About the journal

Environment International covers all disciplines engaged in the field of environmental research. It seeks to quantify the impact of contaminants in the human environment, and to address human impacts on the natural environment itself. We recognize that scientific issues related to environmental health and human welfare are inherently interdisciplinary and, therefore, we welcome articles that cover the entire spectrum of sources, pathways, sinks and interactions between environmental pollutants, whether chemical, biological or physical. The primary criteria for publication are scientific quality and environmental significance.

Progress in Environmental Science now forms the reviews section of Environment International, presenting state-of-the-science reviews of major themes within the field of environmental science, such as those related to environmental risks and hazards, environmental pollution, waste disposal and the modelling of environmental impacts.

Instructions to Authors

Types of Contribution
No single format can accommodate all useful contributions to this journal.
Five formats are offered, two of which (Reviews and New Developments), fall within the Progress in Environmental Science reviews section:
1. Editorial articles are published by the Editor-in-Chief or other Editors, members of the Editorial Board or invited Guest Editors. These focus attention on contemporary important environmental issues in relation to environmental health and are designed to stimulate debate and discussion.
2. Research Articles are up-to-date, original papers that present developments in any scientific field pertinent to environmental contamination and environmental health. Informative abstracts are required and articles must be fully referenced. Criteria for publication are weighted toward scientific quality and environmental significance. The manuscript will be evaluated on the basis of its conciseness, clarity, and presentation. The work will be assessed according to its originality, scientific merit, and experimental design. Poorly written manuscripts will be returned to the authors with a request to improve the quality of the paper prior to peer review.
3. Correspondence is encouraged. Opinions, perspectives and insight on articles published in Environment International are very welcome.
4. Reviews represent articles that trace recent developments and discuss trends in a particular field of research. They may be of a broad nature, providing accounts of specific fields of interest in any relevant area. Authors are encouraged to write in a clear and simple manner so that the article is understandable to readers from a broad cross section of disciplines. On average, a text length (excluding references) of c.8000 words is required. Prospective authors should contact the Editor in Chief in the first instance to discuss the suitability of proposed topics. Articles should not be case studies, not reporting of personal research.
5. New Developments are short articles presenting the latest developments in scientific, technological and policy developments relating to environmental contamination and environmental health. On average, a text length (excluding references) of c.3000 words is required. Abstracts are not included in these short articles. Readers are encouraged to suggest subjects for inclusion in this section.

Since the journal will serve a multidisciplinary audience, authors are urged to write for nonspecialists. In particular, they are discouraged from using expressions that are comprehensible only to a select audience. Clarity should be the guide when preparing manuscripts. All the contributions will be subjected to peer review.

Special issues
Proposals for special themed issues, or special issues arising from conferences, should be discussed with the Editor-in-Chief Dr Ruth Alcock (ruth.alcock@virgin.net). Guest Editors will coordinate the review and submission process of special issue papers and will prepare an introduction. Special prices for bulk orders of a special issue can be arranged.

Submission of manuscripts
Please email a brief abstract/synopsis of your paper to the Editor-in-Chief before submission of your complete paper. Authors considering submitting a Review or New Developments paper should contact the Editor-in-Chief to discuss their proposed topics. All manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate in English with the names and full contact details of at least three suitable reviewers to the following address: Ruth Alcock, Editorial Office, Environment International, Environmental Research Solutions, Ghyll Cottage, Mill Side, Witherslack, Nr Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, LA11 6SG, UK. Email:ruth.alcock@virgin.net
Manuscripts are received with the understanding that their content is unpublished material, that it is not being submitted for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. Submission of a multi-authored manuscript implies the consent of all participating authors.

Preparation of manuscripts
Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced on one side of Bond paper with wide margins. Tables, lists of figure legends, and lists of references should be typed on separate sheets. Arabic numbers should be used in numbering tables and figures, and their placement should be indicated in the text.
Figures should be provided in camera-ready form and should be large enough to be legible after the diagram has been reduced in size for printing. In the interest of conserving space, it is desirable that figures are drawn so that they will reduce to the single column width of 8.5 cm. Write article title and figure number lightly in pencil on the back of each piece of artwork. Each paper should include a title page with the title of the paper, name(s) of author(s), complete affiliation(s), mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the author to whom proofs and correspondence should be sent.

Disks: The manuscript should also be submitted in Electronic version. Please use 3.5" HD/DD disks. Please observe the following criteria: 1) Specify what word processing software was used, including which release (eg. WordPerfect 6.1). The WordPerfect word processing system prepared with an IBM-compatible (MS-DOS or PC-DOS) computer is the preferred submission. 2) Specify type of computer used (eg. IBM Compatible). 3) Include both the text file and an ASCII version on the disk. 4) The file should be double-spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-line feature. Place two returns after each element such as title, headings, paragraphs, etc.
References: The journal generally follows the referencing style of the Council of Biological Editors. In the text, refer to the author(s) and the year.
Examples for one author, two authors and more than two authors are: Gambrell (1994); Dockery and Pope (1994); Gunter et al. (1996). If there is more than one listing of the same author and year, use a, b, c, etc. Prepare a list in alphabetical order containing all literature cited. In this list of references, include initials and surnames of the authors, title of the paper, name of the journal using the World List of Scientific Periodicals abbreviations, volume number and page number(s).
Note that et al. is not acceptable in the reference list unless the publication has more than six authors. The following examples should be used as a guide:
Article: Vazquez, G.F.; Enisco, G.; Morales J.W. Metal ions in water and sediments of the Pom-Atasta lagoon, Mexico. Environ Int. 25:599-604; 1999

Proceedings: Krewitt, W.; Trukenmueller, A.; Mayerhofer, P.; Freidrich, R. ECOSENSE- An integrated tool for environmental impact analysis. In: Kremers, H.; Pillmann, W., eds. Space and time in environmental information systems. Umwelt- Informatik aktuell, Band 7. Marburg: Metropolis- Verlag; 1995.

Tracking manuscripts
Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.

Offprints:Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge to the first named author. Additional reprints can be ordered on a reprint order form which will accompany proofs. Unless instructions to the contrary have been received, only the first named author will receive this order form with proofs of the article.

Copyright:The Copyright Transfer Form which accompanies the proofs must be signed before the article can be published (U.S. and U.K. government officers or employees whose submitted work was prepared as part of their employment are exempt from the transfer requirement, but must certify their status as government writers). The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform, or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.
