure both accuracy and relevance to the journal. The final decision on acceptance will be made by the appropriate Editor. Manuscripts may therefore be sent back to authors for revision if necessary. Revised manuscript submissions should be made as soon as possible after the receipt of the reviewer's report. Revised manuscripts returned after four months will be considered as new submissions and will be subject to the full review process.

Types of Contributions

Research articles, review papers, short communications (view points), software product reviews and book reviews. The "Short Communications Section" will invite papers that are no longer than 3000 words (7-8 double spaced pages). These papers are to be submitted entirely over the web and our intent is to keep the review process within a 1 month time period.

Manuscript Preparation

General: Manuscripts should be written in English and must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Abstracts: All manuscripts should be accompanied by an abstract of not more than 200 words describing the entire paper; a keyword list (5-10 keywords) and, where appropriate, a software availability section containing as much of the following information as possible: name of software, developer and contact address, telephone, fax and e-mail numbers, year first available, hardware required, software required, program language, program size, availability and cost.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Vitae, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.

Units: The SI system should be used for all scientific and laboratory data; if in certain instances it is necessary to use other units these should be added in parentheses. Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. Where abbreviations are likely to cause ambiguity or not be readily understood by an international readership, units should be given in full.

Formulae: Formulae should be numbered consecutively in the right hand side of the column where they appear for the first time. Special symbols (e.g. Greek) should be identified in the margin. Care should be taken to avoid confusion between letters and numerals.

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in the agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)"). For three or more authors use the first author followed by "et al.", in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list.
References should be given in the following form:

Jolly, I.D., Narayan, K.A., Armstrong, D., Walker, G.R., 1998. The impact of flooding on modelling salt transport processes to streams. Environmental Modelling & Software 13 (1) 87-104.

Lakhan, V.C., 1989. Computer simulation of shoreward propagating deep and shallow waves. In: Lakham, V.C., Trenhaile, A.S., (Eds.), Applications in Coastal Modelling. Elsevier: Amsterdam.

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: Colour figures may also be produced in the journal, for all but exceptional cases the author will be asked to bear the costs of colour plate separations.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Electronic Submission

Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from Author Gateway.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments made may be charged to the author. There may be a list of comments/queries included on a "Queries to Authors" sheet which you should answer as fully as possible on the proof. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon EX1 2AH, UK.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright

All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations. It also includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.
